Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom — Everything We Know

Maze Theory will be bringing out a new video game, by order of the Peaky Blinders. Question is, what is said game, and when can we expect to see it hit consoles and PC? Well, that's the thing, you see — it's coming out on March 9, 2023, which means, at the time of writing, only a week or so remains before it drops on Meta Quest 2 and PICO.

So, what else do you need to know about the nitty-gritty Birmingham-based VR game? Blinders fans unite — here's everything you will need to take into account before running alongside the notorious Shelby's at their own game in The King's Ransom.

What Is Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom?

Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom is an upcoming VR game by Maze Theory. In said game, you fill the boots of a runaway vigilante who's spent over a decade fleeing from the firing squad. In a bid to turn the tide against your enemies, you will seek refuge within the Peaky Blinders' flourishing network, a criminal underworld in which opportunities to utilize Tommy Shelby's connections and tools come to those who are most loyal to the cause.

“Explore the gritty streets of 1920s Birmingham and London, and immerse yourself in iconic locations from the show, including The Garrison Tavern, Charlie’s Yard and the Shelbys' Betting Shop,” the official description adds.

Story

The King's Ransom will place you in the year of 1928, a time that, going by the universally acclaimed BBC drama, technically slots you somewhere between seasons four and five. The story, which will be based between both Birmingham and London, will see you taking shelter from the firing squad after being on the run for over a decade. As a newly appointed member of the infamous Peaky Blinders, you will immerse in a crime-riddled underworld where every citizen has a motive, and every action has a consequence.

“It’s 1928, and you’ve been fleeing the firing squad for over a decade,” the blurb reads in part. “Turning to infamous crime boss Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) for help, you become embroiled in the hunt for Winston Churchill’s Red Box: a briefcase containing the identities of every British agent around the globe.”

“As you're drawn deeper into England’s criminal underworld, you find yourself at war once again. Enemy factions are closing in, and they all want the box: for power, for money, and the chance to bring the country to its knees. Keep your wits about you as simmering tensions explode into intense action, defeat the odds and bring back the box… BY ORDER OF THE PEAKY BLINDERS!”

Gameplay

In a typical VR fashion, Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom will mostly revolve around high-octane gunplay, immersive cinematics, and intense QTEs. Between back alley brawls and gunfights, a lot of the gameplay will also include confronting and engaging in conversations with some of Peaky Blinders' most notorious criminals—Tommy Shelby, Arthur, and Polly Gray, to name but a few.

Of course, a lot of key details are still under wraps, as they probably will be until the game finally comes out on March 9th. From what we've already caught, though, it looks as if The King's Ransom will take a lot of its inspiration from games like Blood & Truth, L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files, and perhaps Rush of Blood, an on-rails shooter.

Development

Maze Theory, a subsidiary of Emergent Entertainment, is a studio best known for its long arm of VR-based works—a portfolio that includes games such as Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, The Lonely Assassins, The Edge of Reality, and ENGRAM. Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom will serve as the first VR adaptation of the highly successful BBC drama that has been on air since 2013.

Announced back in February 2022, The King's Ransom has since received a slew of new updates, including but not limited to a pre-launch trailer that released in February 2023. At the time of writing, Maze Theory is planning to release the game on Meta Quest 2 and PICO 4 on March 9, 2023. It hasn't been said yet whether or not it will be broadening its horizons and planting roots on other VR platforms yet.

If by now you're hooked on the thought of venturing deep into Peaky Blinders territory, then you're also likely to be wanting a trailer of some sort to help whet the appetite. The good news there, of course, is that Maze Theory has indeed taken the opportunity to shed light on the game by bringing one to the table. You can see it for yourself in the video above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom will be coming to Meta Quest 2 and PICO 4 on March 9, 2023. Will it be branching out to PlayStation VR or any other headsets in the future? It's hard to say at this point, though at the time of writing it clearly isn't at the top of Maze Theory's to-do list. Don't lose all hope though, as VR games do tend to gravitate towards other platforms in the months, and oftentimes years after their initial launch dates.

As it stands, there won't be any special editions outside of its standard Meta Quest 2 and PICO 4 versions. Not an issue? You can add it to your Meta Quest wishlist by visiting the link here.
