Chasing survivors toward snowy steam train in Frostrail game

Shiro Unlimited and FakeFish have teamed up to bring something chilling to the survival game scene. Frostrail is their latest upcoming game, and it’s already turning heads with its haunting world, unique gameplay concept, and that steam-powered train.

If you’ve already seen the trailer, you might be asking: What exactly is Frostrail? Why is the world so cold? What are those strange creatures lurking in the snow? And how does the train fit into all of this?

The game is still in early development, but there’s already plenty to talk about. Here’s everything we know so far about Frostrail — from gameplay and development to release info and platform details.

What is Frostrail?

Frostrail is an upcoming open-world, survival first-person shooter that drops players into a frozen wasteland filled with horror, mystery, and a whole lot of snow. You’ll be exploring and surviving in this deadly world, either solo or with up to three friends in co-op. The game focuses on survival, crafting, exploration, and brutal combat — all while managing and upgrading your only hope of survival: a steam-powered train.

It isn’t just another survival shooter. It’s a bleak, frozen tale of survival, horror, and relentless exploration. You’re not just surviving the cold; you’re surviving what’s inside it. From monstrous enemies to the struggle of managing heat, ammo, and supplies, every decision could be the one that saves you… or ends you.

Frostrail Story

The full story of Frostrail is still under wraps, but here’s what we know so far. The game takes place in the frozen remains of a once-powerful empire — now buried under ice and crawling with twisted horrors. Something caused this brutal winter, something tied to a mysterious pact made by the empire’s former ruler. Whatever it was, it unleashed a supernatural cold that wiped out almost all life and corrupted everything in its path. You play as a Penitent Gardener, one of the few survivors left, traveling aboard a steam-powered train through this icy wasteland. Now, your goal is to cleanse the land, survive the cold, and face down the cursed creatures that now haunt the ruins.

Frostrail Gameplay

Frostrail is all about surviving at any cost in an unforgiving environment. Gameplay-wise, it’s a survival FPS with base-building elements, where your base is a moving train. Players will explore, scavenge, craft, and fight to stay alive. The world is open for you to roam (carefully!). You’ll venture out to loot scarce supplies from frozen ruins, scavenging anything useful from wreckage or long-abandoned bunkers. A core survival mechanic is managing heat and resources – the cold can kill you just as surely as any monster. Stray too far from your train and you risk freezing to death or being caught by something dangerous in the dark.

Furthermore, you have to keep the train’s furnace fed (fuel is life!), maintain its Eden Engine, and decide when it’s worth venturing out on foot. Every decision – when to stop, what to loot, whether to risk a detour – becomes a matter of life and death in the frost. Combat and progression are in the mix too, with a strong FPS twist. You’ll be facing off against the Revenants and other creatures in intense first-person battles. It also features a crafting system to create and upgrade your gear. You can build new tools and weapons from scrap you find, and even upgrade your train itself into a fortress on wheels.

As threats grow, your train should grow too – both in armament and capabilities. Survival isn’t meant to be a solitary affair either: Frostrail supports solo or 4-player co-op play. You can team up with friends (or other survivors) online, forming a crew to man the train and watch each other’s backs. Banding together will increase your odds against both the harsh environment and the foes that await. It’s about strategic survival: balancing time managing your train base versus time spent exploring and fighting.

Development

Frostrail’s development is a collaboration between two notable studios, and it has a promising pedigree. The game is being developed by FakeFish, the team best known for Barotrauma, a submarine survival co-op game that earned a solid fanbase thanks to its tense gameplay and deep mechanics. On the publishing side, Shiro Unlimited is handling things — this is the publishing arm of Shiro Games, the studio behind popular titles like Northgard, Wartales, and Dune: Spice Wars.

Moving forward, the devs are taking a player-first approach by launching Frostrail in Early Access on Steam in 2026. They believe in building the game alongside the community, using feedback to improve features, balance gameplay, and add new content. Their plan is to keep Frostrail in Early Access for about a year, though that could change depending on how development goes.

The Early Access version will already include the core gameplay mechanics, but the full version will expand on it with more biomes, loot, train upgrades, and tougher scenarios, especially for co-op play. The team is committed to sharing regular roadmaps and updates, and they’ll be actively engaging with players

The trailer offers a glimpse into the frozen world, showcasing combat, gun assembly, exploration, and the atmosphere players can expect. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check out the embedded video above, it’s definitely worth a watch.

Frostrail is set to launch in Early Access on Steam in 2026. That means it will be available for PC only, at least at first. There’s no word yet on whether console versions are planned, but given the game’s scope and early development stage, it’s likely the team is focusing on making the PC version the best it can be.

As for editions, details are still under wraps. However, we do know the game will start in Early Access and stay there for at least a year. The devs have already said that they’ll be adding more content during this time. They’ve also hinted that the price might go up when the game hits its full 1.0 release. So if you’re planning to dive into Frostrail, Early Access might be the best time to hop aboard the train. And for latest updates, you can follow the official social media account of the game here.
