Holy Horror Mansion

After a long-standing franchise that premiered in 2013, Level-5 has introduced a new cross-media title, Holy Horror Mansion. The game, designed as a ghost-craft RPG, follows Yo-Kai’s concept, and it is still unclear whether it will end the revered Yo-Kai franchise. For those yearning to know what’s in Level-5’s next chapter, here’s everything we know about Holy Horror Mansion so far.

What is Holy Horror Mansion?

The Ghost camera

Holy Horror Mansion is an upcoming horror video game from the Japanese video game developers and publishers Level-5. They are the creators of the highly acclaimed Japanese video game and anime series Yo-Kai Watch, which dates back to 2013, when the original title was released. Level-5 announced their upcoming game on September 24, 2024, presenting fans with a new horror story based on a mysterious family. According to the Level-5 president and CEO, Holy Horror Mansion is Level-5’s largest cross-media project after Yo-Kai Watch. However, its announcement doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility of another installment in the Yo-Kai Watch franchise.

Story

Holy Horror Mansion

During the game announcement, Akihiro Hino, the Level-5 CEO, revealed that Holy Horror Mansion is a family-themed-title. From the game’s storyline to the design, Level-5 aims to create an experience that an entire family can enjoy together. While it’s still unclear what exactly Hino meant with this, Holy Horror Mansion’s story clearly follows a young boy named Ten Lordland.

You will follow the story of Ten Lordland, the hero who lives at the top of an apartment. His mansion is at the topmost of the multi-storey apartment building, apparently owned by his grandmother. His granny is the landlord, which aligns the events with Hino’s sentiments of a family-themed storyline. Ten Lordland’s family lives within this building in a rather problem-free life. However, their mansion is not just their humble abode. It’s a gateway to the underworld.

While in his usual life in the mansion, Ten Lordland finds a bizarre camera locked up in one of the rooms. He’s a playful boy who picks it up and plays with the camera for a while. Suddenly, one of his nose hairs begins to grow crazily. Ten Lordland pulls the hair out, only for it to come out with a mysterious green thing. A weird, quirky ghost that begins to hover around following Ten Lordland. But as the ghost continues to follow him, he begins to understand it. Anything the green ghost enters begins to move like it’s alive.

A lot of other things come up around it, some of which are annoying. But for Ten Lordland, watching everything is a great pastime. And the ghost has a friend too, a blue ghost that joins things together to form chimeras. It could turn into any weird shape, making it quite interesting. More friends also appear as Ten Lordland carries on in amusement and enjoyment as he explores the newfound mysteries.

Gameplay

Meet the people of the newfound town and like any other city, discover the good and the evil. It’s here you meet the De Ville Corp, an evil organization that will do anything for some extra chunks. The company becomes your main antagonist. But with the powers of your ghosts, there is nothing to fear.

Fight against the Darkarymen along with their mysterious items, including the scale that will have you lose weight when you step on it to weigh. Follow the hijinks and adrenaline rush stories of the city and explore the mysteries to the extreme of the realms of the wonders.

Development

Holy Horror Mansion

Only a little has been revealed about the anticipated horror game’s development. However, it is clear that the concept is similar to that of Yo-Kai Watch. The game is designed as a ghost-craft RPG and is Level-5’s biggest cross-media work after Yo-Kai. During the Vision 2024: To the World’s Children event, the company’s president revealed they partnered with top entertainment companies in development.

For the gameplay, only the trailer gives fans a glimpse of how the game looks. That makes it a little challenging to know about Holy Horror Mansion’s development stage at the time of announcement. However, given the sentiments of the company’s president, Holy Horror Mansion could still be in the early stages of development. The team promised a cross-media showcase for the title sometime in Spring 2025. They intend to reveal their media plans and game-related merchandise during this time and have asked fans to stay alert for updates.
