Lost Rift: Everything We Know

Lost Rift: Everything you need to know

From the developer of Outriders comes a new survival adventure game called Lost Rift. The two games could be nothing alike, well, except for their co-op multiplayer mode. Otherwise, Outriders leaned more on the bloody, violent side. Its world crumbled within a dark and desperate sci-fi universe.

With the frenetic gunplay and engaging RPG mechanics, Outriders carved developer People Can Fly’s name in stone. Now, the same developer is returning with Lost Rift, set on a desert island filled with supernatural and horrific creatures.

You won’t have to trek through the treacherous world alone, with the freedom to jump into PvPvE modes. But what else do we know about the new game? Read on as we uncover everything we know about Lost Rift so far.

What is Lost Rift?

Lost Rift

Lost Rift is an upcoming first-person shooter game that will blend survival mechanics and adventure gameplay. You’ll build a fortified base on a desert island that can withstand the dangers in the environment in PvE co-op mode.

Meanwhile, you’ll also have access to a competitive PvP extraction mode. If you choose to play with others, you’ll be allowed to team up in groups of five. However, you can choose to venture into Lost Rift’s mysterious archipelago solo.

Story

Craftting

The story of Lost Rift goes: An unnamed player washes up on the shores of a desert island called Pioneer’s Landing. While the island is breathtaking, it also harbors a hidden mystery.

You’ll dive into your playthrough, exploring the island in PvE mode. You’ll gather resources for survival, building a base, and crafting valuable tools. Both plants and animals will help you stay alive, even as you prepare for the intense PvP quests.

Lost Rift seems to take an open-world concept, where you can explore the island freely and make your own decisions. With each choice you make, you’ll shape your journey forward that determines your legacy, whether in battle or as a survivor.

Gameplay

Hippo

Lost Rift is described as a “high-stakes FPS.” It plans to create a rich and immersive world full of mystery. What’s more? Every choice you make will carry consequences that impact your fate.

The first order of business will be to build a fortified base camp. You can set up shop anywhere on the island. The building mechanics seem in-depth, with modular tiles and varied resources for crafting. We presume your resources will be enough to build a base that feels like home. Besides building and crafting, you’ll also be able to cook to survive.

Once you set up a base, it’s time to embark on intense PvPvE missions. Your expeditions will culminate in frenetic shootouts against online players. Both time and skill will be factors in making it out alive. However, you’ll also be battling for precious loot in an extraction-based gameplay style. To safely extract loot, you’ll need gunplay prowess and strategy in navigating the island.

Furthermore, Lost Rift will add dynamic weather. And not just a change of seasons but also destructive weather changes like hurricanes, fires, and lightning. Events like strong winds and heavy rain may threaten survival as you cross dangerous rivers. Dense fog will minimize visibility in pursuit of rivals, among other challenges faced during exploration.

These are only a fraction of the content Early Access will deliver. According to the developers, they will add more content over time, including unlocking new areas on the map, adding more extraction-based missions, and expanding the story. They will add new biomes, landmarks, weapons, loots, building materials, predators, human enemies, and more exciting content to come.

Development

Lost Rift

People Can Fly is both the developer and publisher for Lost Rift. So far, they have released a Steam page for the upcoming game, an announcement trailer, and screenshots of the gameplay you can expect. People Can Fly is also planning to launch the game into Early Access.

When asked why they have chosen Early Access over a full launch, People Can Fly responded, “Player feedback will help us shape the best survival experience in Lost Rift, a project our development team has been pouring passion into for over 2 years.”

It’s clear that Lost Rift is an important project for People Can Fly. So, definitely share your feedback once Early Access drops to help refine the final product. User feedback, People Can Fly says, will noy only “improve core mechanics but also balance gameplay” and “expand the story of the mysterious islands.”

If you’re worried about a smooth connection, here’s what People Can Fly has to say: “Lost Rift uses dedicated, geo-located servers to provide a smooth and consistent experience across PvE and PvPvE.”

Trailer

Check out the announcement trailer for Lost Rift released at the Future Games Showcase Spring 2025. It’s quite the stunning depiction of the island we’ll be exploring, although with generic visuals. The combat, too, looks a bit finicky, hardly compared to the execution in Outriders

Yet the spooky encounters with horrific creatures do make your heart skip a beat. A spider is shown appearing out of nowhere and leaving you with split-seconds to react. The idea of online players, the environment, and the scary creatures living within it rivaling against you is exciting, especially for survival fans.

With the current state of the trailer, though, it’s uncertain whether People Can Fly will be able to deliver a thrilling survival adventure just as good, or perhaps even better, than their previous try.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

Build - Lost Rift

Lost Rift is coming soon. With only the announcement trailer released, it might be a while before we can get our hands on the final game. Yet given the developer’s plan to launch the game into Early Access, perhaps we’ll receive the game earlier than expected.

In any case, only PC owners will be able to play the game via Steam. With the Steam page out now, you can add Lost Rift to your wishlist. Alternatively, you can join the Discord channel to keep in touch with the developers, including inquiring whether there will be any editions, or follow the official social media handle here for more updates.
