Autopsy Simulator: Everything We Know
Given the fact that there is, oddly enough, a simulator that allows you to shimmy a slice of bread across a kitchen floor, or roll a fish through a nightclub in a bucket of vomit, it comes as no surprise that there’s also an Autopsy Simulator. It’s the natural course of evolution for the genre, and so, to be able to dissect a corpse seems like, you know, the best route forward. And to think, virtually power washing someone’s front porch used to be considered an unusual activity. Go figure.
Autopsy Simulator isn’t due out for a short while yet, but if you are keen to learn more about the art of pathology and the tricks of the trade, then be sure to read on for all the latest updates. Here’s everything we can tell you about Woodland Games’ upcoming “first-person horror-sim hybrid” for PC.
What Is Autopsy Simulator?

To point out the obvious, Autopsy Simulator is a first-person “story-driven” horror game in which players assume control over a trained pathologist. In the game, players will be invited to participate in a series of post-mortem examinations—trials in which participants will need to uncover the causes of death, and use an arsenal of tools to conduct research in order to draft their final reports.
According to the devs, the game will feature two modes: Dead Memories, which will serve as the game’s “story” mode, and Autopsy Only, which will allow players to conduct their own experiments and explore the rather dark secrets behind pathology. In other words, Autopsy Simulator will grant its players the opportunity to gaze beyond the curtain, which means, if you’ve been yearning to see “that” side of the door, then you’ll be able to have your fill — and then some.
Story

It seems that Autopsy Simulator won’t squash itself down into a typical nonlinear sandbox mode, but will instead opt for a full-blown story-driven campaign. Aptly titled Dead Memories, the featured story mode will allow players to step into the shoes of a middle-aged pathologist who, in the wake of their dearly beloved’s demise, discovers a “relic” within the body of a deceased patient. From the sounds of it, this one particular relic will serve as a key to a web of dark and gruesome events—a timeline that you, armed with several years of experience, will need to unravel.
“In Autopsy Simulator: Dead Memories, you play a middle-aged pathologist whose life has taken a turn for the worse. After a career downfall and the loss of your beloved wife, you live each day shattered and exhausted. One day during a routine post-mortem, you find a relic of your past hidden inside a body. Now, it feels like something just won’t let go…” Color us intrigued.
Gameplay

If you had high hopes of delving into the beating (or simply lack of) heart of a love letter to Surgeon Simulator, then you might be in for a bit of a shock. No, this isn’t your typical spiritual successor, as such, but something slightly more morbid and, unsurprisingly, less humorous than that. Sure enough, it’s Autopsy Simulator, which means the bulk of the gameplay will revolve around molding over corpses with a scalpel and a pair of pliers, and decoding the cause of death over a series of lifelike examinations.
“Each case is designed with the help of real life pathomorphologists and forensic doctors, ensuring the feel of being involved in an authentic autopsy process,” explains Woodland Games. “In-game bodies, organs and injuries are crafted with unprecedented attention to detail. While this makes it easy to create immersion, it’s also not for the faint hearted.” In other words, if you’re even the slightest bit squeamish when it comes to gore and morbid curiosities, then you might want to consider an alternative way to get your kicks.

Woodland Games has been working tirelessly to improve its pathology-centric simulation game for the past three or so years now, with its initial announcement coming to light back in November 2020.
“A lot of solid work is behind us, but it’s not time for a coffee break yet,” Woodland Games wrote in an update dated August 30, 2023. “We don’t stop and keep on creating next chapters, bodies and mechanics to make the game that will be somewhat scary, sometimes disgusting, but definitely a unique experience.”
According to a recent blog post, the creators are currently “preparing for the stage of polishing the game.” In other words, Autopsy Simulator is nearing completion, which means, with any luck, we’ll be seeing the final product at some point in early 2024.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Autopsy Simulator will be launching on PC via Steam at some point in 2024. As for when in 2024 it’ll release is still anybody’s guess. With that said, from the sounds of the developer logs, it’ll be shaping up for an early Q2 2024 launch. Don’t quote us on that, though.
At this moment in time, it’s hard to say whether or not the game will launch on consoles, as Woodland Games has only teased a PC version. If there is an Xbox or PlayStation port in the works, then the devs are likely to shed light on the matter at some point over the course of 2024. Until then, you can go ahead and add the standard copy to your wishlist on Steam here.
