Mega Man: Dual Override — Everything We Know

Mega Man: Dual Override — Everything We Know

Never say never to games you used to love and enjoy whatever number of decades ago. For a series like Mega Man, the first game launched in 1987 on the NES. Since then, we’ve had lots of titles in the series, including 11 main games, lots of spin-offs, mobile ports, Japan-only releases, expansions into Mega Man Legends, Mega Man Battle Network, and Mega Man Star Force franchises, which then went on to release several installments… the total might add up to over 100 titles and spin-offs to date.

But the momentum kind of died down. Rather than a few years between releases, we got development time jumps from 2010’s Mega Man 10 to 2018’s Mega Man 11. And it’s not even that Mega Man 11 didn’t do well. Its classic action-platforming was fantastic, introducing new double gear mechanics and implementing clever levels and tight controls. The fanbase is still holding strong as well. Lord knows, the announcement of an upcoming 11th main entry to the series got lots of veterans and newbies hella excited.

So, what can you expect? Tag along while we unwind everything we know about Mega Man: Dual Override so far.

What is Mega Man: Dual Override?

Mega Man: Dual Override — Everything We Know

Mega Man: Dual Override is an upcoming action platforming mainline entry to the long-running Mega Man franchise by Capcom. It plans to follow the series’ roots of classic platforming design, featuring robotic enemies, rampant obstacles, and set in a futuristic, colorful world. Picking up where 2018’s Mega Man 11 left off, we’ll be receiving the 11th mainline entry to the series, despite the new game lacking a numbered title.

Story

Mega Man

Mega Man: Dual Override’s story is currently scarce. Even Steam doesn’t reveal the characters or setting we’ll be playing in. So, all we can do now is speculate based on the marketing material released so far. For one, you’ll be fighting “legions of robots.” But you’ll also be “springboarding across a new array of futuristic frontiers.” These suggest the series will be sticking to the script of the series’ roots.

The setting we’ve come to love, of a futuristic, but dystopian sci-fi world, where robots and AI are advanced. Chaos ensues, often technological catastrophes between humans and robots, which instigates Mega Man’s mission and fight to the rescue.

The blue bomber (Mega Man) is featured in the trailer, likely the main character. He’s often the blue super robot hero of Dr. Light’s creation, who fights evil robots like Dr. Wily, and takes over their powers. His story is pretty cute, with his initial duties as a household robot, and now having to save the world.

But we also hear Proto Man’s signature whistle at the end of the trailer, which often plays before his appearance, suggesting that he may be teaming up with Mega Man. Proto Man is Mega Man’s elder brother. Well, he was Dr. Light’s first robot, but grew to become the rival red robot with a yellow scarf, sometimes mentor. He’ll likely return with his signature Proto Shield, too, used for defense but also melee weapon.

Meanwhile, Dr. Light’s voice also welcomes us to the trailer, with the words, “the world needs saving again.” It’s all exciting, and I can’t wait to see his relationship with his kids evolve.

Gameplay

But you’ll probably not be playing Mega Man: Dual Override for its story, at least not primarily so. Its most exciting component is the platforming and action gameplay. Unfortunately, we have little information on this end as well, and can only rely on speculation, at least for now. With Mega Man 11 as the latest in the series, I suppose the new game will follow in its footsteps.

You can expect classic 2D platforming. The newly introduced Double Gear system in Mega Man 11 is also likely to return. This allowed you to boost your speed and attack power, temporarily. And the usual fighting against enemy Robot Masters, and keeping their weapons for yourself, as well as platforming obstacles and challenges packed with hazards and enemies. Visually, Mega Man: Dual Override will look closest to Mega Man 11, as the trailer already illustrates.

But at launch, the new game will be nine years older than its predecessor. So, I’m definitely expecting lots of innovations in its systems and visuals, too. I’m curious about the meaning of “Dual Override,” especially with regard to gameplay. Will it replace Double Gear? Or is it an entirely new system to override challenges in some cool way? What are your thoughts?

Development

blasts

The development of Mega Man: Dual Override started way long before the official announcement by Geoff Keighley at The Game Awards 2025. What’s most exciting is that the developer and publisher, Capcom, held a Robot Master Design Contest from December 11, 2025, to January 1, 2026. Apparently, Dr. Wily needed your help in defeating Mega Man. Specifically, he was looking to select the best designs of a Robot Master. How cool is that? The design had to have a right arm, which can suction immense power, though.

If you missed out on the submission period, don’t worry. You can still participate in voting for the best design out of the top 20 designs selected by Capcom between January 30, 2026, and February 6, 2026. While the winner will have their design feature in the game, six others will also have their names appear in the credits.

So, what’s still pending? Watching the announcement trailer, of course. It’s how you’ll really grasp a better idea of what’s to come.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

You’re going to need to be a little bit more patient, as Mega Man: Dual Override will be coming in 2027. The plan is to align its release with the 40th Anniversary of the Mega Man franchise. Apparently, there are many more surprises coinciding with the Anniversary celebration. So, keep a lookout via the socials. Read your PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch, Switch 2, and PC via Steam for the final launch. I guess PS4 and Xbox One will still be receiving games next year.
