Spectre Divide: Everything We Know

At first sight, Spectre Divide looks ravishing hot. Sure, it dons inspirations from Valorant, Apex Legends, and more tactical team shooters. But it also innovates on gameplay you may have seen before to set itself apart from the crowd. The developing team has held a couple of beta tests, and from the looks of it, it seems gamers can’t wait to get their hands on the final game. As the closed beta picks up steam, we’ve compiled everything we know about the upcoming game, Spectre Divide.

What is Spectre Divide?

Spectre Divide is an upcoming 3v3 tactical shooter game. According to the game’s Steam description, the game plans to evolve the genre. More precisely, it plans to incorporate “duality” in gameplay, where players can control two characters at the same time. That way, you can be in two places at once, attacking and defending enemies flooding either location. Apparently, you can choose to either carry the burden yourself or trade one of your characters. Either way, you’ll dive deep into tactical gunplay that tests your proficiency with wielding different weapons in a futuristic theme.

Story

Spectre Divide’s story is still a bit sketchy. Steam barely goes deep into the plot you can expect in the final game. However, the trailer does reveal the time setting will be in the year 2100. Other than the time frame, we have no clue about the story the game plans to tell or if there will be any profound plot. However, we can at least anticipate science fiction and fantasy elements, with a comic book art style and “classic Japanese animation of the ‘90s.” Characters and environments will appear like hand-drawn designs of the concept sketch. From the trailer, the art style stans with vibrant color palettes and intricately designed maps.

Gameplay

The standout gameplay feature is duality. Controlling two characters at the same time sounds strange, but the game makes it work. You’ll have a main character and a second one called a Spectre. While you control your main character on the battlefield, you can switch to the Spectre at any time.

You’ll often need to swap between characters when enemies are approaching your Spectre. Alternatively, you can tactfully use your Spectre to cover multiple locations. By controlling two characters, you’ll be of much help to your teammates striving to destroy waves of enemies in a battle arena.

Further, when you die, you can still remain on the battlefield using your Spectre. That way, you have two lives to give you more time to win the game. Here are the key features you can expect in the final game.

Key Features

  • Tactical gunplay: Battles will be intense as you strive to stay alive. Your weapons will mostly be guns, which will require accurate shooting to survive. A neat twist is you’ll be able to aim while running. Spectre Divide plans to feature 20 different weapons, each one free to string together an infinite number of combos.
  • Futuristic weapons: The game will have eight Sponsor kits, each curated for a specific play style. Some weapons will be explosive-based, others will be traps. All the weapons will incorporate duality. Later on, you’ll be able to craft more powerful weapons.
  • Competitive gameplay: While you can choose to play solo or in a team, all the missions will thrive on competition. However, you can choose to play casually with friends or customize your play. Get ready to jump into weekly competitions. These will have as many as 50 to 60 players per match. Matches will have a global leaderboard ranking the best players. Moreover, you’ll access custom networking and modern anti-cheat tools to beat the competition.
  • Anime-inspired art style: The art style will draw inspiration from classic Japanese animation. From the trailer, the visuals look like comic book art with hand-drawn designs and sci-fi elements.
  • Character customization: You’ll be free to design your own character, with options for faces, hair, tattoos, clothes, and weapons. You can customize your character to show off your personal style.

Development

Mountaintop Studios is currently working on developing and publishing Spectre Divide. But while the studio plans to handle development and marketing on its own, they have enlisted the help of professional FPS gamer Shroud. You probably know Shroud, a Canadian YouTuber and former gamer with a steady following. He has expertise in the FPS genre and will be working as the lead gameplay advisor for Mountaintop Studios.

According to Steam, Shroud has helped with the design and fine-tuning of the upcoming game, enabling a “tight competitive experience.” As Shroud puts it, “I witnessed firsthand Mountaintop’s desire to bring something fresh to the tactical shooter genre. And over the past two years working together, we’ve honed in on something I really think you’ll love.”

Mountaintop Studios has been gracious in opening up the game to gamers. Those lucky enough to participate in the August 3, 2024, limited stress test were able to catch a glimpse into the gameplay. If you’d like to experience the gameplay first-hand, you can sign up for the closed beta test running from August 13, 2024, to August 21, 2024. The feedback has been stellar so far, which only raises the anticipation for the final game.
