Halo: Campaign Evolved — Everything We Know
Over two decades have gone by since Halo: Combat Evolved. Yet, the memories remain forever engorged in my brain. Throughout the Halo series, we’ve been on an incredible journey of fear, bravery, and hope. I still remember my first steps into the strange, ring-shaped Halo world, and how I couldn’t possibly imagine how devastating it would get. It’s not just The Covenant that was the biggest threat, despite running us out of our home planet. It’s the Flood and its horrific body horror.
I’m uncertain whether the upcoming Halo: Campaign: Evolved will be the exact same. It is a reimagined version of the original. So, you’ll definitely be playing through familiar scenes. Even in the trailer, it’s almost uncanny how memorable it all still feels. Let’s break down everything we know so far about Halo: Campaign: Evolved below.
What is Halo: Campaign Evolved?

Halo: Campaign: Evolved is an upcoming remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved. This was a first-person shooter game, released in 2001, by Bungie. By virtue of its launch on the original Xbox console should tell you how aged it is. Now, Halo Studios and Xbox Game Studios are bringing the game back, transforming the graphics to high-definition and adding new content for all players to enjoy.
Two things stand out to me when reading the new game’s description: “faithful remake” and “modern reimagined version.” This tells me that the campaign should remain largely the same.
Story

So, get ready to replay through the original story. However, it may still be a fresh experience, given that all cutscenes and player interactions will be in high-definition. The cinematics will have better quality, as will the controls. Halo: Campaign: Evolved will follow the principles of remaking an old game, which is to offer users a better user experience.
A quick refresher. You’ve just been rudely run off your home planet. Your tight escape sends you crash landing on a mysterious ring-shaped planet called Halo. While seemingly beautiful, Halo soon reveals itself to be a harsh place to set up a new camp. But it’s your last resort for humanity’s survival. And so, you begin to eradicate any danger that rears its ugly head, from The Covenant who follow you to your new refuge to parasitic enemies like the Flood and more.
Leading your charge is the Master Chief. By his side is the AI companion Cortana. Together, you explore Halo, discovering dark secrets and fighting for the survival of humanity. All of these will unfold via the cutscenes and missions in the original Halo: Combat Evolved. However, the level design will be refined for a smoother playthrough.
Even with the original story intact, though, you’ll still play through new content. This’ll follow the Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson. It’ll include three missions and tell a brand-new storyline. Halo Studios has yet to reveal the details for this new storyline. They do assure new and returning players of a campaign that feels both “timeless” and “brand new.”
Gameplay

I’ll be okay with the gameplay remaining the same, given how Halo: Combat’s gunplay took the series to the next level. The multiplayer experience also hit all the right spots for tension and chaos. The fights are really intense, and you definitely feel the pressure of needing to work together and survive. I love a game that focuses on skill and keeps on challenging you. If those core concepts remain the same, Halo: Campaign: Evolved should be good to go.
Now, if Halo Studios irons out the few kinks. For now, they promise to add more weapons, vehicles, and enemies. You’ll also use “Skulls” to change the rules of combat. They’ll, for example, add new tactics to your next mission, and as a result, increase replayability. Let’s keep in mind that the gameplay will have refined controls. So, smoother and more engaging gameplay, with more customization and ways to change your next mission.
Meanwhile, you can still opt for a solo or multiplayer run. The multiplayer option allows up to four players who can work together in online co-op to complete objectives. Mind you, Halo: Campaign: Evolved has crossplay and crossprogression functionality, which pretty much has all the concerning points covered.
Development

The developer, Halo Studios, and publisher, Xbox Game Studios, plan to design the graphics and animations in Halo: Campaign: Evolved from the ground up. They plan to remaster the soundtrack and rebuild the sound design fully. For the combat, they want to make it sharper and add nine iconic weapons from the larger Halo series.
Moreover, they will add a new, standalone mission, which will incorporate new environments, gameplay, and enemies. Also noteworthy is the introduction of hijacking vehicles and the ability to fully drive a Wraith tank. The ultimate goal? To modernize the original and make it replayable through “Skull” gameplay modifiers, randomized weapons, enemies, and environments, and more quality-of-life changes.
Trailer
Both the cinematic story trailer and the “New Missions” gameplay trailer are a joy to watch. They reveal characters, environments, and storytelling that fans of Halo already know too well. The first-person shooter gameplay still looks as fun and satisfying. Only this time, it has a cleaner and more vibrant attire thrown over it. Unreal Engine 5 has done some magic here. However, St. Johnson sounds like a commercial and bears a resemblance to Steve Harvey. Odd, but intriguing still to be heading back to Halo.
