Grand Theft Auto 6: Everything We Know (2025)

At this point, it’s easy to throw your arms up in the air and wait for other games that have a solid launch date. But it’s a fact that the next mainline entry in the revered GTA franchise is still on track. In fact, we’re finally in the year that the game’s publisher promises the game will be coming out. So, if you’re one of the folks who have been waiting patiently since 2014, don’t worry. The long wait will soon be over. Shall we see everything we know about Grand Theft Auto 6 so far? Let’s get going.

What is Grand Theft Auto 6?

Grand Theft Auto 6: Everything We Know (2025)

Grand Theft Auto 6 is an upcoming action-adventure game in the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series. It’ll be the eighth mainline entry after Grand Theft Auto V and the 16th entry overall. The game will return to Vice City, in the fictional open-world state of Leonida.

It follows the first female protagonist since 2000, Lucia, and her male partner, Jason–Bonnie and Clyde style. GTA 6 may very well be the most hotly anticipated upcoming game in 2025.

That’s because GTA V, the last game in the franchise, launched over a decade ago. Well, that and fans of the franchise have endured years of rumors, speculation, and a major September 2022 leak described as one of the biggest leaks in the history of gaming.

Story

For now, the setting of GTA 6 is clear. It’ll take us to the State of Leonida, where the streets of Vice City bloom. Apparently, the upcoming open world will be the biggest and most immersive in the GTA series yet. It’s interesting, as Vice City is no stranger to the franchise.

The city also appeared in Grand Theft Auto (1997), GTA: Vice City (2002), and GTA: Vice City Stories (2006). Other than that, the trailer reveals that we will be following Lucia, an inmate who escapes prison to join his male partner, Jason, in the outside world.

They then orchestrate heists all around Vice City while attempting to escape the police. Apparently, the story draws heavy inspiration from Bonnie and Clyde, though hopefully doesn’t end in a tragic way.

Gameplay

Grand Theft Auto 6

GTA 6 will quite likely follow the same action-adventure open-world crime gameplay style as its predecessors. The trailer is useful in revealing some of the activities you’ll engage in, including robbing a store, driving around Vice City, and generally completing life-simulated activities in an open world.

The first and only trailer for the upcoming game is solely based on the story. So, it’s difficult for us to pinpoint the exact gameplay features GTA 6 will incorporate. Still, we expect many new mechanics and features that will elevate the GTA V gameplay experience.

You'll perhaps veer toward stealth showcased in the leaks, use wheels as weapons, access more health buffs like taking painkillers, and enjoy the return of the Wanted system, including revamps of the AI tracking features. There may also be social media integration that may include a social mechanic.

Development

While gamers already started to anticipate GTA 6 as early as 2014, just after GTA V came out in 2013, Rockstar Games, the developing studio, only confirmed the game was in development in February 2022. Thereafter, footage of the game’s unfinished gameplay was leaked in September 2022.

It caused a massive stir and excitement in the Internet and gaming industry. Since then, fans have been waiting in angst for the launch of the game, which Rockstar only officially revealed in December 2023 via a trailer video and announced that it was scheduled for a late 2025 release.

Some fans have already been frustrated by the long wait for Grand Theft Auto 6. These sentiments may have been eased by the September 2024 hack that revealed 90 videos of unfinished GTA 6 gameplay. Among the details that were leaked were the setting, level designs, character dialogues, and the stars of the show, Lucia and Jason, robbing several establishments.

Yet anticipation for the upcoming title is still at its peak. The game won the Most Wanted Game at the Golden Joystick Awards and the Most Anticipated Game at the Game Awards in 2024. These only attest to how desperately fans want Grand Theft Auto 6 to be launched already.

Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 1

Here’s the official trailer video for GTA 6 that was revealed in December 2023 by Rockstar Games. It introduces us to Lucia, the female protagonist, as a prison inmate before she escapes into the open world of Vice City and its varied environs.

Lucia and her male partner engage in a police car chase and orchestrate heists swearing to stick together and trust each other, before the video wraps up with a “Coming 2025” banner. Be sure to check out the video for more details on some of the characters you’ll be interacting with and the myriad ways you’ll be getting your hands dirty in Vice.

Also, be sure to keep an eye out for the gameplay trailer. It should reveal more accurate information and should be coming out sometime before the final launch.

You can expect GTA 6 to arrive in 2025. Yes, this is a final confirmation by Take-Two Interactive, the game’s publisher, saying that the title is right on schedule. Furthermore, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, narrowed the launch date to Fall 2025, saying, “We do feel highly confident that we’ll deliver in fall 2025.”

So, now, you only need to dust off your PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S; the platforms on Grand Theft Auto 6 are expected to be available. While the official website doesn’t reveal the editions that may be available for preorder, we believe they will announce them soon, possibly a standard, deluxe, and collector’s edition.
