Warhammer: Dawn of War — Everything We Know
Imagine if 2004’s Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War were released today. That’s the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV in a nutshell. And quite exciting, too, given that the original game set the bar for the series. And well, the sequels two and three never quite reached their fullest potential. Most especially Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III, whose every gameplay element was disappointing. Boring campaign. A mix of MOBA and traditional RTS gameplay that didn’t quite stick its landing. Stripped-down building and progression from the deeply satisfying run of the first game.
It may be too soon to tell whether the upcoming entry will redeem the series to its former glory. You might want to tread with caution, at least until KING Arl, developer of Iron Harvest, is finished tinkering around with the gameplay system. For now, you might want to get up to speed with all that’s been promised so far via our Warhammer: Dawn of War — Everything We Know article below.
What is Warhammer: Dawn of War?

This is the fourth rodeo, you could say, of the Warhammer: Dawn of War series. Launching in 2004 to massive critical acclaim, the series has kept fans pleased with its hot take on military sci-fi real-time strategy gameplay system. Players launch planetary war in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. You control various factions in the brutal and gruesome fight to the death, whether via single-player campaign or intense multiplayer battles. Meanwhile, the series has also received expansion packs, as well as a remaster of the original and its three expansions titled the “Definitive Edition” in August 2025.
While the original game kicked the ball out of the park, and the second game experimented with fresh gameplay to appeal to a mostly worldwide audience, the third game garnered mixed reviews. Hence, hesitation on whether Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV manages to be the comeback the series needs.
Anyway, so far, we can confirm the upcoming game will follow in its predecessors’ footsteps. It’ll be a real-time strategy game, more similar to the original entry. Players will engage in different strategic play, controlling four factions in a vicious planetary war. This includes the renowned Adeptus Mechanics, making its debut. Moreover, the fourth game will implement the most extensive campaign yet, featuring over 70 missions. It’ll also feature multiple game modes, including Last Stand, Skirmish, and Multiplayer, whether online PvP or co-op modes.
Story

You’ll return to planet Kronus to wage dutiful and outrageous war against the enemies of humanity. This time, you’ll have four factions at your disposal, whether the Space Marines, Orks, Necrons, or debuting Adeptus Mechanicus, each unraveling its own unique campaign. As always, battles will take place on a chaotic and massive battlefield, with mayhem flying through every corner and space. However, you’ll also engage with other systems, including completing 70+ campaign missions either yourself or with a friend.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV’s story will be brought to you by renowned Black Library author John French, who’ll have plenty to prove following Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III flop. Apparently, this’ll be the biggest Dawn of War saga yet, told via cinematic intros and fully animated cutscenes. Well, let’s wait and see how the duly anticipated brutal warfare unfolds.
Gameplay

Traditional real-time strategy, massive battles, and base-building will all feature in the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV. This’ll all culminate in engaging and deeply satisfying strategic gameplay that also includes an expanded Sync Kill system. Your goal will be to dominate the planet Kronus against various threats to humanity. And you’ll do so by commanding four factions across dedicated campaigns.
In between cinematic intros and animated cutscenes, you’ll be battling for your life in wide-scale warzones. You can take on enemies in either Last Stand or Skirmish modes. But also opt for intense multiplayer sessions.
So, which factions will you pick? They all have unique commanders, units, building elements, and overall gameplay mechanics. And thus, it will provide replayability by experimenting with them all. If you’ve played the first game, you should settle in well in the fourth entry, given its return to the roots of the series. Over time, you’ll level up your faction, build a base of operations that helps you progress and upgrade, as well as tinker around with the expanded Sync Kill system.
Whether you take on 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3 multiplayer, you can guarantee an endless loop of melee and brutal warfare. And with the Painter tool, you can stand out from the crowd.
Development

Developer KING Art Games and publisher Deep Silver are hard at work bringing Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV to completion. Given KING Art’s involvement in Iron Harvest, we can at least look forward to a similar innovative and epic campaign. They’ve also developed The Dwarves and Battle Worlds: Kronos, while Deep Silver has published Saints Row, Dead Island, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and more. Undoubtedly an excellent duo, one we wish the absolute best of luck.
Trailer
At present, you can watch the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV official announcement trailer, revealed at the Gamescom Opening Night Live event. Not only does Warhammer showcase pretty goosebump-heavy cutscenes of the planet Kronus takeover. It also showcases in-game gameplay, subject to more development and polish. Indeed, “only in death does duty end,” as the Blood Ravens, once again, take a courageous stand against all who threaten the future of humanity.
