What is Deepest Fear?

It is a captivating sci-fi horror FPS with a retro-future look. It features Metroidvania exploration, immersive-sim problem solving, and a perfected fluid simulation. Cast underwater, players explore a facility filled with darkness and mystery. They focus on surviving the horror that resides there. Underneath those waters, an ancient force that lay dormant has been reawakened. Now, the fate of the human race hangs in the balance. 

You take on the role of Dr Danni Carrol, tasked with getting to the core of the project, masterminded and decoding its secrets. Additionally, you are also searching for your estranged father, who is behind the project and allegedly responsible for the release of the ancient force. You engage in battle with dark entities in a real-time fluid simulation where there’s a possibility that the water might sweep you away during a flood. 

Story

The title follows the narrative of Dr Danni Carrol, who is on a mission to uncover the secrets behind her estranged father’s project. Carroll’s father created a project which focused on discovering the mysteries behind the ancient origins of humans. During his quest for these truths, he unleashed a dark, ancient force into the world. The force had been dormant for a long time at the bottom of the ocean. It now threatens to wreak havoc, which endangers the human race. In a state of panic, Danni is forced into military service after they lose control of their deadliest asset. She is sent to the bottom of the ocean to try and locate her estranged father. Moreover, she has to stop him from further pursuing the project. 

She lands in The Neptune Facility and ends up trapped there with no hope of getting rescued. The area is teeming with monstrous creatures emerging from all corners of the world. Danni will have to kill them before they kill her in a fight for survival. She expertly wields improvised tools and advanced technology to fight against the mysterious threat that is intent on causing destruction. 

Gameplay

In the gameplay, you take control of Dr. Danni Carrol as she dives deep into the ocean in search of her father. Additionally, she seeks to find answers regarding the project masterminded. It holds both terrifying and deeply personal discoveries in relation to her father. Players engage in battle with ancient, terrifying creatures in a real-time fluid simulation. The creatures pop out of any present water source, so players will have to be constantly on guard. Creativity and wit will be your saving grace as the events occurring in the game’s narrative are extremely unpredictable. 

Combining the aspects of Metroidvania games with the prowess of an FPS immersive sim, the title provides a unique environment in a puzzle-driven horror experience. Water in the game is a threat to fear. Not only because of the creatures inside it but because it is basically alive. The real-time fluid simulation creates unpredictable dangers, such as the collapse of the rotting structure of the facility. Further, there is a high chance of you drowning in the ocean depths. Dangerous currents can sweep you away, as the facility is prone to flooding. Luckily, you have a wide range of weapons and highly advanced technology to fight the terror before and solidify your survival. 

The Metroidvania-style exploration supports backtracking, which provides an amazing opportunity for fear and terror to reign in the game. Also, the game’s semi-random lockdown events can occur virtually anywhere because the game features unpredictable enemy spawns. It leads to an increase in the intensity of the gameplay, even when returning to areas previously explored and found safe. Furthermore, this lockdown mechanic makes Deepest Fear a game that players can replay multiple times. The fact that you encounter different scenarios in the same places you’ve already gone through will definitely keep you on your toes. 

Development

Variable State is responsible for the development of this captivating title starring Dr. Danni Carroll. The studio is also behind acclaimed titles like Last Stop and Virginia, which are huge fan favorites. We trust that Deepest Fear follows suit. The protagonist fights her way to the core of a deadly project that could severely destroy humanity. The game embodies the themes of the 1980s horror action films such as The Abyss, The Thing, The Fly, and Total Recall, among others. It perfectly reflects a blend of visceral horror, vivid characterization, and confrontational storytelling.

The trailer for this new title was released during the PC Gaming Show this year. It depicts heavy themes of the 80s Hollywood horror vibe. The game features a sci-fi horror shooter narrative that takes place underwater. Water in this game is a real and living threat made so by the real-time fluid simulation. Additionally, it is crawling with monstrous creatures emerging from any water source. The creatures appear in the main character’s path, plaguing them as they explore a flooded deep-sea facility. As the protagonist, Dr. Danni Carroll, you are trapped in this facility, and from the looks of it, no one is coming to rescue you. Therefore, you must combine your wit with the supply of weapons at your disposal to survive and uncover the secrets.

Release Date and Platforms

Recently, developer Variable State announced their new game, Deepest Fear. The game is a sci-fi horror first-person shooter whose release date has yet to be confirmed. It is set to release on PC via Steam.
