TORMENTOR: Everything We Know

If there was ever an award for most disturbing video game on the planet, then it would without doubt be handed to TORMENTOR, an upcoming third-person horror title that lets you *checks script* “take on the role of a merciless torturer.” As such, you are invited to not only torment a series of helpless victims, but also monetize their suffering to help fund new wards for your dungeon and tools for your arsenal. So, you know, not exactly the most family-friendly thing in the pipeline.

Curious to know more about Madmind Studios' highly controversial game? Let it be said that this isn't exactly aimed towards the squeamish or the fainthearted, as made clear by its in-your-face marketing approach and in-game barbarity. If you're still interested in learning more about it, though, then read on. Here's everything we can tell you about TORMENTOR.

What Is TORMENTOR?

TORMENTOR is a third-person action-horror game in which you assume the role of an executioner, one whose purpose is to not only hunt down victims in what can only be described as a hell-bent purgatory, but stream their demises on the darkweb to help fund future experiments. How this is done, really, is entirely up to you and the tools or traps you have in your arsenal. The more victims you claim, the more money you make to upgrade your evil empire.

It goes without saying that TORMENTOR isn't going to be suitable for every gamer and their closest neighbor. It's also worth noting that, in spite of Madmind Studios' best efforts to make it appealing enough to reach a wider demographic, a lot of countries are bound to ban it before it actually launches. As for where or when it will be banned, though, is anybody's guess. And yet, it's safe to say that not every country will be in support of it.

Story

TORMENTOR is supposedly set in an abandoned prison, a colorless void in which you, the merciless executioner, must transform. With a high-powered arsenal of deadly vices, you must build a prison for those sentenced to death, using all of your assets to construct cells, traps, and endless mazes. And it's within said mazes that you, the notorious killer, will have to hunt your prey and stream it.

“Fight against a developing mental illness that takes away your memories and causes more and more frequent and dangerous fainting. Work with an organized criminal group using darkweb to get more doses of the experimental drug that helps to keep your mind sober.”

Gameplay

There are two primary modes in TORMENTOR: the mindless slaughter mode, and the manhunt mode. In the bog-standard mode, you're tasked with customizing your victims, along with their cells, and then hunting them like prey. According to the description, you will perform brutal finishers, as well as “live stream their deaths” for anonymous contractors. This is, at least in part, the basic setup for the game. It hasn't been said whether or not it will be receiving a multiplayer mode just yet, though it's believed that it will be single-player only.

Enabling the manhunt mode works in a similar way, only your victims can finally fight back. Again, the general idea here is to stalk your prey, only they can wield weapons and retaliate against your cruelty. In a nutshell, the aim is to hunt, trap, and murder, similar to Dead by Daylight—only with more gore. A lot, lot more gore.

Development

Madmind Studios is the developer pulling all the strings here. This is a firm that's best known for games including Agong, Succubus, and PARANOID. TORMENTOR, which will serve as the studio's fourth major game, will be coming to Steam at some point in 2024. That is, providing the game can pull out all the stops to squeeze by the respective authorities, of course.

Trailer

So, is there a trailer for this creation? Surprisingly yes there is, though it's probably best you don't view it in a public or, more importantly, workplace. And yes, it is that bad; in fact, it's so disturbing that you'll have to navigate over to the official Steam page for all the gory details. You can find the trailer for it, along with all the other patch details here.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

TORMENTOR is expected to release at some stage in 2024 on PC via Steam. It hasn't been said whether or not Madmind Studios will be porting it over to Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch. That said, it's one thing to smuggle it onto Steam without having the eternal backlash from countless authorities, so chances are it won't be shedding its PC exclusivity for a fair while yet. Perhaps 2025, though?

As with any game that bears the right to breach the Xbox and PlayStation markets, there is a possibility that Game Pass or PlayStation Plus could very well soak up the game in the distant future. Again, this is stretching pretty far, and it's unlikely to be confirmed until at least 2024. Therefore, if you are by any chance interested in TORMENTOR, then you can add it to your Wishlist on Steam here.

As it stands, there are no special editions to pre-order outside of the standard one on Steam. If Madmind Studios could be so lucky, then it may just go on to receive such versions in the build-up to its eventual launch. But if we had to put a wager on it, then we'd say no, not in a million years. Still, never say never.

For more information on TORMENTOR, you can follow the official Steam page here. If anything changes ahead of its 2024 launch, we'll be sure to let you know all the details right here on gaming.net.
