Enter the Gungeon 2: Everything We Know

Most video game developers love to keep fans hooked by consistently releasing new titles in their franchises. However, Dodge Roll has taken a more measured approach with their beloved dungeon crawler, Enter the Gungeon. Despite being created by a small indie team, the game became an instant hit, selling millions of copies within its first few years. Fans praised its creative gameplay, quirky humor, and especially its inventive gun designs.
Now, nearly a decade on, the same developers have announced the sequel, dubbed Enter the Gungeon 2. It takes directly from the original game, but the team has gone a notch higher still on the game design. Though not much has been revealed so far, here is everything we know about Enter the Gungeon 2.
What is Enter the Gungeon 2?
Enter the realm of a bullet-hell roguelike games experience reminiscent of the 2016 video game Enter the Gungeon. As its name suggests, Enter the Gungeon 2 is the sequel to the Dodge Roll title that was only comparable to other bullet hell games like Nuclear Throne. It will be the first sequel to follow up on the original entry, coming nearly a decade later. Even so, the game’s release could stretch beyond, given that a release date is yet to be slated. It is still expected to be a bullet hell dungeon crawler, borrowing most of its tenets from the prequel. However, fans can expect major improvements in the pixel art, character design, weapons, and overall gameplay.
Story
Just like with the original dungeon crawler game, Enter the Gungeon 2 doesn’t seem to hold a concrete storyline. Players simply find themselves in the Gungeon and under attack and begin the fight in a permadeath system. The player characters, the Gungeoneers, fight against the bullet-like enemies in a fast-paced action, using both exotic and conventional weapons. The main mission in the original game was to find the gun that could kill the past.
In Enter the Gungeon, players control the Gungeoneers, unlikely heroes seeking redemption who battle through procedurally generated floors, each packed with dozens of chaotic rooms and the relentless Gundead, a pun-fueled army of sentient bullets. This formula of fast-paced, bullet-hell combat and roguelike exploration made the original a cult favourite.
In Gungeon 2, the action returns with even more intensity. Players will once again face off against the Gundead in a mix of familiar and entirely new Gungeons, each redesigned with fresh challenges and secrets. The core gameplay remains intact, but with added depth, new weaponry, and upgraded mechanics. Beyond the chaos, there’s a looming question—why have the Gungeoneers returned, and what sinister force has pulled them back into the Gungeon’s depths? As they delve deeper, players will uncover mysterious new lore and face even more absurd and explosive foes in their quest for answers.
Gameplay
The game relives the Enter the Gungeon gameplay in a reloaded and high-calibre experience. Enjoy the mess of your screen crowded with bullets and tough bosses. The game is reinforced with fresh 3D pixel art styling with expanded gameplay featuring new enemies and weapons. It’s still unclear whether you will have all the previous characters from Convict, Pilot, Marine, and Hunter. However, you can be sure there’s an expanding list of Gungeoneers to choose from. The ballooning roster of Gungeoneers will feature both old and new faces, so we can only wait and see who returns.
Battle through the dungeon crawler, passing through familiar and new regions. Brave through the ruins to uncover its secrets and save the marooned heroes from the depths of the Gungeon. It’s up to you to locate and unlock new weaponry and master how to use them through the procedurally generated rooms. Unleash your might using unforeseeable combos of explosive items, powerful passive items, and curses. Couple this up with your impressive mastery of weapons and destroy the Gundead legions dropping from within. Dive right into the dynamic combat, finishing off the devilish enemies. Delight in tossing them around, knocking them out, and sending them deep into the pits.
Development
Dodge Roll is still the developer of Enter the Gungeon 2, retaining Devolver Digital as the publisher. Dodge Roll is a small team of four core members and two other associates who contribute as unofficial members. At the time of the announcement, the team did not reveal any timelines for the development or when they began working on their upcoming game. However, if their original entry is anything to go by, Enter the Gungeon 2 could be released in the year 2026 or later. Development for Enter the Gungeon started in 2014, and the game dropped in April 2016, taking them about two years to release the game.
Enter the Gungeon 2 follows all the major roguelike principles of the first entry, making its development even easier. However, the team is replacing the vibrant pixels seen in the first entry with 3D art. Devolver Digital describes the game as “a reloaded, high-caliber sequel to the iconic bullet-hell dungeon crawler, reinforced with a 3D art style, new weapons and enemies, and expanded gameplay.”
Trailer
Dodge Roll dropped their upcoming game’s announcement along with a teaser trailer. While the trailer is quite short, at 0:30 minutes, it captured fans' attention and triggered a wave of anticipation pending the game’s launch. The trailer perfectly captures what players loved about Enter the Gungeon, its creativity and difficulty, and that’s not all. It also hints at the new features players can expect, including the evolutionary visual design. The characters are more vibrant and full of colour, and the soundtrack in the background aligns well with the dread and intense action involved. The Gungeons also appear more lively in 3D than the original game's pixelated aesthetics.
Release Date & Platforms
According to the most recent announcement on the game’s Steam page, Enter the Gungeon 2 will be released in 2026. However, the developer and publisher have yet to announce an exact date when fans can expect the actual game or an early access version. According to the announcement, Enter the Gungeon will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam for PC.
Nevertheless, that also doesn’t rule out whether the game will be available for other consoles. The original game initially launched for PC and PlayStation 4 in April 2016, with the Xbox One and Nintendo dropping in April and December 2017. Therefore, although the developers have only announced the release for PC and the Nintendo Switch 2, fans can expect Enter the Gungeon 2 on other consoles in the future.
