Annapurna unveiled the game during Tokyo Game Show 2025 as one of its highlight indie titles, and the nostalgic Zelda-like vibes were immediately clear. In other words, expect a polished hack-and-slash adventure with a mix of combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving, all wrapped in a charming, retro-inspired style. It’s not just a throwback though – Demi and the Fractured Dream also brings its own twist with a darker story and some new gameplay mechanics.

Story

The story of Demi and the Fractured Dream centers on its main hero Demi, a mysterious creature known as a Voidsent. Demi is cursed with void magic – a power that simultaneously eats away while also granting immense strength. It’s a classic “gift and a curse” setup, giving the plot a darker twist than a typical bright adventure. Guided by a mysterious voice from beyond, Demi is tasked with venturing into the dreamlike world of Somnus on a quest to prevent a catastrophe. The voice urges Demi to seek out and destroy three legendary monsters called the Accursed Beasts. These creatures threaten to bring about a “world-ending awakening,” so defeating them is crucial to saving the world.

Demi’s journey spans the varied realms of Somnus – including the Desert Kingdom and the Marsh Kingdom, among others. Each realm might include its own dungeon and beast lurking at the end. What makes the narrative even more compelling is the personal stake for Demi. The game teases that as your adventure unfolds, you’ll uncover ancient secrets and the truth behind your role in this world. This suggests there is far more hidden in Demi’s past or perhaps in the nature of Somnus than is immediately revealed.

Gameplay

Since the game is just announced, we haven’t played it yet – but thanks to trailers shown at TGS 2025, we have a solid idea of what the gameplay will be like. In short, it’s classic action-adventure gameplay with a modern polish. Players will control Demi in a third-person perspective, exploring the world, fighting monsters, and tackling puzzles in dungeons. If you’re a Zelda fan, you’ll feel right at home.

Combat involves a mix of melee attacks and magic, so you’ll be swinging a sword at foes and casting spells, giving you a variety of attack options. On top of that, character customization and progression seem to be features: you can unlock various charms to equip on Demi that enhance abilities or grant new perks.

Development

Behind this promising title is a small and passionate team: Yarn Owl Studios. They began as a two-person indie developer. Interestingly, as covered by The Verge, the origin of Demi and the Fractured Dream is rooted in a deep love for classic Zelda games. In fact, one of Yarn Owl’s founders, Fabian Willis, has a very personal inspiration story – his father gave him a copy of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past when he was young, which became a cherished memory and eventually inspired him to make games. After learning game development on his own, Fabian teamed up with the other founder, Chris Hofmann, and the duo set out to create their own Zelda-inspired adventure.

Demi and the Fractured Dream is that dream project brought to life. Annapurna Interactive saw the potential in Yarn Owl early and partnered with them as publisher. The developers clearly know their genre and are pouring their passion into creating a game that will resonate with fans of old-school action-adventures. Now it’s only a matter of time before we get to experience the final product for ourselves.

In the short reveal trailer, we don’t get to see much gameplay, but we do see Demi journeying through a mix of bright desert ruins and lush green forests, with each area filled with puzzles and enemies. Demi is shown using sword attacks and even a magic ability in one shot, and we also get a look at dodging and timing mechanics.
