Hard Rock Casino Tejon in California Set for November Launch
The long anticipated Hard Rock Casino Tejon will open its doors on November 13, and it is going to bring top quality gaming experiences to Kern County, California. A 1 hour drive North of LA, Hard Rock Casino Tejon is set to be the 18th Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in the US, launching ahead of the Hard Rock Las Vegas (2027) and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Kenosha, in Wisconsin (2026).
The $600 million partnership between the Tejon Indian Tribe and Hard Rock International represents a strong addition to the US landbased gaming sector. California is one of the most important players in that market, and having recently banned sweepstakes casinos, and being nowhere close to legalizing mobile casino gaming or sports betting, brick and mortar gaming continues to thrive in the Golden State.
What to Expect from Hard Rock Casino Tejon
This will not be another motorway hotel with an added gaming venue. Hard Rock International has splashed out over $600 million on Hard Rock Casino Tejon, and it will include a casino gaming floor that rivals the biggest establishments in Vegas. On its site, the project states there will be over 150,000 square feet dedicated to gambling, with more than 2,000 slot machines and 50+ table games. While the table game count is less than impressive, the number of slots and square feet easily rivals that of the biggest Las Vegas casinos.
It is also expected to feature the Hard Rock signature music memorabilia, a 400 room hotel, a concert venue, and several casino resort-style amenities. Although those will come with Part 2, and probably be finished in 2027. It will be Hard Rock’s second casino in California. The Hard Rock Casino Sacramento is about 30 minutes by car North of Sacramento, and is slightly smaller than the planned Tejon venue. It also has around 50 table games, 1,400 slots and a hotel. The casino also features unique bingo rooms, exclusive VIP experiences, high limit rooms and even personal hosts for treasured guests.
Tejon, which looks to be a more ambitious project, will also deliver VIP experiences, sky high jackpots, and a variety of video poker. After launching and learning more about the local tastes, Hard Rock Casino Tejon will probably also launch a few more niche gaming offerings to attract players and compete with other nearby gaming venues in California.
Leading Casinos and Integrated Resorts in California
Competition is high, especially given the size of California, and the fact that mobile gaming is practically nonexistent and sports betting has not been legalized. The brick and mortar gaming sector is booming, and Cali is home to some of the most profitable and largest landbased casinos in the country.
Yaamava’ Resort and Casino (San Manuel), is run by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, and features over 7,000 slot machines and 150 gaming tables. Those numbers don’t just beat many of the Vegas casinos; they are figures that could compete with the biggest casinos in Macau, China. Five high limit rooms, VIP private gaming rooms, luxury hotel suites and a plethora of dining and entertainment facilities, Yaamava’ is right up there with the best landbased casinos in the US.
But that is not all. You also have Pechanga Resort and Casino, run by the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, with over 5,000 slots and 150 gaming tables. The Morongo Casino Resort and Spa, run by the Morongo Tribe, has 4,000 slots and 80 gaming tables.
Hard Rock International’s Casino in Tejon is nowhere near the size of Cali’s biggest and best landbased casinos, but it is the only one in Kern County and that area. The others are mostly located around LA, such as in Palm Springs, or down near San Diego (and the Mexican border), or way up North around Sacramento and Santa Rosa.
Prominent Californian Tribes
California’s casinos are all run by tribes or in partnerships with local California Native tribes. It has over 60 tribes, which are not regulated by the state but are independently governed by the National Indian Gaming Commission. This sovereign body was created in 1988, following the establishment of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. This gave native tribes the right to operate landbased casinos on their land, the native Indian reservations, and they are independent from the state gambling laws.
Key tribes in California include the following:
- San Manuel Band of Mission Indians: Operators of Yaamava’ Resort & Casino, one of the largest and most profitable tribal casinos in the US
- Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians: One of the earliest adopters of full scale resort gaming in California, known for setting standards in tribal luxury resorts
- Morongo Band of Mission Indians: Pioneers in expanding California’s tribal-state compacts to allow Vegas-style slot machines and table games
- Tejon Indian Tribe: Among the newer entrants to the gaming sector, partnering with Hard Rock International to establish their first major casino presence
- Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation: A long-standing tribal operator in Southern California, known for strong community engagement and modern expansion projects
- United Auburn Indian Community: The tribal nation behind Thunder Valley Casino Resort, one of Northern California’s most successful gaming properties
The casinos and resorts are thus either run completely independently by these tribes or they partner with major entertainment conglomerates, like Hard Rock International or Harrah’s/Caesars (Buena Vista Rancheria of Me-Wuk Indians in Harrah’s Resort Northern California and the Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians in Harrah’s Resort Southern California).
What Games Are Allowed in California
These casinos, under tribal-state compacts, are permitted to offer Class III casino games, including the likes of slot machines, video poker, card based games like blackjack or poker variants, roulette games, and some types of dice games. Non tribal card rooms are not allowed to offer the same types of games. They are limited to player-banked card games, including blackjack variants, pai gow and some poker titles. This basically gives tribal casinos a virtual monopoly on casino gaming in the state.
California takes a pretty harsh stance against real money casino games, and it is very far from even considering legalizing sports betting. Recently, California passed Assembly Bill 831 that effectively banned sweepstakes casinos, social casinos and promotional gaming sites that operated in the legal gray area. The “freemium casino” experiences, where you can win real money, were purged from California. And with it, several big operators working in this gray area left the state.
It even caused world famous games vendor Pragmatic Play to leave the US entirely. Their, and other gray market operators’, only way back in is through the official channels, sourcing iGaming licenses and gaining the necessary permissions.

Hard Rock’s Tejon Casino and Future Projects
Hard Rock Hotel is very busy in the US at the moment, with planned resorts for the Las Vegas Strip and Wisconsin on the horizon. The company had a resort on the Las Vegas Strip from 1995 that lasted until 2020, when it was sold and rebranded to Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. The new Hard Rock Las Vegas was planned back in 2021, and Hard Rock acquired the world famous Mirage Casino in Las Vegas. The Mirage was the first casino resort built on the Las Vegas Strip back in 1989, and it was closed in 2024. The reopening under the Hard Rock International ownership is expected for late 2027.
The Wisconsin project, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Kenosha, is a $400 million entertainment center. Kenosha, which is about an hour from Milwaukee in the North and Chicago, IL, in the South, looks across Lake Michigan and will no doubt be a welcome addition to Wisconsin’s diverse landbased casino scene. Hard Rock International is also running in the race for a downstate New York casino license. Hard Rock’s project, the Metropolitan Park, which is made in partnership with Mets owner Steve Cohen and SHoP Architects, is an $8 billion gaming destination that could bring Hard Rock Casino massive visibility and unlock a potentially hot market for the company. We will find out whether or not the Hard Rock NYC project is approved by the 8 December deadline.
Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Athens
Looking abroad, Hard Rock is looking to add to its portfolio with the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Athens, in the capital of Greece. The company is building resorts and hotels all over the world, but with its ever-growing portfolio of casinos, Hard Rock International is slowly taking on rivals like MGM, Caesars, Genting and Wynn. This pushes up the competition, creates more diversity, and brings back more interest to landbased venues in a world that is constantly shifting more towards online iGaming experiences.
