5 Best Character Creation Suites in Gaming

 on

Ah yes, character creation, the bread and butter of most, if not all role-playing games. Without it, our heroes just wouldn't be as relatable, and would more often than not just slide into the sketchbook of generic video game characters. But thanks to the vast majority of developers, being able to toy with our protagonist's features has become a fundamental part of the process—and it has only gotten more extensive since its infancy.

Of course, we all love the thought of being able to transform our virtual heroes into watered-down versions of ourselves. Who doesn't, right? It's a novelty that never really wears off, and we're all for it. And when you have a game like one of these five, it's quite easy to get lost for hours—even with the minor details that make little to no effect on your character's performance. Like, say, the length of their moustache?

5. Fallout 4

Bethesda certainly has a way with showing off its creative side through its wide selection of character creation suites. Besides the Elder Scrolls saga, the team has also gone all-out to provide its Fallout faction with a fully stocked archive of customizable features. This was best shown in Fallout 4, which eventually led to the YouTube community establishing a whole trend over who could make the ugliest characters.

Of course, while you're able to amend your race, sex, and a whole bunch of basic facial features, you can also add various wounds, scars and other injuries caused by post-apocalyptic fallout. Also, your character's son is modelled after you, so whatever you choose to be—your kin will see the wrath of your creativity. Is that a good thing? You tell us.

4. Black Desert Online

Black Desert Online has been praised countless times for its well-oiled machine of a creation suite. And for good reason, seeing as it has perhaps one of the most impressive palettes on the modern market. From the strands of hair to the crooked jaw, BDO allows for its players to build without limits. The only real thing stopping you from creating something otherworldly is, well—you.

The MMO has been around for quite some time now, though that hasn't exactly made its creation suite any less of a marvel. It's booming with tweakable features and perks, which means you'll spend hours altering minor details rather than investing in the actual story. But hey, you can't be expected to run the course in your tighty-whities, can you? Can you?

3. Aion

One of the biggest issues with MMO games are, well, you often find yourself bumping into players that look a whole lot like you. And let's be honest, that can ruin the immersion ever so slightly, as it makes you feel a little less special, and more of a single pawn on a board of a million-plus.

This isn't a problem with Aion, the universally acclaimed Korean MMO. In fact, the creation suite is so colossal that it's almost impossible to make two characters the same. By that, you can pretty much rest assured that no doppelganger will haunt your style. You and you alone can be the center of attention. And who doesn't want to be the main character, right?

2. The Sims 4

Providing you have the tools (or in this case, mods) to expand your creation library to reach its fullest potential, then you'll find yourself pretty spoilt for choice when it comes to The Sims 4. Thanks to Maxis' love for creativity, the Sim builder boasts one of the widest range of changeable features in gaming. And to be fair, its vanilla version ain't half bad, either.

It may not be the most realistic video game in the world, but it does provide a solid choice of customizable components. Every Sim is unique in their own sort of way, and they come to life through their chosen traits and aspirations. So, it goes far beyond a few facial features. Like, far, far beyond. Depending on your style, you can either make happy-go-lucky merfolk, or stone-hearted witches. It's entirely up to you.

1. Saints Row (Series)

Saints Row, particularly Saints Row: The Third, has one of the most memorable creation suites in the history of the action-adventure genre. Although not the most visually appealing game on the market, it is absolutely bustling with customizable sections that affect both your style, your gang, and your penthouse suite.

Besides the banquet of facial features and clothes to choose from, Saints Row also lets you select taunts, compliments, and even the voiceover artist. And then, of course, you have the customizable vehicles, stores, and a whole city to make your own. Basically, it's an opportunity for you to tap into your inner zen, unleash creativity, and soak the whole world in royal purple.
