Persona 6: Everything We Know
You do know Persona 5 launched in 2016, right? Okay, just checking, because that’s how long since Atlus has given us any hint that a new iteration will be coming. When they finally did launch the Persona 6 teaser trailer, underline “teaser,” I am still left doubtful that it’ll be coming, at least not before Grand Theft Auto 6, possibly some more years from now.
Listen, I’m not being skeptical at all. The teaser trailer barely tells us anything beyond a horrific display of the multitude of headstones stretching farther than the eye can see, and then the logo. And you betcha, that green P6 logo has me jumping around like a little kid again. It’s about time we give the Phantom Thieves a rest and see where the series takes us next, even if it’s speculation.
Here we go: Everything we know about Persona 6 so far.
What is Persona 6?

Over 30 million copies sold later, Atlus is gearing up to give us their seventh mainline entry in the Persona series. This is a role-playing gaming franchise that has been around since 1996. So far, there have been six mainline entries: Revelations: Persona (1996), Persona 2: Innocent Sin (1999), Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (2000), Persona 3 (2006), Persona 4 (2008), and Persona 5 (2016). And then the tap ran dry, at least as far as the mainline games are concerned. The release dates have been spread out randomly that ten years later, I can’t even begin to predict when the next one might come out.
An official announcement and confirmation of the development of Persona 6 is comforting, though, even if it still doesn’t come with an official release date. We’ve been keeping busy with ports and expansions. Persona 5 Royal (2020) and Persona 3 Reload (2024) have been expanded versions that I’ve practically squeezed dry. And the spin-offs like Persona 5 Strikers and Persona Q simply don’t deliver the same satisfaction.
It’s time the Joker hangs his cape and allows a new protagonist, silent or otherwise, to take over. And I couldn’t tell you how ready I am for whoever that may be.
Story

So, here’s the gist of it. Atlus confirms that Persona 6 will, indeed, tell a brand new story. While new, it’ll still stick to the traditions set by its predecessors. I presume we’ll still be following high school students, trying to balance their academic schedules with saving the world. These stories are often pretty deep and incorporate a lot of mature themes. You also have supernatural elements in the powers and abilities you control.
The Persona series often paints a stark contrast between student day-to-day life and heart-palpitating supernatural action. And Persona 6 won’t stray too far from this. Despite the familiar plotlines, you should still anticipate a fresh path forward. One that tells a new story, complete with a new cast. And thus, newcomers and veterans should both feel like they’re experiencing the world anew.
Gameplay

A bit more specifically, Persona 6 will challenge players to discover their inner “Persona.” This is the power that resides within you, a supernatural power that leads to discovering extraordinary abilities. You aren’t the only one with Persona powers, though, as you’ll soon meet characters sharing similar abilities. Here’s where the life simulation gameplay elements come in with social interactions and forging friendships. The stronger your bonds, the better your chances against the looming darkness.
You can imagine leading the life of a normal high school student by day and fighting monsters by night. That’s the double life the Persona series has thrived in creating. The setting takes you, once again, to modern Japan. On a daily, your life is full of possibilities, be it romance or making sweet memories. However, you know this is only temporary, as underneath it all is a darkness brewing in the streets of Japan and the neighborhoods you call home. It’s all kinds of twisted threats, spearheaded by strange rumors, terrifying urban legends, and occult events that only you and your Persona allies are able to conquer.
Development

Veterans don’t need any convincing that Atlus, in partnership with SEGA, has got this. They’ve been working on the Persona franchise for over three decades now. What could possibly go wrong? If anything, Persona 6 feels like the culmination of so much history. The good news is that you can always jump in from anywhere you like, whether it’s the previous games that tell their own standalone stories or the upcoming game.
Oh, and fun fact: the first game, Revelations: Persona, launched in 1996, and is actually a spin-off from the renowned Shin Megami Tensei franchise. For newcomers, Atlus promises to usher you into its flagship franchise with grace, and that a new mystery will be waiting.
Trailer
Persona 6’s game description concludes by saying that we’ll be unraveling a new “haunting” mystery. And I got chills because I’ve watched the trailer, and it’s definitely a horrific dam about to burst. So many headstones that I can barely count are stacked together, as the camera moves over them for a minute, and leading up to some kind of altar or shrine with a foreboding entryway and vines hovering above it. Chills. And then cutouts of fragmented images that I can’t quite figure heads or tails out of it. Could Persona 6 be horror-themed? I definitely wouldn’t mind it at all.
Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

Even though the release date and editions are yet to be confirmed, you can rest easy knowing Persona 6 will be coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms. Yes, this includes Xbox Cloud as well. And yes, a wishlist link exists on the Xbox store. Any more questions you may have will surely be answered over the coming months, perhaps years, via the official social handles.
Mind you, Persona 4 Revival is also on its way, sometime on February 18, 2027, on all major platforms and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass from Day One of launch.
