DOOM: The Dark Ages - Revelations — Everything We Know

DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations might as well be a fresh experience from what you’ve played through before because of the addition of new levels, maps, puzzles, demons, weapons, mysteries, and endgame content. This is the first and only expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages. It’s going for $19.99 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms via Steam and Battle.net, with support for Xbox Play Anywhere.

What is DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations?

DOOM: The Dark Ages - Revelations — Everything We Know

DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations is a downloadable content (DLC) package for DOOM: The Dark Ages. DLC packages often add more story missions, weapons, playable characters, and rewards to the base game. In Revelations’ case, you’ll play through an all-new story campaign that adds to the DOOM trilogy of the demon slayer. The campaign is pretty beefy, as it takes about ten or more hours to beat.

Story

Sixty percent of your playthrough will be advancing through the story campaign. The remaining 40% will be the endgame content. The DLC picks up where DOOM: The Dark Ages left off. The demon slayer, along with his Night Sentinels are betrayed and trapped in Purgatory. The way out isn’t so straightforward. You’ll have to confront the past, grappling with haunting truths and finding new strength to break free from your own mind and free your followers from hell. While the demon slayer is often on the lonesome, this time, a new mysterious ally helps you defeat an abomination of the gods. Waves of demons will still come at you, as always, standing between you and freedom.

Once you beat the story campaign, more demon-slaying awaits in the endgame content. You’ll revisit the levels you’ve played through in the campaign, except this time, encountering new puzzles, enemies, a boss fight, and arena battles that will push your skills to the limits.

Besides the story campaign and endgame content, you also have a hub area filled with secrets to discover. It’s the explorative part of DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations that uses a Metroidvania-style of level design and interconnected paths. Some of these levels are pulled from previous DOOM games, but splashed with a modern flair and visual effects.

Gameplay

Doom Slayer lying on the ground

DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations plays very much like the base game. The only difference is the addition of new toys to play with. The biggest addition is the Chain Spear, and its use cases are pretty mind-blowing. When your Shield Saw breaks, you have no choice but to rely on the Chain Spear.

From the name, you can already deduce that it can multitask. Some of the abilities tied to the Chain Spear include grabbing enemies and pulling them towards you. The chain is also a grappling hook, which can stab enemies and toss them around, while shooting through their guts. The spear part makes it a weapon you can throw at enemies. Still, you can jump up and do a slam dunk on enemies.

Quite frankly, all of the combat and movement possibilities you can pull off with the Chain Spear can be overwhelming. Yet it all clicks after a decent amount of practice. You’ll even reach a point when you’ll be forced to swap between the Chain Spear and the Shield Saw to deal with bosses. And it all just clicks.

Interestingly, the Chain Spear makes the demon slayer more mobile than before, despite his tankier, more grounded fighting style in DOOM: The Dark Ages. As Hugo Martin, Game Director and id Software Studio Co-Director, put it, “you’ll feel like a monster truck with a jet engine strapped to your back.”

New Features

The other new features you can expect to see in DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations DLC are:

  • Fresh mysteries
  • More enemy types
  • New levels with deeper puzzles
  • Updated Ripatorium 3.0 combat arena. The update will add three new maps, demons, weapons, more extensive customization, preset saves, and better passcode generation.

Development

dark hellish castle in DOOM: The Dark Ages - Revelations

Id Software developer and Bethesda Softworks publisher are still the team behind DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations. They have worked on all three DOOM (2016), DOOM Eternal (2020), and DOOM: The Dark Ages (2025) games. While DOOM (2016) had three expansions that added new maps and weapons, and DOOM Eternal had two expansions, DOOM: The Dark Ages will have only one. And I’m okay with that, since Revelations has proven to be a pretty beefy campaign worth buying. In fact, it may be bigger than both of DOOM Eternal’s expansions combined. Now, that’s value for money right there.

And the core gameplay in Revelations is also substantial. The demon slayer’s feet are stuck to the ground a lot more in DOOM: The Dark Ages. He’s more grounded with a weightier and tankier build. By adding the Chain Spear, though, your movement speeds up a lot faster. You have a dash ability and can jump a lot higher, which makes the action look and feel more electric. It’s like the best of both worlds. Deliberate combat while still enjoying the freedom to shoot out the chain from your Chain Spear and use it as a grappling hook to zip around the arenas.

Trailer

Check out the official trailer for DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations posted on YouTube. The star of the show is, of course, the Chain Spear. It’s the spectacle show, but also the small details. The sparks when you throw it at enemies. It’s also pretty cool how it pairs with the shotgun and machine gun. Visually, it looks stunning, elevated by the electric sound.
