Side-scrolling adventure game lovers are in for a whole new experience with Detective Dotson. It’s one of the latest titles on the video game scene and the first from its developer. But one thing about this game is how it proves the dynamic and limitless nature of creators’ imagination. Already nicknamed as “A Love Letter for India,” the title focuses on the modern Indian city and its culture. 

It’s a successful attempt by a team of creatives to bring India onto the video games scene and provide a break from Western domination. Everything about Detective Dotson looks and feels amazing. From the visuals to the core gameplay and soundtrack, anyone will quickly fall in love with the game and keep tabs on the promised DLC. For now, here is everything we know about Detective Dotson. 

What is Detective Dotson?

Immerse yourself in the vibrant and colorful streets of India for the first time in Detective Dotson. Created by Masala Games, Detective Dotson is a mystery adventure game set in modern India. It’s a creation inspired by the fact that India has been missing from the video game culture, prompting the developers to come up with the title, their first game. According to the founder and CEO of the development company, Detective Dotson is a celebration of the funny, beautiful, and ever-adventurous homeland of India. 

Story

Detective Dotson’s story follows the main protagonist, an actor-cum detective. It was never Dotson’s wish to become a detective. He had a passion for acting, desiring to be an actor in Bollywood. He was pretty good with costumes. However, following the mysterious death of his father, Dotson must play along and uncover the mystery behind every case. Who killed Dotson Sr? Dotson buries his Bollywood dream and dives into detective work with four cases to solve with enthusiasm rather than expertise. His first mission is to solve the mystery of a missing dog, Papadam. As his first assignment, the investigation serves as an introduction to Dotcity, its cultural touchpoints, and quirky characters. 

Gameplay

Like anyone would guess, Detective Dotson’s gameplay is all about investigation. After the initial investigation into the missing dog, Dotson gathers clues that lead him to the four cases that comprise the gameplay. The four cases are all interconnected and only become more complex and personal as you progress. But the adventure through Dotcity isn’t your ordinary boring detective work. 

First, you will enjoy the vibrant city where everything is simply charming. From the cast of characters, like the Nosy Aunty, with a remarkable network of gossip. Dr Rangeela boasts a lab that’s evidently drawn from the 90s but with an unbelievable tech-savviness. And at the center of it all is a perfect blend of point-and-click adventure, platforming gameplay elements, and mini-games. 

Engage in all the detective work, including gathering evidence, interrogating suspects, and following up on leads. Blend the western detective style with your cultural touch. Rather than taking the suspect’s fingerprints or conducting DNA tests, analyze the mix of spices in the suspect’s kitchen. You can also try to understand the patterns outside their homesteads. You’re armed with an evidence board where you will try to piece together the clues, motives, and suspects. 

Traverse the sprawling city and watch it unfold in a side-scrolling world, hold conversations in dialogue trees, complete the mini-games, and bargain through every transaction. Whether you’re grabbing a meal on the streets or exchanging some coins for information, you have a bargaining system that works. The non-player characters have varying bargaining patterns you will need to know. 

Utilize the disguise system to infiltrate gatherings and gather intelligence. Also delightful is the “Sadhu” robe, which grants you supernatural mind-reading powers. The mini-games, such as cricket, the paper scraps that need to be pieced together for clues, and hidden objects, will help you earn money to exchange for successful bargains. 

Development

Designed by developers as a game that celebrates India’s vibrancy and culture, Detective Dotson is now popular as a love letter to the country. The game is designed as a side-scrolling puzzle adventure video game with a hybrid visual style. 2D pixel art characters dwelling in 3D environments. That blend of visuals oozes innovation and evokes a nostalgic feeling. It’s a pretty immersive game that incorporates exciting elements from the mini-games, which feel like they could support an entirely independent spin-off, as well as gameplay mechanics like the disguise and bargaining systems. 

Overall, the game’s narrative, visuals, and gameplay mechanics seamlessly interwove with the cultural aspect, delivering a unique and fulfilling experience that marked a first of its kind. The developers, Masala Games, did not reveal when the game’s development started, but fans can expect more from the game. A free DLC is already promised for June 2025 to expand on Detective Dotson’s story. The DLC will feature additional cases for Dotson to solve and extra mini-games. Additional console ports and couch co-op gameplay will also be released sometime later in the year. 

Trailer

The new game release came along with a launch trailer that starts with Detective Dotson sailing on a yacht. It’s a short trailer spanning about half a minute, but it effectively showcases a wide range of the game’s features, from the bustling city full of color to the pixel-art characters and the impressive 3D world. You can see a cast of characters dressed in Indian-culture attire, as well as the hotels offering various dishes that Dotson will be purchasing. The environment is highly decorated with flower shops and buildings featuring different floral patterns, as well as balloon and Indian pattern decorations. The trailer ends with Dotson playing cricket, one of the mini-games in Detective Dotson. 

Release Date & Platforms

Detective Dotson was initially released on April 24, 2025. Masala Games, which also develops the game, publishes it. The developers have released the game for PC, and they plan to launch it on other consoles at a later date to reach an even wider audience. It is part of the Xbox Development Acceleration program; however, you can currently play the game on Steam. The developers are preparing to release the game on the Microsoft Store soon.
