What is Death Note: Killer Within?

Death Note: Killer Within is a multi-player game, based on the famous Death Note anime and manga series. In this game, players are brought to a tight, dark place where everyone keeps secrets and has secret identities. Under the mysterious backdrop of suspense, Killer Within challenges players to not trust anyone and keep sharp eyes. Each player plays a separate game, thus giving each roll of the dice an amount of strategy and surprise. It promises a thrilling atmosphere where each decision counts and one wrong move may cost a quick game.

This game falls in the social deduction genre wherein players are in teams but will also have to figure out who among them may be secretly an enemy. In social deduction games, you are trying to figure out other players’ hidden roles while keeping yours safe. Players have to use observation, intuition, and sometimes bluffing in order to survive. The tension is high and so is the excitement, with no idea of who you can trust and whose friendship will shift at any time.

Story

Death Note: Killer Within is not a plot-driven game. Rather, it’s a social deduction game in which players develop their story in every playthrough. Two teams – the followers of Kira and L’s investigators – try to reach their goals. The suspense and drama comes with finding out who might be on your side and who’s concealing secrets. In every match, there is a battle of wits where deception and strategy form the experience.

Gameplay

This is an online social deduction game where players can be up to 10 in number and are divided into opposing teams, being either on Team Kira or Team L. Each team has its objectives and hidden identities, thus creating a tense game of deception. The mission of Team Kira is protecting Kira’s identity and eliminating L, while the mission of Team L is to find out who Kira is and possess the Death Note.

Every player is assigned a role out of four options: Kira, L, Investigator, or Kira Follower. If you are picked to be Kira, then you will start the game with the Death Note and can eliminate the other players, which simply means kill them if you know their real names. Be cautious, because if Team L catches you with the Death Note, your team loses.

The assigned player to L is a leader for the investigating team. L has specialized tools, the surveillance cameras and ensures to watch other players’ and try to figure out who is the secret Kira. When L is eliminated, Team L immediately loses automatically, hence staying safe is the imperative task. L relies on the Investigators for helping view the movements of other players and completing tasks bringing them closer to identifying Kira. Supporters of L take notes regarding suspicious behavior and conceal their identities. Investigators have to work to find clues, fulfill tasks and avoid Kira’s grasp.

Kira Followers is the sidekick of Kira, who assist in snatching IDs that can reveal actual names. This is what Kira needs to clear out L’s team. Kira Followers can also take away Death Note if Kira begins to gain attention. This keeps the profile of Kira low. Following this, the roles change for both teams, which makes each a new challenge.

Death Note: Killer Within is being developed by Grounding, Inc. and published by Bandai Namco. Known for its innovative approach, Grounding, Inc. captures the intense psychological battles from the Death Note series. Bandai Namco has extensive industry experience supporting ambitious visions, so here comes a game that promises depth and strategy in an atmosphere so authentic to Death Note.

Release Date, Platforms, and Editions

Death Note: Killer Within is set to be released on 5 November 2024, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. Cross-platform play will be available between the three systems.
