Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3

When rumors suggested that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 would be an expansion of its prequel, all eyes were on the upcoming expansion. To everyone’s surprise, Activision revealed the truth. Modern Warfare 3 is a standalone FPS video game series and a sequel to the 2022 Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Though MW3 is scheduled for full release on November 10, 2023, fans are hungry for Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games’ new iconic multiplayer map.

Modern Warfare 3 runs at just the same maximum framerate as its predecessor, 60 fps. This is quite a downer for a contemporary sequel. All the same, near-similar features to MW2 are not unexpected, but with new additions to the older edition. We can see some ray-tracing effects in the new multiplayer series’ trailer. But do they really add to the game’s thrill? Let’s compare everything on Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 vs. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3.

What is Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2?

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 was released on October 28, 2022, for Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. The first-person shooter video game preceded the 2019 reboot to become the nineteenth iteration of Call of Duty's main series.

The game’s storyline revolves around two special units of Task Force 141 and Los Vaqueros, as they try to neutralize a terrorist leader who holds ballistic missiles. The units are drawn from a multinational special unit and the Mexican army’s special forces.

Task Force 141 is the main protagonist under Captain John Price’s leadership. Ghost, Soap, and Gaz are some of the other characters in this unit. The task force also receives reinforcement from Nikolai, a private military leader, Colonel Alejandro, Commander Farah Karim, and Kate Laswell.

Major Hassan Zyani is the main antagonist and an ally of the terrorist organization Al-Qatala. Hassan has the full support of the Las Almas cartel, which possesses devices for missiles. Many residents of Las Almas are later slaughtered as the Shadow Company looks for Hassan.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is the official sequel to the first-person shooter video game MW2. It is the twentieth installment in the action-packed series Call of Duty, set for release for Windows, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Series X/S.

The iteration still retains the realistic and modern feel of the former releases. It also maintains the storyline of special forces units tracking down a terrorist to prevent a possible world war. Vladimir Makarov is the terrorist and the main antagonist. He is the commander of the private Russian military group in Modern Warfare 2, who appears to be teased towards the end of the storyline.

Task Force 141 remains the primary protagonist with Captain John Price and his squad of Lieutenant Ghost, Sergeants Soap, and Gaz. Farah Karim, the Urzikstan commander of the liberation force, also returns along with Kate Laswell.

Storyline

Modern Warfare 2 vs Modern Warfare 3

From a quick assessment, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 has a more rousing storyline. Unlike the prequel, the storyline takes a slight twist, although Price and the squad are still tracking down the terrorist group. However, this time, the story begins with Makarov escaping from the custody of Kate Laswell, the station chief holding him after a life imprisonment sentence.

Besides tracking down and recapturing Makarov, Price and his team have other missions, like rushing to the nuclear power plant to prevent the terrorist group from accessing the nuclear material. Laswell also moves with Nikolai to invade Arklov Military Base and even launches an attack with stolen missiles.

Villains and Characters

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3

Like its predecessor, MW3 is centered around the main protagonist, Task Force 141. All the playable characters return from Price and the squad. Yuri is still the playable character for the better part of the game. Further, besides the characters available by default, the game introduces a new lineup of 25 operators. The operators fall into two camps: KorTac and SpecGru. They still feature names like Makarov, Price, and Ghost. Players only unlock them in campaign progression, multiplayer, bonus pre-orders, zombies, and exclusive access this time.

Vladimir Makarov is one of the overarching villains in CoD: Modern Warfare 2, alongside General Shepherd. Makarov repeatedly comes up as the best villain in the video game series, and fans undoubtedly await to see him again in MW3. Though his dream of starting World War III is yet to come true, he is the most terrifying threat in the series. Apparently, Makarov interrupted General Shepherd’s plans towards the end of MW2, which means we could have the two villains working against each other in MW3.

Gameplay

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3

If anything is clear in the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 vs. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 comparison, it is the difference in their gameplay.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 features a series of improvements from the previous versions. Players warmed up to overhauled vehicle systems and new movement tactics that really changed gameplay. Players can lean out on vehicles and up to the vehicle roofs or even hijack other characters. Their weapons keep repetitiveness at a minimum with branching progressions. The only part MW3 does better than MW2 would be returning slide cancellation and the red dot Call of Duty mini-map.

MW3 makes an exciting attempt with open combat missions but doesn’t overly win it. Its disjointed missions fail to replicate the excitement expected in accomplishing these missions. Modern Warfare 2 has a better shot with new game modes packaged with clear missions of tracking, capturing, and defending a hostage.

Verdict

Modern Warfare 2 vs. Modern Warfare 3

Whether Sledgehammer Games and Infinity Play made improvements in the video game series Modern Warfare reboot isn’t debatable. Both Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 are incredible sequels to COD. However, although the latter did a great job with the characters, visuals, and maps, they are not quite game-changing. The improvements fail to focus on the fans’ epic moments, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beats it on that.
