The Lords of the Fallen: Everything We Know

Gamescom is the fulcrum of game releases. Every year, producers, developers, and enthusiasts gather for the exciting news that causes a stir in the gaming industry. This year, Gamescom was brimming with surprises for new releases we should expect next year. Making it to the lists of upcoming titles in 2023 is CI Games' Soulslike action RPG, The Lords of the Fallen. As a sequel to the original Lords of the Fallen, it is about time fans of the franchise get more exciting action into the vivacious dark medieval action. As a reboot of the original game, the upcoming game will also bear the title Lords of the Fallen.

Undeniably, the journey to Lord of the Fallen's release has been a trying one. With developers announcing its first release in 2017 and later having a fallout with collaborators, the game's development has had its fair share of troubles. This led to the developers viewing it as a successor rather than a sequel to the original title. Notwithstanding, we know the game will be a magnanimous upgrade and worth looking out for if it launches. So here’s what we know so far about The Lords fo the Fallen

What is The Lords of The Fallen?

The Lords of the Fallen: Everything We Know

The Lords of the Fallen is the upcoming sequel to 2014's The Lords of the Fallen. In the original title, players take control of Harkyn on a quest to stop powerful deities from invading the world. Hakryn is no angel. In fact, he is the epitome of wrong deeds in the sin-forbidden world. However, he plays as the main protagonist with rune labeling of his sins on his face.

The game switches from a power fantasy to a dark fantasy in the upcoming sequel. Moreover, it takes place in a more expansive, open, and interconnected dual world. Here, players can navigate both the realms of the dead and the living. Furthermore, the developers hint that the Soulslike RPG will be five times larger than the original and feature a compelling storyline.

Story

Taking place 1000 years after the original game, Adyr is finally defeated, ending a long-running cruel tyranny. However, as the trailer puts it, “gods do not fall forever.” This line hints at the return of the nefarious crusader, Adyr. Despite the war champions coming together and beginning an eternal watch over Adyr's remains, it is said that some forces are more powerful than death. This, we speculate, could be the onset of Adry's return. After evil corrupts the land and influences all sworn enemies to join a pact as lords of the fallen, a dark reign precedes the land with the aim of damming humanity once and for all.

However, with every count of evil, good always shows up in the fight. The trailer showcases a new faceless crusader with barbed wire on their helm, wielding a sword and lantern as their arsenal. The lantern bears some siphoning power, which, when placed on an enemy's chest, draws out the might of foes, making them vulnerable to the crusader's blade. The lantern also appears to hold revival powers, whereby the crusader is brought back to life by its glowing sapphire luminance.

Moreover, a voiceover that sounds like a prayer to the god Orius accompanies the hero knight on his treacherous journey.

Gameplay

The Lords of the Fallen

The title will feature a vivid, soul-like experience, which is not a first for the franchise. Although the trailer doesn't detail much about the upcoming title's gameplay, it does give a glimpse of the intense action fans should expect in 2023.

The split dual world will play a vital role in the game. Players have to explore the realms of the dead and the living to complete various objectives. The lantern will be critical in crossing between the worlds and locating forgotten places. Also, the lantern can help players find lost treasures and manipulate enemies.

Furthermore, the game will be powered by Unreal Engine 5 and feature online co-op gameplay. Regarding armory, the game has an expansive roster of 100 weapons for launching various attacks.

Also, there are options for character customization where a player can choose from nine character classes. We assume that the new title will borrow the classes from the original game, including Outlaw, Raider, Rogue, Brawler, Warrior, Cleric, Paladin, Executioner, and Ranger.

The Lords of the Fallen - Announcement Trailer | PS5 Games

The first look into The Lords of the Fallen was announced during the Gamescom Awards 2022. A 2-minute 53-second cinematic trailer narrated by Joseph Quinn from Stranger Things gives a glimpse of the game's dark fantasy and foreshadowing backdrop. We also get to see some of the grotesque faces of the monsters.

The trailer's highlight was the inclusion of Danzig's heavy metal title, “Mother,” which complemented the gruesome battle action. The trailer also showcases the type of combat we should expect, including heals, blocks, melee attacks, and magic buffs.

The Lords of the Fallen Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

The announcement trailer for  Lords of the Fallen didn't give fans an exact date for when the game will drop. However, according to the title's Steam page, it should release sometime in 2023. With the developers launching the trailer late in the year, it's only safe to assume the game will drop much later in 2023, probably toward the end of the fourth quarter.

The game will be available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. Although the game is not open for preorders, you can add it to your wishlist on your shopfront of choice.

Despite the various wrangles CI Games has been through during game development, we hope there are no more hurdles in the game's release.
