NEOGEO AES+ Delayed to September 2027 as PLAION Cites Memory-Chip Supply

PLAION REPLAI said in a September 9, 2026 press release that the worldwide release date for its NEOGEO AES+ console range will move to September 16, 2027, abandoning the previously planned November launch after what the company described as industry-wide supply constraints on memory chips.

The NEOGEO AES+ products are independently developed and published by PLAION REPLAI under license from SNK, and the range remains available for pre-order through participating retailers worldwide and the company’s own online store.

According to the company, unprecedented worldwide demand for memory chips, driven by spending on AI infrastructure, has created well documented supply constraints across the industry. Rather than proceed with the November launch with severely constrained worldwide availability, PLAION REPLAI said it chose to take additional time to secure the component supply needed to meet demand from pre-order customers and to support a substantially larger worldwide release. The added time will also be used to secure the manufacturing capacity required to support the platform over the long term, the company said.

The decision follows what PLAION REPLAI called an extraordinary response to the NEOGEO AES+ announcement earlier this year, with demand from fans, collectors and retail partners prompting the company to expand manufacturing, increase investment in the platform and broaden its long-term software roadmap.

Pre-Orders Keep Priority and Gain a Bonus

Existing pre-orders remain secure and retain their priority place in the production queue, with no action required from customers, the company said. PLAION REPLAI apologised for what it called a significant delay, committed to launching at the announced prices with no planned increases despite continued pressure on global component supply, and said future production will be allocated sequentially as manufacturing capacity expands.

Every console from the launch production run will include a Founding Supporter Bonus, which the company said will be limited to launch stock while supplies last and will not return in future manufacturing runs. Buyers of the Standard or Anniversary Edition from the launch run will receive a free NEOGEO AES+ Gamepad, while Ultimate Edition customers will receive a 30% discount voucher redeemable against any NEOGEO AES+ game on the PLAION REPLAI website. Because the Ultimate Edition already includes the complete launch game line-up, the voucher can be held for a future game release or used to buy an additional copy of any available title, the company said.

The NEOGEO AES+ Ultimate Edition will remain a limited-production collector’s edition, with existing pre-orders secure and the remaining production allocation available for pre-order while stocks last.

Ben Jones, Commercial Director at PLAION REPLAI, addressed the delay directly in the announcement.

“This isn’t the announcement we hoped to make, but the response from the gaming community has been incredible. The level of enthusiasm for NEOGEO AES+ has given us the confidence to think much bigger about the future of the platform. With that comes a responsibility to deliver the launch properly.”

A Broader Software Roadmap

Alongside the ten launch titles already announced, PLAION REPLAI said it is in discussion with other licensors to bring more games to the platform, and that the extra time will give players around the world more opportunities to go hands-on with the system ahead of launch, supported by a more comprehensive communications campaign. The company said it is confident in the revised September 16, 2027 worldwide release date.

Jones said the company weighed every option for keeping its original timetable before settling on the later date.

“We explored every option to maintain our original timetable. In the end, we concluded that launching with severely constrained availability would not be fair to our community. Taking additional time allows us to secure more memory chips while expanding our manufacturing. Most importantly, everyone who has already pre-ordered keeps their priority place in the production queue.”

Announced in April With Ten Launch Games

PLAION REPLAI announced the NEOGEO AES+ on April 16, 2026, opening pre-orders that day with the launch date set as November 12, 2026, and the hardware produced in collaboration with SNK, the producer of the original console. Announced pricing was £179.99 (€199.99) for the Standard Edition, £269.99 (€299.99) for the 35th Anniversary Edition and £69.99 (€79.99) for each game cartridge.

The console forgoes emulation in favour of ASIC, or Application-Specific Integrated Circuits, and offers full compatibility with original NEOGEO AES cartridges. Its features include low-latency HDMI output at up to 1080p, an AV out for CRT displays, on-screen BIOS and DIP switches on the bottom of the console for territory language selection, overclocking and display modes, lower power usage and permanent high-score saves for each game.

The ten launch games are Metal Slug, The King of Fighters 2002, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Big Tournament Golf, Shock Troopers, Samurai Shodown V Special, Pulstar, Twinkle Star Sprites, Magician Lord and Over Top.

The Anniversary Edition bundle applies an ice white design to a wireless Arcade Stick, a Memory Card and a white Metal Slug cartridge that will not be sold anywhere else. Separate accessories include a 1:1 replica Arcade Stick updated for wired and wireless use, a 1:1 replica Gamepad and a 1:1 replica Memory Card that no longer requires a cell battery. The PLAION REPLAI online store lists the standard console, the Anniversary Edition and the Ultimate Edition alongside Arcade Sticks in black and white, a Gamepad, a Memory Card and the ten game cartridges.
