Would you follow your lover to hell when they are kidnapped and taken to the world of eternal punishment, knowing full well you might not come back from it? Kind of like jumping in front of a train for your lover, all easy to sing along to, but not quite easy to follow through.

You might not physically be forced to put your life on the line in Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival. But it sure will feel like it, delving deeper into a frightening and heart-pumping saga. Here’s everything we know about Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival so far.

What is Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival?

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival — Everything We Know

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival is an upcoming single-player, story-driven, first-person action survival horror game. You may have heard of it, the Hellraiser franchise. It’s a British-American horror series that spans beyond games to comic books and merchandise.

The series is based on the Hellbound Heart novella by English author Clive Barker. In the franchise, you follow the stories of the Cenobites, an extra-dimensional and presumed demonic species that includes the primary antagonist, Pinhead (the Hell Priest).

The new game, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival, won’t necessarily follow the stories you might have read before from the franchise. However, it’ll borrow the characters from the series and narrate a new chapter. You’ll use the powers of the Genesis Configuration puzzle box, which, based on the series, opens a gateway into the Hell-like realm where Cenobites reside.

Why would you put yourself through “hell,” you ask? Well, your lover happens to have been taken by the Cenobites, and the only way to get her back seems to be striking a bargain with the infamous Pinhead to go after her.

Story

In the bar

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival will take place in the legendary horror franchise, Hellraiser. So, fans can expect to play through familiar characters and environments. You’ll follow Aidan, who uses the powers of the Genesis Configuration, a mysterious puzzle box able to take you to a hell-like realm. And all in the name of saving your girlfriend, Sunny, escape from the otherworldly hellscape prison she’s been trapped in.

Levels will be a labyrinth of monster-ridden stages, which will take blunt force to kill the monstrous threats coming at you. You’ve made a bargain with Pinhead to head into the Cenobites’ realm. Now, it’s up to you to survive the onslaught of cult monstrosities looking to destroy you at every turn.

Gameplay

Puzzle

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival’s gameplay will first include unraveling a new story set in Hellraiser’s universe. You’ll wield the power of the puzzle box, which grants you unique and hellish abilities. You’ll wield varying earthly ranged and melee weapons that can break bones and pierce through the flesh of the enemies you encounter. These won’t be your everyday types of foes, either, with some deriving pleasure from the pain you subject them to. They are an unholy cult serving at the Cenobites’ feet. From infernal priests to ghastly monstrosities, you’ll smash and bash into all kinds of enemies across a story-driven, horror, survival playthrough.

Development

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival — Everything We Know

World-renowned Saber Interactive is working on developing and publishing Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival. They have released an announcement trailer, already looking immersive in the universe from the books and related media. Nenad Tomic, Executive Producer of the game, reveals that the upcoming title will dive deep into the Hellraiser rich mythos. He promises a “haunting, cinematic experience” fans will love from the big screen to consoles and PCs.

The franchise creator, Clive Barker, has also been involved in the ideation of the game. He’s influenced the visual style and storylines of the upcoming game, as well as the lore and character personalities. Thus, you can look forward to an authentic experience, mostly inspired by the first two Hellraiser films.

The juxtaposition between pain and pleasure has always been an interesting concept that the developers plan to explore. They will infuse a psychological factor of human desire into the game, an aspect I can’t wait to see come alive.

In Tim Willits, Chief Creative Officer at Saber Interactive’s words, “We are embracing everything that makes Hellraiser unforgettable and weaving it into an experience designed to leave you shocked, exhilarated, and, yes, just a little bit disturbed.”

Trailer

Check out Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival’s announcement trailer out now on YouTube. It sure does look good, with incredibly detailed and stunning character designs. Fans will definitely get goosebumps at the thought of playing solo through a nearly four-decade-old franchise.

Also exciting is that Doug Bradley is reprising his role as Pinhead, which you can listen to tidbits of his performance in the announcement trailer. His voice does sound deeper, but it’s still well appreciated in cementing Pinhead’s commanding presence.
