CRYMACHINA: Everything We Know

FuRyu, a studio based over in Japan, has announced CRYMACHINA, an all-new action RPG. In this latest venture, players will fill the boots of three robotic girls in a Propagation Plant known as Eden. Synthetically detached from society, you will embark on an epic quest to become human. Or better yet, understand what it really means to be human. However, to achieve such a goal, one must first answer the question: how far would you go to seek answers? And secondly, would you kill to survive?

CRYMACHINA is an action RPG where mechanical girls strive to survive in a post-apocalyptic world to become “Real Humans,” the blurb reads. “But what does it mean to be a “Real Human”?”

It's still early days yet, but FuRyu has been kind enough to share some of the game's core details. Keen to learn more? Here's everything you need to know about it.

What Is CRYMACHINA?

CRYMACHINA is an upcoming action JRPG that centers its world around three girls' combined effort to become “real humans” in a futuristic world that's on the brink of collapse. In a desperate attempt to recapture the heart of civilization, you will need to branch out and venture across Eden, a long-forgotten Propagation Plant that oversees the ultimate goal of wanting to restore humans. Curious to know more, you will step forth and discover what it means to be human—even if it kills you.

“Join the three playable main characters as they fight in fast-paced action RPG combat featuring a myriad of tactics to customize your weapons and challenge your foes,” the Steam description reads. “This heartwarming story of love, told by synthetic beings, will pull at the strings of your biological heart.”

Story

CRYMACHINA will cast its focus on three mechanical drones—E.V.E characters who resemble real-life citizens who once lived in a long-forgotten world. In a desperate attempt to see if humans can return to the world, the trio will set out across Eden, a decaying plant that exists only to regenerate the human species. That's where you, the curious outsider, will enter the fold.

“In modern times, a strange disease runs rampant,” the blurb reads in part. “A young girl named Lebel Distel who teeters on the brink of death hears a mysterious voice–”You have been chosen.” Though taken by darkness, Leben awakens to find herself in a dark, post-apocalyptic world and is greeted by an android named Enoa.”

“Leben finds herself in Eden, the Propagation Plant, where machines continue to operate with the goal of creating “Real Humans” to restore humanity. Guided by Enoa, Leben becomes entangled in the battle to become a “Real Human,” it concludes.

Gameplay

FuRyu may have shed light on the storyline, but it certainly left a lot of the actual gameplay elements out. That said, its featured screenshots over on Steam clearly showcase a mixture of real-time combat, dungeon-dwelling, and full-fat cinematics. And so, with that, one can only begin to imagine the type of content that CRYMACHINA will employ.

Perhaps it's a little too early to say for certain, but JRPGs tend to gravitate towards having a lengthier campaign than most. Don't take our word for it, but chances are FuRyu is cooking up something big. Will it breach the fifty-hour marker? Who knows. Whatever the case, July 6th will be a real eye-opening day for us.

Development

FuRyu has been shoveling out RPGs for PlayStation and Switch for the best part of a decade now. Its latest project, CRYMACHINA, however, was originally teased via a rather cryptic website. In a strange turn of events, March 1st saw the global reveal of the upcoming JRPG, which was accompanied by a myriad of GIFs, screenshots, and a general blurb. It was also revealed that the game would be debuting in Japan on July 6, 2023. The global release, on the other hand, won't be happening until “Fall 2023.”

So, has FuRyu actually released any form of trailer for the action RPG yet? Fortunately, yes, and it comes by way of NIS America, the software company that will be collaborating with FuRyu. Looking remarkably futuristic and bulked out with classic JRPG-related tropes, the trailer was able to shed light on a multitude of elements, particularly its characters and narrative. Release Date, Platforms & Editions

CRYMACHINA will be launching exclusively in Japan for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Switch on July 6, 2023. It hasn't been said yet when the game will release outside of Japan, though the trailer does staple it to a general “Fall 2023” window. Unfortunately, we aren't likely to receive the definite date until a little ways down the line—most likely when FuRyu either lifts the veil on some additional gameplay footage, or a posts an end-of-quarter update.

As this is a PlayStation game we're talking about, there is that obvious questions that yearns to be answered: will it be coming to PlayStation Plus as a day-one exclusive? And to answer that, the answer is probably not. This is subject to change, though without any official confirmation from FuRyu to boot, it's wishful thinking at this point.

What's curious, on the other hand, is the fact that FuRyu has in fact already announced the details surrounding its special editions. Well, one of the two, anyway. According to the team, full details will be shared on the Limited Edition in May, whereas the Deluxe Edition will come with a mini artbook, and a digital soundtrack to boot.
