Game WOLFHOUND

Nazis were rumored to be engaged in advanced scientific and technological experiments at the height of WWII. WOLFHOUND, an upcoming retro Metroidvania from Bit Kid, builds on this concept to deliver a unique and fun gaming experience.

WOLFHOUND is a fun, action-packed game based on an intriguing story. The game has been in the works for several years now, and Bit Kid is taking its time to avoid the mistakes it made with Chasm. It could be some time before the game comes out, but we know enough to paint you a clear picture of what to expect. Here is an exhaustive preview of WOLFHOUND.

What is WOLFHOUND?

 The Game WOLFHOUND

WOLFHOUND is a retro-themed 2D side-scrolling Metroidvania game from Bit Kid. It was revealed recently during an IGN Live Showcase. It would have been easy to miss, considering the hundreds of other announcements, but it stood out for its unique story and setting. Besides the classic Metroidvania design, this game also takes some inspiration from NES Metal Gear games.

Story

Story

It is 1944, during the height of World War II, when an Allied vessel vanishes near the Bermuda Triangle. The vessel’s disappearance leads to the discovery of an island within the Bermuda Triangle, a base for the Nazis and Axis powers.

The Nazis have turned the uncharted island into a testbed for their evil experiments and inventions. A mad scientist called Dr. Steiner is working on sinister experiments and creating abominable creatures like mutant insects, zombies, and other creatures that become more grotesque as you progress through the levels. He is also inventing new weapons technology to give the Nazis an advantage in the war. That’s not all, as he is also working on other secret inventions that could pose bigger threats.

The Allies send the only soldier capable of uncovering the Nazis’ secrets and stopping them: Captain Chuck “WOLFHOUND” Rossetti. He is a one-man army with a witty sense of humor and a strict principle about not leaving a pal behind. However, while he is capable, he has never faced the types of enemies and threats waiting for him on this island. Still, he must uncover the Nazis’ secrets, destroy their evil inventions, and turn their technology against them.

Gameplay

The Metal Gear NES And Metroid-Inspired Wolfhound | New Gameplay Today

The WOLFHOUND gameplay style is packed full of action and adventure and presented in a classic retro design, creating a sense of simplicity and nostalgia. It is also based on classic Metroidvania gameplay styles, including progressive levels and item/location upgrades, making the experience increasingly exciting.

Action is the biggest aspect of the game, as Capt. Wolfhound fights Nazi soldiers and other strange, deadly enemies. The island is full of Nazi soldiers armed with guns and other deadly weapons, including tanks with giant drills. It is also crawling with other deadly creatures, including zombies and mutant insects such as giant spiders. Notably, the creatures become more grotesque and aggressive as you progress through the levels.

Exploration is also a major aspect of WOLFHOUND’s gameplay style. The island, located within the Bermuda Triangle, appears otherworldly and has strange environments. It comprises ten interconnected areas, which you unlock as you progress through the game. Some of the environments are strange and require special tools to navigate. Moreover, you will encounter a few perplexing environmental puzzles that you must solve to proceed.

Fortunately, you have effective weapons to help you destroy your enemies, including handguns, flamethrowers, a powerful rail gun, and more. Additionally, you have various tools to help you navigate the diverse environments, including a jetpack and gravity boots. Notably, you unlock new and better weapons and items as you progress based on the classic Metroidvania design. For example, you can boost your guns’ firepower, damage rating, reload speeds and firing speeds.

WOLFHOUND is a retro game in the purest sense, featuring crystal-clear pixel art, NES 8-bit gaming style, and a 2D side-scrolling design. The soundtracks are also retro NES and created using Famitracker. However, it also boasts a native 4K resolution and convincing CRT effects, enabling you to enjoy the best of both traditional and modern gaming tech.

Development

What to Expect- WOLFHOUND

WOLFHOUND is the brainchild of Bit Kid, an upcoming game studio based in Maryland. The studio is working with other contract developers to work on the game. Interestingly, James Petruzzi, the head of Bit Kid, says that he got the inspiration for the game from playing The Mummy Demastered, a retro run-and-gun game. Moreover, he is developing the game partly as an homage to his recently deceased grandpa, a WWII veteran with incredible stories of the war.

Trailer

WOLFHOUND Announcement Trailer

The official trailer for WOLFHOUND is a satisfying and entertaining preview of what to expect. It covers all of the game’s aspects in one-and-a-half minutes. You learn about the game’s story, gameplay style, environments, enemies, upgrade system, and more.

The trailer begins with the background story, establishing the year, location, and situation. It doesn’t waste time explaining that Nazis have something cooking in the Bermuda Triangle before diving into the gameplay style. Capt. Wolfhound makes a grand entrance in a downed plane and exhibits his dark sense of humor before going on a rampage. It showcases various enemies, including Nazi soldiers, monsters, zombies, giant spiders, flying wasps, and more.

The retro pixel art and NES soundtrack in the trailer make the game feel nostalgic. The environments are diverse and a bit challenging to navigate. Interestingly, the trailer also showcases various environmental puzzles and hazards that you must overcome. Sadly, the game can’t launch sooner.
