5 Best FPS Games on PlayStation 5 (May 2023)

FPS, or first-person shooter, games are a staple in the gaming industry. They allow the player to see things from the character’s eyes. This way, it creates the illusion that you’re walking in the character’s shoes. It gets better because FPS games often curate time-sensitive encounters that require fast thinking to execute. You may have swarms of enemies coming at you. If you don’t think quickly about how to respond, you may die.
This kind of fast-paced, high-octane action has propelled most FPS games to the cream of the crop of games out there. It’s how franchises like Call of Duty constantly deliver top-notch experiences. But there are far more exceptional FPSs out there waiting for you to explore.
With the capabilities of the PlayStation 5, more outstanding experiences continue to flood the market, so much so that it becomes difficult to settle on just one. Today, though, we’re curating the best FPS games on PlayStation 5 in May 2023, worth the try. Let’s see how they stack up, shall we?
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Call of Duty returns with the 2022 FPS sequel to the 2019 reboot, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It’s a wholesome experience to have if you’re looking for a franchise that has stood the test of time. Although there are more superior FPS games today, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remains the go-to choice for FPS lovers out there.
If you want to have a throwdown with friends, you can choose the multiplayer option. However, the single-player campaign is more than sufficient to command all boredom away. Sitting solo through a playthrough, you’ll navigate lots of thrilling, dramatic moments filled to the brim with enemy encounters. The missions are varied enough to re-experience them twice over.
It’s nice to experience a realistic version of modern warfare, different from the world war adaptations of previous installments. Guns and vehicles also adapt to modern takes. Above all, Call of Duty’s crisp aiming and graphics continue to soar the experience above the rest. But even with the innovative changes, there are just better FPS experiences out there to explore.
4. Destiny 2
Alternatively, you may consider the action MMO Destiny 2. It features a single evolving world that anyone can jump into from anywhere and at any time. At the start, players create a character called a Guardian. From then on, they can collect resources and craft unique weapons, armor, and gear that suit their playstyle.
Destiny 2 features a fantastic core gameplay system. Its gunplay is excellent, with a great feel to the weight and impact. There are a variety of weapons to choose from, including sniper rifles, pistols, shotguns, grenades, and more. Each one poses varied handling and recoil patterns. Thus, in addition to gunplay, you’ll need a strategy to successfully complete missions.
To seal it off is a deeply engaging story told within an immersive, galaxy-open world. Thanks to constant updates, new features and content continue to make their way to Destiny 2. Today, the game has overwhelming content in PvP and PvE modes; it’s hard to jump into the game and lack something constructive to keep busy with.
3. DOOM Eternal
Another popular FPS you should look into is the DOOM series. Specifically, DOOM Eternal, which is the seventh game in the series and one that’s been named one of the best FPS ever made. When Hell's demons invade Earth, you're tasked with becoming the “Slayer” who has to fight demons across dimensions and save humanity from eternal doom.
You’ll have more than enough tools at your disposal, from a flamethrower to a retractable blade to upgraded guns and more. Thanks to a faster and stronger form, slaying demons for extra health and chainsawing them to scoop up ammo feels hella satisfying. With the grappling hook ability, you can swing across long ranges and even string grapples with aggressive attacks.
Alternatively, you may jump into a friendly duel with friends, fighting against two player-controlled demons. Either way, each encounter is an intense, brutal and bloody experience most other FPS games can only dream of.
2. Apex Legends
Apex Legends remains one of the best battle royale-hero shooters of all time. Throughout each season, players enjoy a growing list of legendary characters to choose from. Each character has a unique and powerful skill set. Further, they each have unique styling and cosmetic appeal players can unlock.
Each battle royale round can host up to 60 players. Within the limited time and takeovers, players are tasked with teaming up with friends and working their way upward toward fame and fortune.
Thanks to a deep, tactical gameplay system, players will need to take a step back before picking out their characters. And as more seasons continue to launch, hopefully, more new features and improvements will continue to transform and propel Apex Legends to new heights.
1. Deathloop
I've always wondered if you were trapped on an island with your nemesis, would you work together or finish each other off? Well, Deathloop instigates a similar idea where two rival assassins are trapped in a mysterious time loop on the island of Blackreef. There are several interesting pillars here, including diving into some fun investigative work and keeping your rival at bay.
Each day in the time loop presents new challenges and insights. Perhaps hunting and assassinating key targets will break the loop? If it doesn’t work, fortunately, you get another chance to try. Of course, repeating the same strategy won’t work, so you’re constantly pushed to travel different paths. All the while, your rival, Julianna, controlled by another player or AI, hunts you down.
Blackreef itself is a sight to behold. So it’s not exactly a painful experience to wake up in the same place over and over again. It features a stunning artistic world with retro futuristic, 60s-inspired surroundings. But stylish environments aside, can you escape Blackreef’s time prison and break the Death Loop?
