Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow — Everything We Know

Struggling to overcome that post-Little Nightmares blues? If so, then you'll be pleased to know that Frozen Line and Ravenage Games are working to deliver a new type of atmospheric horror. And if all goes according to plan, then the aptly titled  Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow should be heading to all major consoles later this year. That's excluding PC, which will be getting first dibs on the game on May 24, 2023.

So, what is Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow, and how will it breathe new life into the ever-evolving world of doom and gloom? Well, here's everything we've been able to find out since first hearing of its existence back in 2022.

What Is Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow?

Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow is an upcoming third-person atmospheric adventure game by Frozen Line. In a similar vein to the likes of In Nightmare, Among the Sleep, Little Nightmares, and more recently, Bramble: The Mountain King, the story will follow a young boy who's trapped in a dark fantasy world—a collection of memories, of sorts, that relate to his deepest, darkest fears. This is where you, playing alongside both Griffin and his plush companion Birly, will “embark on a journey to discover what lurks beyond their nightmares.”

In the words of Frozen Line: “Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow is an atmospheric adventure game telling the touching story of Griffin, a boy who is trapped in an unknown and unwelcoming world and can only count on his friend, Birly the teddy bear. Solving puzzles and running away from scary monsters, they embark on a journey to discover there is more to this world than just nightmares.”

Story

Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow follows the tale of Griffin, a small boy who awakens in a mysterious world shrouded in “floating castles, rugged caves, fairytale forests and sunny plains.” In a bid to make sense of the strange new land he finds himself in, both Griffin and his larger-than-life teddy bear set out to uncover its secrets.

“Have you ever woken up in a surreal universe with a living teddy bear companion by your side? We didn’t think so,” reads the elevator pitch. “Step into Griffin’s shoes as he attempts to shed light on the mystery of this strange new world. Embark on a sweeping adventure and unravel a heartwarming story of two friends achieving the impossible in the face of doubt.”

“The duo's journey will not be easy,” the blurb adds. “Traversing the expanse of light and darkness will force the pair to confront traumatic memories and make amends with the monsters of the past.”

Gameplay

Judging from the screenshots and trailer Frozen Line has provided, the gameplay in Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow will pay tribute to a multitude of well-received puzzle platformers. What's interesting here, though, is its inclusion of a companion—a teddy bear named Birly, to be precise. Rather than operate the one protagonist, you will also need to make use of the plush's various skills to unravel more of the world's secrets and lore.

“Enlist Birly's help to solve intricate puzzles and explore a new world,” reads the pitch. “You control Griffin directly, but can also pick up, throw and issue commands to your teddy bear companion to aid your progress.”

A puzzle game at heart, players can expect to see an enormous variation of thought-provoking challenges, many of which will require two sets of hands to solve. Outside of that, Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow will feature a selection of biomes to explore and quest in, which will no doubt tie in to an overarching narrative and theme.

Development

For those who don't recall, Frozen Line and Ravenage Games first announced their plans to bring the atmospheric horror game to PC back in 2022. Since then, the studio has teased a short demo, which launched over on Steam partway through 2022, and an entire tapestry of gameplay previews. So, hardly a tough target to identify.

Going by the company's portfolio, Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow will serve as its first official project, and will shape up for a May 24 release on PC. If all goes according to plan, then it should also launch on consoles at a later date. A release window has yet to be confirmed.

Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow - Official Gameplay Trailer

As luck would have it, Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow does, in fact, have a few added trailers to boot. And not just the one initial announcement trailer, but a generous selection of gameplay previews and demos, too. You can catch the original teaser for yourself in the video embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow will be coming to PC via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store on May 24, 2023. It'll also be heading to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Switch, though Frozen Line has yet to formally announce a release date. Here's hoping, if any time at all, it'll be before year's end.

Let it be said that avid collectors are in for some rather disappointing news, as neither Frozen Line nor Ravenage Games have mentioned anything about any special editions outside of the standard copy. Having said that, as the game is still gearing up for a console release, it could be that something of the sort comes to light sooner or later. Don't quote us on that, though.

Unfortunately, it's the same scenario with subscription-based platforms, i.e. Game Pass and PlayStation Plus. As it stands, neither of the two have promoted Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow as one of their future releases. But if it does arrive ok either of the two, then news will no doubt spread over on the respective platforms' front pages.

If you're planning on staying in the loop ahead of the game's release, then be sure to follow Frozen Line over on its official social feed here. If anything changes before its May 24 launch, we'll be sure to fill you in on all the key details right here on gaming.net.
