Whispike Survivors: Sword of the Necromancer

Whispike Survivors first made its way into gaming via Sword of the Necromancer. The latter is a dungeon-crawler action RPG that features roguelike elements. In the game, players can uniquely revive fallen enemies and have them fight for their cause. Above all, the characters and story stole the show. So, it’s a no-brainer developer Grimorio of Games spun it into a spin-off: Whispike Survivors

Although Grimorio of Games only recently announced Whispike Survivors, it’s already causing a stir in gaming. Some can’t wait to get their hands on the game. While others are skeptical about how worthwhile it’s going to be. There are still plenty of questions about the intricacies of the spin-off. However, a few core details are official. So, you’re in the know, here’s Whispike Survivors: Sword of the Necromancer – Everything We Know so far.

What is Whispike Survivors: Sword of the Necromancer?

Whispike Survivors: Sword of the Necromancer

Whispike Survivors: Sword of the Necromancer is an upcoming spin-off game of Sword of the Necromancer. Developer Grimorio Games only recently announced its development. It’s a game kind of like Vampire Survivors. Genre-wise, you may describe it as a  blend of the horde survivor and farm simulator genres. Although an exact release date is yet to be confirmed, Whispike Survivors: Sword of the Necromancer is currently available on Steam. You can add it to your wishlist here, so you’re notified as soon as the game launches.

Story

Whispike Survivors: Sword of the Necromancer

For now, we don’t have the exact storyline nailed down. However, we do know that Whispike Survivors: Sword of the Necromancer will curate its story around surviving hordes of enemies called Whispikes while cultivating your Whispike farm to breed the strongest hybrid of them all.

Gameplay

Players will take on the role of a creature called Whispike. They will need to go up against other Whispikes in battle. Each player will have a farm where they can grow stronger Whispikes. Once mature, they can harvest them and fight again. With each harvest, the player’s Whispike will grow stronger, up until you remain the last man standing.

Just like in real-life, cultivating and nurturing a farm isn’t a walk in the park. You’ll need to collect seeds, plant them, and wait for them to grow before you can harvest them. You may use manure to nourish the seeds. You can also combine seeds to create stronger hybrids.

Cultivate the Strongest Whispike of Them All

Seeds are collected from dropped enemies. You’ll need to plant these on your Whispike farm to grow a Whispike creature. Each seed will presumably have the traits and skills of its origin, Whispike. Also, the more Whispikes you defeat, the more seeds you can collect. Thereafter, combine the strongest seeds to cultivate even stronger hybrids.

Another interesting feature is that you can use fallen Whispikes as manure. Using manure helps speed up the growth of Whispikes. Oh, and if you die, you’ll need to collect your last Whispike’s seed and cultivate it to spring your soldier back up.

Meanwhile, you can use the default Whispikes to fight. Until your Whispikes mature into “adults,” be ready for battle. It’s not exactly quick math to nurture strong hybrids. Ideally, planting seeds in neighboring slots will combine the original seeds’ attributes. But sometimes, you may not get what you want.

Survive Hordes of Vicious Critters

Farm simulation is only part of the puzzle. Whispike Survivors: Sword of the Necromancer’s other major gameplay feature is fighting against waves of Whispikes at a time. Literally called, “hordes,” it can’t be easy to constantly come out on top. Plus, it’s the only way to cultivate the strongest Whispike of them all. We love a good challenge, though, so bring it on.

Development

Whispike Survivors: Sword of the Necromancer

Developer Grimorio of Games has assured fans that Whispike Survivors: Sword of the Necromancer is currently in development. According to the official Twitter page, Whispike Survivors will be available “very soon.” It’s rather difficult to speculate on the exact date the game might release. Especially since Grimorio of Games is also working on a third-person 3D action RPG called Sword of the Necromancer: Revenant. There’s also a Kickstarter campaign currently in play. Whether this slows down the spin-off's release is hard to say. We do hope, though, that “very soon” is only a few months away.

Fun fact: the first official announcement of Whispike Survivors: Sword of the Necromancer was on April Fool’s Day. The Twitter announcement revealed that Sword of the Necromancer: Revenant had been canceled. Instead, they’ll focus on developing Whispike Survivors, a new game that blends farming with reverse bullet hell. Later, Twitter user Nobunaga Jubei posted how it was obviously a joke and only the part about canceling Revenant. He re-affirmed that:
