The Behemoth Talks BEHEMOTH – Interview Series

Castle Crashers developer The Behemoth has just launched its latest “dodge n’ flap” arcade extravaganza, BEHEMOTH, on Steam—a project that reportedly serves as a testament to the studio’s twenty-one year anniversary milestone.

Curious to learn more about the latest installment in the team’s ever-evolving catalog, I decided to reach out to one of the marketing “chickens” at The Behemoth, Amanda.

Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to speak with us today. Before we tuck into BEHEMOTH, mind if we ask you a little bit about yourself and the studio? How did it all start for you, and what brought you to The Behemoth?

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to write about The Behemoth! I’m Amanda, one of two marketing and community chickens on the team. I’ve been obsessed with gaming since I was younger and have some previous experience in marketing. I never thought I could break into the gaming industry since I’m from the Midwest, but I decided to apply for this position in San Diego a couple years back. Since being hired, I’ve worked with the team to ship Alien Hominid Invasion, Alien Hominid HD, and BEHEMOTH!

We’re sensing undertones of Flappy Bird meets We Love Katamari from your upcoming side-scrolling “dodge n’ flap” game, BEHEMOTH. Are we in the right ballpark here, or have we completely missed the mark? Either way, we would love to hear more about it. For starters, there’s the concept of bird-meets-wrecking ball. Please could you tell us more about how this idea came into play?

The Behemoth turned 21 this year, and BEHEMOTH is a testament and celebration of that milestone! We’ve been working on a bunch of other projects but had an idea to create this for the community that has survived and flapped along with us these past 21 years – we couldn’t have done it without them! Our studio is also heavily influenced by arcade games, and we bring homemade arcade cabinets for all of our games to conventions like PAX East. We’ve wanted to create a new single-player challenge for the shows, so everything fell into place at the right time for BEHEMOTH.

Let’s talk about the world in which BEHEMOTH takes place. What can we expect to unearth in this vibrant and seemingly destructible universe?

The chicken is still trying to figure out more about this parallel universe they’ve been flung into… There are so many baby chicks falling from the sky, peck-uliarly large fruits flying through the air, and colorful skyscapes to discover! But is it a world, really??? Seems like a lot of luscious sky to me…

BEHEMOTH 🥚 Announcement & Release Date Trailer

We’re real suckers for a few tips and tricks. Do you have any words of advice for those who are looking to evolve their flock and boost their score?

The more baby chicks you save, the higher your score! Holding onto as many as you can as early as possible is scary since you’ll have a lot to potentially lose, but it’s the best way to get a highscore. You can also break some eggs to hatch baby chicks worth more points than those falling from the sky. Without any additional context, celery will be your best friend. We love celery AND candy corn!

The Behemoth Roadmap stream shed light on a fantastic selection of projects and updates. Mind giving us a quick recap of what you revealed during the summer event?

We used an animated trailer to help announce our Behemoth Roadmap to the community! The video follows a chicken stuck in traffic and the chaos that ensues, all while showing what we’ve been working on lately. We revealed planned updates for all of our titles, including the Castle Crashers Painter Boss Paradise DLC, a PlayStation port for Alien Hominid HD and Alien Hominid Invasion, Pit People’s Update 8, and a quality of life update for BattleBlock Theater (which is in preparation for the game’s modern console release). Near the end of the animation, the chicken stuck in traffic is flung up into the sky, revealing a hint for Game 6, now titled BEHEMOTH.

We’re eager to learn more about the upcoming DLC for Castle Crashers, tooPlease could you tell us about Painter Boss Paradise?

The Castle Crashers Painter Boss Paradise DLC will bring Steam Workshop capabilities to the game for the first time ever, in addition to a brand-new official character, Paint Junior! There will also be a new “fresh coat of paint” for all official characters, and players will be able to toggle the DLC on and off if they prefer the old knight designs. We’re also taking this time to fix some old bugs and tweak a few features to make Castle Crashers a more enjoyable experience for all!

Between BEHEMOTH and the Painter Boss Paradise DLC for Castle Crashers, it appears that there’s a lot to keep tabs on. Mind if we ask where we might be able to source some more information on the upcoming projects?

We use all the major social media platforms, but subscribing to our YouTube channel and our email newsletter are probably the best places to stay in touch.

Is there anything you would like to add anything for our readers?

B-bawk?

Thanks for your time, Amanda!
