Dancing Pandas: Ranger’s Path Review (PC)

There’s something awfully therapeutic about chopping up bamboo with a makeshift pickaxe whilst the sun sinks beyond the skyline of an idyllic woodland grotto. It doesn’t matter if your to-do list is longer than a sloth’s slender legs, because when the locals are so inviting and friendly, time, thankfully, isn’t a factor that you need to levy. And that’s really what Dancing Pandas: Ranger’s Path is all about: setting aside the hourglass to take advantage of the simpler things, like digging for gleaming scallops, carving for diamonds, or building bridges to help the locals rekindle former settlements.

It doesn’t take much to figure out where Dancing Pandas found its inspiration; it’s so on the nose, in fact, that you could quite easily replace its pudgy pandas with a Disney Princess or two and it would essentially become a love letter to Disney Dreamlight Valley. With a graphical interface that strikes the same tone as Dreamlight and a collective of eccentric characters, fetch quests, and pocketfuls of mining, crafting, and farming exploits, you could mistake it for being a textbook ode to the aforementioned IP. But, I’m not about to dock points for that; imitation is the sincerest form of flattery — and all that jazz.

Dancing Pandas: Ranger’s Path is a lot of things; it’s a reminder that wildlife conservation is of utmost importance; it’s a prompt to frequently take the route less traveled for the sake of preserving the harmonic balance of life; and it’s a fruitful depository of spirit, goodness, and all things wholesome. Suffice it to say, then, that it’s a game that will surely resonate with a lot of fans of the simpler things in life. But, it seems that I’m getting ahead of myself with this, so allow me to rewind it back to the beginning.

Simpler Times

Dancing Pandas: Ranger’s Path commences its introductory chapter with a familiar sequence of traditional, albeit universally inflexible stepping stone procedures: panda receives letter from grandparent; the panda ventures out to find said grandparent on a fruitful journey of self-discovery; and the panda, in an attempt to breathe life into the so-called Summer Island, adopts the position of a local ranger to help bridge the gaps between the village and the wilderness — etcetera, etcetera. This is, to some extent, the breadth of the journey that you embark upon: finding a place to call home amongst the beloved pandas of the tropical island, and using a selection of tools and special skills to aid others in their quests and other activities. Granted, there’s more to it than that, but for the most part, your story is about the revival of the island, and the modifications one must make to elevate its foundations.

Dancing Pandas: Ranger’s Path invites you to board a vessel and openly explore Summer Island in a number of ways, whether it’s by interacting with other pandas and helping them to complete small but consequential projects, developing your Courage level—a separate meter that requires you to go beyond your usual duties to establish your character and prove your commitment to the role of Master Ranger—or mining for diamonds to exchange for other perks and useful tools to further expand the community. Naturally, all of this comes packaged in a family-friendly, forgiving capsule that, quite simply, could be approached by anyone, regardless of skill or history in the field of agricultural production.

Bells, Whistles, and Embellishments

Courage Level (Dancing Pandas: Ranger’s Path)

There’s no denying the fact that Dancing Pandas is an instinctively adorable game. In addition to its candy-popping theme and tropical ambiance, it also brings a lot of happy-go-lucky personalities and witty humor to the table—two things that you can mold into fruitful conversations and everlasting friendships. The story side of things isn’t anything short of average, but it’s rather easy to overlook a lot of those shortcomings when there’s an equal amount of fantastic content to pluck out from the woodwork, like the Courage system and the explorative work, for example. And just to reiterate, it isn’t your bog-standard, explosive ARPG; it doesn’t make a habit out of manifesting ludicrously tough action-oriented combat encounters or bitterly cruel challenges for you to overcome. There are a few pandas, and—surprise surprise—there are button prompts. It’s as simple as that.

I was pleasantly surprised, to be honest, at just how much fun I was able to have with sifting through a few generic tasks and exploring the picturesque boroughs of the emerald forests of Summer Island. It was one of those sorts of experiences—the type you’d naturally unwind to after a long and grueling day at the office. With little to no steep learning curves to tackle or complex systems to onboard, it almost felt like second nature, or perhaps even a natural homecoming for the mind.

Verdict

Dockyard on Summer Island (Dancing Pandas: Ranger’s Path)

I’m all for the idea of giving Dancing Pandas a hearty standing ovation for its kindhearted theme and natural inclusion of a striking locale with oh-so many tropical set pieces. It’s certainly a game that you can easily fall in love with, even if, say, it does lean on a lot of ideas that have been rinsed and tossed around like a piece of gem lettuce in a wooden salad bowl. To say that it’s a unique experience wouldn’t be true; aside from the fact that it uses pandas to generate its world, it doesn’t go anywhere that others of its ilk have been before. But that isn’t a major issue, for it does manage to grease the wheels with a lot of gleeful energy and great qualities. Simply put, it isn’t an original idea — but it works, and that’s often all that matters.

It doesn’t take much to persuade like-minded fans of the crafting-farming movement to plant roots in an alternate universe, that’s for sure. And it’s because of this that, if you, too, share that undying passion for agriculture and gentle, forgiving, and above all, stress-free chore core work, then chances are you’ll find it incredibly easy to plant a few seeds on Summer Island and watch the world flourish. It’s unlikely that you’ll find it to be the perfect vacation, but if you’re easily able to find small bursts of joy in liminal tasks, you might as well take the plunge and spend a few hours with these homegrown pandas.

A Passport to Panda Paradise

While Dancing Pandas: Ranger’s Path isn’t the most complex game in the world, it does manage to elevate the “feel good” factor with a glorious amount of Asian-inspired locales, bubbling and eccentric characters, and a wholesome storyline with a lot of lovable moments.
