Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves: Everything We Know

If you’re wondering why the name Fatal Fury sounds familiar, it’s because it’s a returning fighting game series after a long 26-year hiatus. Developed by SNK, the first title, Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, was launched in 1991 before panning out with Garou: Mark of the Wolves in 1999 on the Neo Geo system. Now, SNK is back with a brand new entry that’s fast approaching its launch day and ready to launch on next-gen consoles. As such, we’re definitely set to play through an overhaul of the original mechanics that will revamp the graphics and gameplay to a whole new level. Before launch day arrives, though, you want to be prepared with everything we know about Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves below.

What is Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves?

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is an upcoming fighting game. It's the newest entry in the Fatal Fury series since 1999’s Garou: Mark of the Wolves. It marks 26 years since the last game, which has rendered the series forgotten over time. However, SNK is ready to bring back the fury, launching the new title on next-gen consoles. 

Even as veterans highly anticipate the final launch and newcomers prepare to jump into lore as old as time, SNK has already provided a means to join in the waiting crowd with the option to put in a preorder for the physical copy today. Having first launched in 1991 to mostly positive acclaim, the Fatal Fury series has been significantly instrumental in propelling the fighting game genre to new heights.

It influenced the rise of fighting games in the ‘90s, which has since become one of the biggest gaming genres worldwide. With the last game in the series, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, launching in 1999, Fatal Fury has laid dormant. Now, SNK is ready to dust off the cobwebs and reinstate the franchise back to its former glory. 

Story

26 years down the line, the Fatal Fury universe is back. The new game will take us to the streets of South Town, where rampant action and wild dreams bloom. Even more so are the wild ambitions of the characters, which the website describes as “an epic tale of wolves who hunger for battle.” 

The first 1991 Fatal Fury game followed the adventures of brothers Terry and Andy Bogard, along with Japanese Muay Thai champion Joe Higashi. They embark on a quest for revenge against nefarious kingpin Geese Howard. The sequel then picked up the events a year later, following the first Fatal Fury female fighter, Mai Shiranui. Then, Fatal Fury Special picked up another year later with an all-star brawl featuring fighters from the two previous games. 

26 years real-world years later, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves features the Wolves fighting for control over Geese’s legacy. In the Arcade mode, you’ll explore the iconic South Town and unravel an epic saga as the fighters struggle to fill Geese Howard’s shoes. The fighters will be wide-ranging, featuring a mother, son, brother, master, friends, and enemies. These will fuel gripping emotions and spark memories, intertwining the characters’ destinies and fates.

While we don’t know the full details of the storyline, SNK’s website teases that “a new legend is about to unfold,” a legend involving uncovering the mysteries of the past while discovering the truth of the future.

Gameplay

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will be a versus fighting game featuring 22 old and new fighters. It’ll allow for up to two players to compete locally and two to 12 players to complete online. To access all of the game’s content, you will need an internet connection.

Among the biggest changes to the series’ original gameplay is the new REV system. Moreover, you can look forward to a unique art style and plenty of more battle systems that have been enhanced for the modern age.

Another exciting addition to the gameplay is two distinct control schemes, which veterans will easily jump into, while newcomers will find it fun and fresh. These and “other fresh features and elements” that SNK promises on their website will be coming to Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. 

More good news the game has just confirmed that footballer and world wide sensation will be a charcter in the game when it drops building more hype around its upcoming launch.

Development

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is the product of SNK Corporation. They are based in Osaka, Japan, and chaired by Representative Director and CEO Kenji Matsubara. The team launched an open beta test from February 20, 2025, to February 24, 2025, that you can download on PlayStation, Xbox, or Steam.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves’ release date is set in stone for April 24, 2025. That date isn’t too far away. Also, interested gamers can preorder a physical copy. You can play the game on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms via Steam and Epic Games Store.

A few things to note…

When you preorder the game, you’ll receive “Fatal Fury 2: Terry” as a bonus. This is a DLC costume that you can access once the game launches. Do note that the Deluxe edition is only available for PlayStation 5 users. There’s the option of upgrading your PlayStation 4 physical copy to a PlayStation 5 for free with a disc drive required.
