Enemy of the State: Everything We Know

In case you missed last year's Future Games Show event, developer Brave Lamb Studio brought Enemy of the State to the table, a top-down co-op shooter set in the 1920s during the height of mobster rule. According to the premium indie developer, the upcoming game will project a coming-of-age tale, one that primarily sees you rise through the syndicate as a low-ranking criminal, right through to the forefront of the hierarchy.

Of course, as it is early days yet, there's still plenty left for Brave Lamb Studio to unravel. That said, Enemy of the State has been fleshed out to the point of giving us enough of an insight to construct a list well-rounded enough to digest. So, if you are curious to learn more about the upcoming mobster flick, then be sure to read on. Here's everything you need to know about it.

What Is Enemy of the State?

Enemy of the State is a top-down online multiplayer shooter by Brave Lamb Studio, a developer that just so happens to be working in tandem with War Hospital, a medical simulator set during World War I that will reportedly release in 2023.

Enemy of the State, much like other games set during the golden era of mobster activity, will cast its focus on the 1920s, a time during which criminality is commonplace and every thief, mercenary, and thug longs for a place at the apex of the food chain. This will be where your journey commences—at the opposite end of the scale, unknown, broke, and with the small fish in a big pond. It's your goal, in short, to monopolize the 1920s, doing all in your power to divvy up the brackets and fortify a criminal empire worth fighting for.

Story

So, you wanna be a gangster, eh? Good news, as Enemy of the State builds on that exact fantasy by erecting a simple underdog tale that provides you with all the tools, connections, and opportunities to become a mafia boss that's based entirely on your own ambition. Your story, which will take you all over the world as an up-and-coming figurehead in the mafia, will involve having to execute heists, assassinations, kidnappings, and turf takeovers in a multitude of bouts against rival families.

It goes without saying that Enemy of the State, adopting the nonlinear format that it clearly swears by, won't have you stuck on a level-by-level ladder, meaning the narrative itself will be tailored by the choices you and your crew make along the way. To this end, I suppose we can expect plenty of variety as far as story arcs go, none of which will adhere to any strict set of guidelines.

Gameplay

Adopting a top-down perspective, Enemy of the State will allow for players to get a clear view of the battlefields and biomes that will supposedly make up a huge portion of the game. Gameplay-wise, budding bosses will be able to build their own hideouts, form their own syndicates, and use a combination of cash and influence to unlock new perks, cosmetics, weapons, and outfits.

According to Brave Lamb, the campaign will take you all over the world, from the States to Japan and an entire treasure trove of locations between. In each region of the map, you will find a wide range of missions to complete, including takeovers, assassinations, and robberies, all of which will reward you with a number of perks and unlockables. The idea, really, is to build your empire, conquer the monopoly, and develop a network of connections that will boost both your bank and your reputation.

Development

Enemy of the State is being developed by Brave Lamb Studio, a Poland-based firm that, along with the game in question, is also working on War Hospital, a medical simulation game in which players must revolutionize the medical field and use various technologies to serve the soldiers out on the frontline during World War I.

On the subject of Enemy of the State, Brave Lamb Studio brought the project to light back in June 2022. Since then, the game has gone on to receive a couple of trailers and a bit of information indicating that it will be coming to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC in “mid-2024.”

Enemy of the State - Announce Trailer

Speaking of trailers, Brave Lamb Studio did go on to release something of the sort last year. Unfortunately, the preview it did supply wasn't anything particularly exciting, as it mostly outlined the general aesthetic of the game and, in turn, failed to highlight any major gameplay elements. Still intrigued? You can catch a glimpse of it for yourself by checking out the video embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Enemy of the State will be coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam at some point in “mid-2024.” A rather vague window, sure, but all lines seem to suggest that it'll be coming in either May or June next year. At the time of writing, however, it really is too early to say for certain, so we'll be sure to keep our eyes and ears open for anything on the matter.

At this moment in time, there's no telling if or when Enemy of the State will be coming to either Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus. Typically, though, these sorts of announcements are made in the three or four months before the launch, which technically means the earliest we'll be able to find out is early 2024.
