Combo Devils: Everything We Know

Since time immemorial, fighting games have been one of the driving forces in the video gaming franchise. Set against other characters, this genre sweats out each player while sitting on their comfy sofa with a gamepad in their hands. Each moment, the player has to quickly strategize and send out hand-to-hand kicks with the hope of knocking down the opponent to take the victory.

With this aspect, developers have come out in numbers, trying to recreate the traditional sense of the genre while living up to its platformer growth. This time, Punkzilla has come out with a promise that they have a game that will truly merge traditional fighting combat with the emerging platformers.

Over time, several developers came forward, offering such promises. However, as players got into their game time, they realized the dream was still a bit far-fetched. However, following Punkzilla's description of their upcoming title, Combo Devils, players are reviving their optimism once again. As the game quickly gains traction, here is everything we have gathered about the Combo Devils.

What is Combo Devils?

Combo Devils is an action platformer game announced during the December 7, 2023, premiere of The Game Awards celebration. The game features aesthetically pleasing 2D graphics that help invigorate the look and feel of traditional fighting games.

The action platformer will host three main modes. Players will get the option to duo in the 1v1 Competitive mode, where you will fight using most traditional fighting concepts like power-ups, air dashes, and life meters. The second mode is the Campaign mode, and finally, the eye-catcher is the Co-op Roguelite mode.

Gameplay

Unlike most of the games introduced at the TGA, Punkzilla is coming out this month to rally for their upcoming title. The team is actively engaging with fans on Reddit, Discord, and other platforms. They are also actively taking interviews as a way to market the Combo Devils. From the looks of it, the title is as great as portrayed in the reveal trailer.

Regarding its gameplay, players will have an array of options to select from in the game. If you select the one-on-one competitive mode, be ready to sweat your palms out. This mode is completely action-driven, with every turn and move becoming a critical step in your gameplay.

The tutorial is found in the game's Campaign mode. You should also turn to this mode when you need to cool off some steam from the intense combat experience. This mode provides multiple fun and engaging side quest alternatives.

Finally, the thrilling Co-op Roguelite mode. This whole idea is just mind-blowing. With this roguelike phenomenon, players get to play alongside friends or on solo missions to fight off evil bosses. Here, the game allows you to unravel your exploration thirst as you traverse through the deadly locations of Combo Devils. However, everything isn't that easy. As you progress in your adventure, you will face increasingly vicious enemies. How far can you and your team survive?

From what we have gathered, Combo Devils allows air movements, back walking, and, of course, front movements. Any air dash is called a flash step. Flash steps cancel normal air hits and super jumps. While on the ground, players receive a good share of combo strikeouts. In this case, you can get weak normals, strong normals, specials, or supers. Depending on your strategy, the combo you get can easily cancel out a combo on a higher level.

Combo Devils has game shield meters to calculate your shield health. Shields will help you block out your opponent's attacks from time to time. For the shield to be effective, players must angle it in the opponent's direction.

While playing, you should watch out for the amount of damage you receive. Each damage is recorded in the PSI bar. When the damage is above 100, some of your combat ability becomes inactive. When the bar fills up to the latter, your character might explode. Another impressive fighting aspect we have noticed in the game is using external items in your fights. The game also allows you to strike killer reversals that will earn you a KO into your victory. Additionally, if the character hits a wall while the PSI meter is above 100, you automatically receive a KO and grant your opponent victory.

Characters and Development

Punkzilla is the team behind the development of Combo Devils. The game is currently in the development process. From the videos released, the game will incorporate artistic styles with highly curated game mechanics. One of the things that makes fans believe in this game is that Punkzilla hosts a number of skilled fighting devs from renowned franchises.

From the trailer and demo video, Combo Devils has an array of impressive characters at your disposal. According to the team, the game currently has approximately 15 characters. However, they are looking to expand the list to 20 by January 2024.

The game's trailer has offered some epic insight into the game. From this trailer, fighting game fans took a liking to it, leading to the growing rise of curiosities. Fortunately, Punkzilla promises to keep us in the loop as they actively share their aspirations towards Combo Devils. In addition to the trailer, the team has released a demo video giving more intimate details about its gameplay strategies. However, this game is not yet available for a public demo just yet.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

Combo Devils will land on Steam for PC owners on a date that is yet to be announced. Currently, Punkzilla has not mentioned whether the game will be available on any consoles. The game is currently only available for wishlisting on its official Steam page here. Unfortunately, we are also not aware of the editions the game will support.
