Poker Palace Reopens as Club Fortune North – But Without Poker or Table Games

The historic Poker Palace in North Las Vegas has reopened, with a new name and a new thematic gaming experience. Club Fortune North, as it is called now, will feature over 450 slots and a freshly designed casino floor space, but it has ditched the gaming tables and poker tables. A venue that is fondly described as a “locals casino”, the original Palace Poker was acquired by Truckee Gaming back in September 2025, and was closed for renovations.

Now, the casino delivers a very different experience for locals, a bold move that struck off the popular poker games and classic table games for slots. Truckee Gaming was clear in its message that Club Fortune North will remain a business for locals, with favorably low limits and none of the grand flashy Vegas Strip VIP experiences. The idea is to keep this as the type of casino where staff remembers guests, locals can come to blow off steam and play, and instead of targeting hordes of international tourists, it is made with Las Vegas residents in mind. But how will this new concept gel with locals?

Grand Launch of the Club Fortune North

Club Fortune North opened its doors on July 22, throwing out all those early bird bonuses and promotions to hype up its launch. Only this is not a mega resort or a bustling downtown Fremont Street Vegas casino. It is a much smaller scale venue, designed for locals, and has roots that trace back to 1951. Club Fortune North, owned by Truckee Gaming, a company that has 10 US casinos for locals around Sparks, Henderson, Silver Springs, and Dayton, among other quieter areas in Vegas.

After nearly a year of renovations, starting in September and ending in July, Club Fortune North brandishes a fresh design for its guests. The property has over 450 new slot machines, including cult classics such as Kong Skill Island, Buffalo Ultimate Stampede, and Wheel of Fortune Cash on Reels. These mostly include games from bigger name game providers, like Aristocrat Gaming and IGT. Besides new cabinets, Club Fortune North also has a sportsbook, with its betting tech and odds provided by Boomer’s Sportsbook – a newer, indie sportsbook that is based in Vegas.

The dining experiences are all new, there is an extended bar area, and Club Fortune North is part of a modernized rewards program for returning guests. The only things that are lacking from this cosy gambling den are poker games, blackjack, roulette, craps, baccarat, and other live table games, which have seemingly all been abandoned in favor of slot machines.

Historic Poker Palace Casino

These were some of the draws of the original Poker Palace, which was originally launched back in 1955 but took on the name Poker Palace in 1980. A true locals venue, Poker Palace was known for its affordable poker tournaments, bingo hall, blackjack games, and a smaller sportsbook, with horse racing bets and traditional sports bets.

In a 2008 review in the Las Vegas Sun, writer Jeff Haney described it as:

 “An extremely low-limit locals joint. We do mean locals. If you’re a tourist and you end up here, you’re probably very, very lost.”

These types of Vegas gaming joints are really not designed for the flocks of international and domestic gaming tourists at all. Instead of VIP experiences, spas and shopping, and progressive jackpots that make millionaires in the blink of an eye, they feature games for their target audience. Casino diners with affordable food, dealers who recognize returning guests, and quieter casino floor space, that is not overly packed with the typical Vegas crowds.

Local Casino Experience

The big money for operators and the state (through taxes) definitely comes from the downtown or Las Vegas Strip Casinos. The gaming makes up a significant portion of this, but then there are all the other casino resort luxuries to take into account. You can’t have a big Vegas, or even Atlantic City or Macau casino resort without the following:

• Shopping and retail
• Wellness and spa facilities
• Restaurants and celebrity chef diners
• Event centers and concerts
• Premium hotel suites and accommodation

The list goes on. You can forget all of those with the local casinos. Instead these have affordable eateries, free parking, located in convenient spots, and none of the golf courses, wall-to-wall sportsbook displays or high-end boutique shops that you can find on the Strip.

Similar Local Venues

Instead of Caesars, MGM Resorts, Wynn, Genting Group, and other mega players in the Vegas industry, the operators of the localized Vegas Casinos are far smaller. There are still a few family-run businesses, smaller franchises, and even some overlap with the Vegas Strip operators, who also run a few localized casinos or casino brands.

• Golden Entertainment (GDEN ): Run by the Sartini Family, this company owns several casinos, taverns and a few bigger venues – like the Strat Tower on the Vegas Strip

Are Slots Replacing Traditional Card Games?

Relaunching the historic Poker Palace with no poker games was a bold move from Truckee Gaming, but they did the same thing with their Henderson venue, Club Fortune. The more frequent gamers among the locals may have noticed that this is not an isolated scenario, but part of a slow trend in Vegas’ small economy gaming market.

It is no secret that slots make up the bulk of the gaming revenue at larger casino resorts, and that these are the games that bring in the biggest crowds. And so, for smaller operators, where casino floor space is not available in abundance and they have to optimize the spatial arrangements, gaming machines provide a very good alternative.

That is to say, it is not really so much a move from blackjack or baccarat to slots, but a move from bulky table fittings to sleek cabinets. Of which there can be multi-game cabinets, that support slots, video poker, various bingo, and even casino poker games like Ultimate Texas Hold’em (where you play against the dealer, not other players).

Off-Strip Poker Rooms and Card Game Sector

But even if they can remove the playing cards, gaming chips, tables and the dealers in favor of these all-in-one machines, saving space and operational costs, it will never match the same ambiance as the real thing. There are poker rooms in Nevada, but it is not the same type of industry, as say, California. Just next door, in California, card rooms are a massive hit with locals, as they provide blackjack style and other table games, all with the full table setup, local atmosphere, and dealers. Well, player-dealers that is, as gambling is illegal throughout California except for in tribal casinos, and while there was a lengthy lawsuit against card rooms in the state, the courts eventually determined that these run legally, and allowed card rooms to continue in California.

Back to Nevada, card rooms are good alternatives, but they aren’t as common. And in increasingly difficult economic times, the onus falls on operators to think forward. Cutting costs, optimizing floor space, and designing more catered experiences for specific target audiences. Club Fortune North’s owners are following the trend of ditching card games for slot cabinets. It joins many other local venues that have done the same, but it remains to be seen whether this tactic actually will pay off, or whether the locals will expect more from the venue formerly named Poker Palace.
