I Am Jesus Christ: Everything We Know

Now, if you thought Goat Simulator was absurd—even by simulation games' standards, then wait till you get a load of I Am Jesus Christ, a first-person adventure game that chronicles Christ's footprints, along with all the miracles and magic-imbued revelations the disciple conjured along the way. That's really what it is, in a nutshell, and we can't for the life of us make heads or tails of it. And yet, it intrigues us, nonetheless.

But what more do we actually know about the upcoming Jesus sim, and why should you be keeping tabs on it as the studio in charge irons out the creases and sets up for a 2023 launch? Well, here's everything we're able to tell you on the matter. I Am Jesus Christ: what, when, and above all — why?

What Is I Am Jesus Christ?

I Am Jesus Christ is an upcoming adventure game by independent developer SimulaM. The journey, which will put you in the shoes of none other than Jesus Christ himself, will see you tracing an identical footpath, from the baptism to the resurrection, during which you will travel far and wide to perform miracles and, eventually, embark on a legendary pilgrimage to change the fate of the world.

In their words: “Go back in time over 2,000 years and follow the same path as Jesus Christ, from his baptism to the resurrection. Inspired by the New Testament stories, ‘I Am Jesus Christ’ is a simulation like no other.” And that's just it; it really is a simulation like no other. Or at least, it's beyond leagues apart from some of the other questionable simulation games we've clocked in the past, anyway.

Story

In any case, we'd suggest a bit of light reading to help wrap your head around the details of the story I Am Jesus Christ will employ. Books—and I'm not just saying it, like the Bible, for example. If you're well-versed in all things Jesus Christ, then hey, you're already one step ahead, and can no doubt construct a timeline of events that the upcoming first-person sim will adhere to.

From birth to baptism, crucifixion to resurrection, I Am Jesus Christ will portray just about every square inch of Christ's tale, and will let you, being the one with the powers, pull the strings and perform one of countless miracles. That's quite a tall order in any case, yet one that the ambitious simulator aims to fulfill by the fourth quarter of 2023.

Gameplay

From what we've caught so far, I Am Jesus Christ will feature an open world setting—a world in which map markers will request the assistance of a miracle-making pilgrim. As such, you will travel far and wide, fulfilling requests, helping those in need, and carving a legacy that would go on to inspire generations to come. And that's just the tip of the iceberg, with plenty more to feature between the nooks and crannies of the New Testament stories.

There'll be magic, too, according to the blurb. Going by the somewhat vague description of the game, players will be able to “recharge the Holy Spirit’s power through prayer as brand new concepts work in conjunction with timeless tales.” So there's that, also.

In other words: “Are you prepared to fight with Satan in the desert, cure the sick and help the needy? Perform over 30 iconic miracles from the feeding of the 5,000 and healing lepers to the calming of the sea and giving sight to the blind.”

Development

I Am Jesus Christ was conceived with one purpose in mind: to “spread the Gospel uniquely and engagingly.” That's according to SimulaM, a studio that brought news of the game back in 2022, after which it launched a Prologue edition on Steam. Since then, the game itself has received a short trailer over on its chosen streaming channel, and a rather vague Q4 2023 launch window. Other than that, the studio has kept up to date with an official devlog—a blog that outlines the project's latest features and tweaks. You can see that here.

So, has I Am Jesus Christ caught your attention? If so, then you'll be pleased to know that the studio behind it did in fact release a trailer a little ways back. You can see it for yourself in the video embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

I Am Jesus Christ will be launching exclusively on PC via Steam in Q4 2023. Will it be coming to consoles in the future? At this point in time, who knows. But if it does shape up for a soft launch on Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, then it won't be until at least Q2 2024. Until then, you'll have to settle for a simple wishlist request over on Steam.

Perhaps it's a little too early on in the development phase, but the fact is, at the time of writing, there are no special or deluxe editions outside of the standard copy over on Steam. This isn't unusual though, to be fair, as independent titles rarely receive such versions until after they've been on the market for a significant amount of time. It also depends on the amount of traffic it receives, which alone plays a crucial role in the decision to branch out to other editions post-launch. So there's that.
