Creepshow: Everything We Know

Stephen King’s ever-popular horror anthology Creepshow is tooling up to take the video game realm by storm, and it’s reportedly planning to bring all the same frights and features from its books, movies, and TV counterparts to a multitude of platforms at some point next year. Question is, what can we expect from such a large amount of data, and when can we expect to get our hands on the first of many, many episodes?

In case you missed it, the Indie Horror Showcase only recently shed light on numerous upcoming horror games, one of which was the aforementioned Creepshow—a love letter to Stephen King’s horror anthology of the same title that released way back in 1982. What Is Creepshow?

In case the episodic world of Stephen King’s Creepshow is somewhat alien to you, then just know this: the upcoming game will serve as an adaptation of both the TV, comic book, and movie series that originated back in 1982. The game, which will aim to emulate the tales and characters from all three series, will feature “cross gameplay genres and tones”—suggesting that the final product will include several different modes, stories, and designs. Simply put, it’ll be an all-in-one banquet of King’s greatest literary exploits across the eighties.

For those of you who’ve yet to brush up on the history of the series, Creepshow is a five-issue anthology of short stories written by Stephen King in 1982. Since then, the graphic novella has been ported into a movie, as well as a TV series, both of which contain the same stories written by the esteemed author.

Story

Providing DreadXP uses the entire library of literary works by Stephen King, then there’s a strong chance that the game will feature all five of the stories showcased in the 1982 graphic novella. To break it down, those stories are “Father's Day,” “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill,” “Something to Tide You Over,” “The Crate,” and “They're Creeping Up on You.”

As it currently stands, we don’t know exactly how long each of the above stories will be, let alone the mechanics or features each one will adopt. Whatever the case, here’s hoping that DreadXP will lift the veil on all the details over the next several weeks.

Gameplay

Unfortunately, this is where things go a little awry. As it stands, we don’t actually know what the gameplay will be like in DreadXP’s upcoming adaptation. That said, the developer did go on to say during the initial press release that it would feature a mixture of genres and styles — so there’s a good chance that, where one story might be experienced from a first-person perspective, another could very well be a top-down puzzle-solving mini-game. The jury is out on that one, though, so we can’t really say for certain. Yet.

Development

DreadXP, the creators behind the likes of My Friendly Neighborhood, first announced its plans to bring the Stephen King mini-series to consoles and PC during the Indie Horror Showcase, an event that brings all the latest up-and-coming projects together for a ninety-minute showcase. According to the devs, the game will be launching at some point in 2024, and across a variety of platforms, to add. As for what these platforms will be, however, remains anybody’s guess.

In the words of the creator, Creepshow will feature the talents of “renowned independent video game developers”, which will include the likes of Brian Clarke, who brought life to The Mortuary Assistant. If all goes according to plan, then we could, in theory, receive a new update on the game’s progress before year’s end.

In light of the previously mentioned details being a little barebones, we do at least have a piece of footage to tide you over for all the while the devs cross the t’s and dot the i’s. Granted, it isn’t much, and it doesn’t exactly shed a great deal of light on the gameplay aspects, either. Release Date, Platforms & Editions

At the time of writing, DreadXP has only suggested that the game will be coming out in 2024, and across a myriad of platforms. Knowing this, we can definitely expect to see it arrive on the likes of Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. However, until the devs decide to shed light on the matter in a future update, we’re pretty much left to speculate at this moment in time.

As far as launch editions go, DreadXP has only touched base on the one, which is the standard copy. Unfortunately, we don’t know whether it’ll be digital-only, or whether there’ll be a physical release, too. Either way, we can definitely expect to catch a glimpse of the post-launch versions over then next several months.
