Splinter Cell VR Has Been Canceled

Updated on

After two years of silence, Ubisoft has finally pulled the plug on Oculus' Splinter Cell VR.

Originally coined for a 2022 release on Oculus Quest, Splinter Cell VR was set to keep the stealth franchise alive and kicking. Unfortunately, its movement was rather short-lived, as Ubisoft pretty much kept its details under wraps for the two years it was kept in development. Now, it seems as though the game will never even see the light of day, as Ubisoft has officially pulled the plug on it.

This comes as no surprise for most, as the game's plot, gameplay, or characters were never actually revealed. In our eyes, it was Ubisoft's shadow-dweller, which just so happened to run alongside another Splinter Cell title in the works. However, after a sudden turn of events, it appeared one was favored over the other.

So, what actually happened? What was the final nail in the coffin for Splinter Cell VR? Well, that's just it. Ubisoft didn't really give a great deal away, though its cancelation is believed to be tied to some sort of financial issues. Perhaps it isn't the case of funding the project, but flipping a profit post-launch. It's hard to say, and it's definitely a question for the ages.

Splinter Cell VR was set to launch on Oculus Quest.

Sam Fisher: Down But Not Out

Of course, the consolation prize here is the fact that Ubisoft Toronto is still working on a remake for the first Splinter Cell game. This was announced just last year, and is still expected to launch in the near future. And so, although one flame has extinguished, another has most definitely risen from the ashes. Take from that what you will.

You can follow Ubisoft for more updates on the Splinter Cell series here.

So, what's your take? Are you disappointed to see Splinter Cell VR drop out of the running? Will you be picking up the remake? Let us know over on our socials here or down in the comments below.
