FPS games have always, and will always, thrive on console. The ease with which we can sit on our couches or in our gaming chairs and instantly get lost in an immersive and action-packed shooter is the focal point that never fails to capture our interest. However, it's the many moments of being in the middle of the action, making highlight-worthy plays, and playing with our friends that keep us gaming for hours on end. So, if you're seeking a new FPS to play this April that will re-spark all those emotions, our selection of five of the greatest FPS Games for PlayStation 5 gamers will undoubtedly deliver – and some even do it for free.

5. Apex Legends

Although battle royales are still kicking around, it's safe to say the genre and many games with it, have had their time in the spotlight. However, one title that made it through the wickets and continues to shine today is Apex Legends. Evidently, that's because Apex Legends never fails to deliver intense firefights and chaotic gameplay, match after match. Moreover, the game being free-to-play may also have something to do with its longevity.

Regardless of the matter, Apex Legends' battle royale revolves around trio-squads. Each player chooses a “Legend,” who possesses a passive, tactical, and ultimate ability. Think of it as their hero abilities. Some Legends and their abilities are designed for healing, defensive play, or being an offensive maniac (Cough Cough, Octane). Overall, it takes a lot of team chemistry to come out on top of the game's never-ending chaotic firefights. And, that's ultimately why Apex Legends remains one of the best FPS games on PlayStation 5, even in April 2023.

4. Enlisted

Enlisted - Gameplay Trailer | E3 2021

If futuristic, hero abilities mixed with FPS action isn't your thing, perhaps your looking for a more authentic experience. Well, you'll find that in Enlisted, a free-to-play WWII-based shooter that puts you in the middle of its most famous battles. However, you're not just any regular foot soldier; you're the platoon commander. And you must train, equip, and confidently lead your squad into battle by commanding one NPC soldier at a time, with the others constantly on the lookout for your flank. If you die, you simply assume the role of another person in your squad until everyone is out for the count.

The war-reenacted matches feature 10 vs 10 lobbies, with each player assuming command of their own platoon. However, this isn't just a tactical foot battle, it's a full-fledged warfare with ground and air infantry constantly bombarding the warzone. So, if you can bare the responsibility, try out your skills at being a squad leader in Enlisted, one of the best WWII Based FPS games on PlayStation 5 in April.

3. Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 Official Gameplay Trailer

Talk about a comeback. It's no secret that EA's latest edition in the Battlefield franchise, Battlefield 2042, performed horribly upon its initial release. While there were many contributing factors for that, you can sum up the whole with that EA released the game before it was functionally stable enough to be played on consumer systems. Safe to say fans of the series weren't too fond of the product they received.

That's why we're even surprised to be saying that Battlefield 2042 is one of the best FPS games for PlayStation 5 in April 2023. And one of the main reasons for that underdog narrative is that EA dedicated a team to constantly updating their latest FPS until it exceeded gamers' expectations – which we can now confidently claim it has.

There are new maps, weapons, gear, gadgets, vehicles, you name it. As a result, Battlefield 2042 is as destructive, chaotic, and as thrilling as it always promised to be. The extreme weather conditions, such as tornadoes, throw a whole curve ball into the exaggerated gameplay that just makes it tirelessly fun to play. Overall, we don't blame you for turning your back on Battlefield 2042 thus far. But, you may regret not giving it a shot in this day and age.

2. Hell Let Loose

Hell Let Loose - Release Date Announcement Trailer | PS5

Although Enlisted is an excellent choice for a WWII-based shooter, to us, it's not the best in its genre on PS5. If you're willing to spend some money, you can enjoy the wonders of Hell Let Loose. The concept is similar to Enlisted in that you fight in the most war-torn battles of WWII. As a meager foot soldier, you must push through enemy lines while keeping an eye out for artillery, tanks, and a swarm of air infantry.

However, the main difference however between Enlisted, is that you're a soldier a part of a real-player squad in Hell Let Loose, and the success of your unit requires you to move as a team. Each of the game's nine renowned WWII battlefields supports 50v50 player matches. And it culminates in some of the most epic and theatric gaming moments imaginable. Seriously, Hell Let Loose is just hand-crafted for providing you with those unforgettable gaming memories. Consequently why we have it a couple of shelves higher than its competitor in this list of the best FPS games for PlayStation 5.

1. Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 Launch Trailer

Maybe it's true that the best FPS games are the free ones. Because taking the cake on our list is Blizzard's epic hero-shooter sequel, Overwatch 2. Though many players were hesitant, everyone can agree that Blizzard outdid itself with the title. Once again, the FPS hero-based MOBA is endlessly entertaining to play, and its sequel did an excellent job of revitalizing that feeling.

For example, the switch to 5v5 matches was something many players doubted but really did succeed in terms of gameplay. On top of that, a cast of new heroes, maps, and game modes have made Overwatch 2 one of the best and most played FPS games by both console and PC gamers since its release back in October of 2022.

So, what's your take? Do you agree with our top five? Are there other FPS games on PlayStation 5 you think are best? Let us know in the comments below or over on our socials here!
