DAVY x JONES: Everything We Know

Davy and Jones might be the most bizarre duo you will ever meet in gaming. Firstly, they used to be one person: Davy Jones, an infamous pirate captain. However, the poor captain’s head was chopped off.
So now, your severed skull goes by Davy, and is the brains of your revenge mission, while your headless body goes by Jones. And that combination opens up a plethora of exciting possibilities for gameplay.
Piracy in gaming is kicking and alive, with a new pirate game in town. But first, let’s take a look at everything you can expect to play through in our DAVY x JONES: Everything We Know article below.
What is DAVY x JONES?

DAVY x JONES is an upcoming pirate game, packed full of action. It’ll take you to a pirate-themed undersea and overland fantasy world, where creepy monsters with headless bodies and tentacles reside.
In fact, your protagonist is an infamous pirate captain with a headless body. And even more strange is their severed skull, which accompanies you on your mission, yapping about, and claiming to be “the brains of the operation.”
Essentially, you’re going after Blackbeard, the pirate who chopped your head off. But you have to clear a path through deadly pirates and monsters. All along, you’ll be shooting down enemies, keeping up pace with your severed skull, and keeping the legend of Davy Jones alive.
Story

Piracy fans will know Davy Jones from the Pirates of the Caribbean. He’s an antagonist in the film, partially sea creature, partially human, with tentacles for a beard, and captaining the ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman.
DAVY x JONES seems to adapt the legend of Davy Jones in its story, but only to a certain degree. This time, Davy Jones gets into an altercation with Blackbeard that leaves him with a severed head.
So, now, you embark on a treacherous mission seeking vengeance and living up to your legacy as a ruthless sea captain. After Blackbeard betrays, robs, and beheads you, Davy Jones finds himself in The Locker, where the dead pirate souls go to the afterlife.
Here’s where your revenge mission begins, with but a headless body to control and a severed skull to guide your way to reclaiming your stolen treasure and defeating your eternal nemesis: Blackbeard.
Gameplay

As much as it’ll take a duo to complete your revenge mission, it appears that you only control the pirate’s headless body, while your severed skull leads the way. It’ll be a bizarre alliance nonetheless, with your stubborn head often playing wise and cracking jokes.
The Locker, seen in the trailer, is a sight to behold. It’s the Hades of pirates, split into nine islands that float above on “an infinite sea of clouds.” Naturally, lots of hideous enemies will reside here, alongside cursed souls and legendary beasts.
Through intense swordplay, gunplay, and “grappling hook combat,” you’ll lay waste to all sorts of monsters. Combat will take place in a fast-paced, first-person perspective, with your severed skull stepping in every so often.
Furthermore, slain enemies will drop loot. However, the loot can either reap rewards or unleash an unpredictable enemy, hence incorporating a risk-versus-reward factor into gameplay.
For traversal, you’ll board Abby, a half-ship, half-whale vessel. Abby will act as your “base of operations,” harboring your weapons and becoming your ally. She can also host your newly recruited crew members, who are able to load the cannons and help thwart enemy ships.
Development

Parasight is working on developing and bringing DAVY x JONES to market. Based in Kraków, Poland, the Parasight team is made up of industry veterans who aspire to “create bold, character-driven games that merge gripping narratives with dynamic gameplay—inviting players to carve out their own legends and discover the unexpected.”
You can spot lots of similarities between DAVY x JONES and games like Shadows of the Damned. Evidently, the concept in the upcoming game is nothing new. Yet, the duo between a severed skull and a headless body is definitely a unique one. If the severed skull is doing most of the talking, however, it can be tricky to find the balance between humor and engaging chatter.
Among the key highlights Parasight is focusing on in the upcoming game is dark humor and surrealism. It’s the same concept they have applied to games like Blacktail, a classic Slavic folk story in the first-person, action-adventure genre.
Dark storytelling and vibrant fantasy worlds seem to be Parasight’s forte. And from Blacktail’s reviews, they seem to have knocked it out of the park. From the trailer, DAVY x JONES already boasts a stunning visual design. Now, it’s following up with punchy combat that feels as crunchy as it looks.
Trailer
DAVY x JONES trailer has been a joy to watch, with its stellar visuals and hilarious vibe. It sure does look good, with an undersea and gloomy vibe to the pirate-themed world. Most of all, we have a clearer picture of the story and gameplay we might expect. It appears you’ll be controlling the headless body of Jones, shooting enemies along the way.
Your severed skull, called Davy, will be floating nearby, urging you to keep up pace and cracking jokes to keep the fast-paced momentum of combat going. Since Jones has no head, I imagine the skull will be your navigation tool. Overall, this seems like a wholesome adventure, incorporating first-person shooting, a loot system, ship and crew management, and overall exploration of a truly, truly alluring world.
Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

Although we have a trailer and a Steam page for DAVY x JONES out now, we don’t quite have a release date for the final game. We can confirm, though, that the game will be releasing on PC and consoles. Whether that includes both last-gen and current-gen consoles remains unknown.
The same goes for the editions, which we’ll be keeping an eye out for any updates. On your front, you can always follow the official social handle to stay in the loop of any future announcements.
