Sony Announces Japan-Only Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black, a new color variation of its Japan-only PS5 console, on October 13, 2026. The model releases in Japan on November 19, 2026, at a suggested retail price of 55,000 yen including tax, with a matching Midnight Black disc drive launching the same day.
Like the Japanese-only Digital Edition already on sale, the new console is restricted to use within Japan. It works only with the system language set to Japanese and with a PlayStation account whose country and region is set to Japan, a restriction reflected in the model’s official “Japanese-only” designation. Pre-orders open on October 20, 2026, at PlayStation retailers and e-commerce sites in Japan.
Sony describes the machine as a good-value model that keeps the basic performance shaping the PS5 experience, including the ultra-high-speed SSD, 3D audio, backward compatibility with PlayStation 4, and the DualSense wireless controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, while customizing some specifications for the Japanese market. It carries model number CFI-2200B02S and ships without a disc drive. Its built-in 825GB SSD stores download versions of PS5 games and supported PS4 games purchased through Japan’s PlayStation Store, though Sony notes that part of the SSD capacity is reserved as the system area. Playing download games requires a PlayStation account and an internet connection, and some PS4 titles are not playable on PS5.
Box contents include the console, one DualSense wireless controller, two feet for horizontal placement, an HDMI cable, a power cord, a USB cable, printed materials, and the pre-installed game ASTRO’s PLAYROOM. The unit uses a black coloring Sony describes as a distinctive, rich shade, designed to coordinate with already-released Midnight Black PS5 peripherals such as the PlayStation Portal remote player. A vertical stand is sold separately.
Full Specifications
Inside the console is a single-chip custom processor pairing an x86-64 AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU, with eight cores and 16 threads, with an AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine rated at 10 TFLOPS, backed by 16GB of GDDR6 memory. Ports and networking cover two USB Type-A connections at SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps, one USB Type-C port at Hi-Speed USB, one USB Type-C port at SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps, an M.2 SSD expansion slot, and a terminal for the optional disc drive, alongside Ethernet, IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.1, and an HDMI output. The console is rated for a 100-volt, 50/60-hertz supply, draws a maximum of 350 watts, measures approximately 358 by 80 by 216 millimeters excluding the largest projection, weighs approximately 2.5 kilograms, and is rated for operation between 5 and 35 degrees Celsius.
Matching Disc Drive and Warranty Campaign
The Disc Drive Midnight Black, model CFI-ZDD1J01, launches on the same November 19, 2026, date at a suggested retail price of 11,980 yen including tax. Attached to the Digital Edition, it allows owners to play packaged disc versions of games, and pairing the drive with the console requires an internet connection. The drive’s box contains the drive itself, a Midnight Black cover, long feet for horizontal placement, and an instruction manual.
The new console is also an eligible model in an ongoing purchase campaign. Customers who buy a qualifying PS5 console during the campaign period, which runs through March 31, 2027, and submit a campaign entry receive a one-year extension of the standard one-year manufacturer warranty, bringing coverage to two years in total.
Sony’s official product page designates the Midnight Black console as limited in quantity. It is the newest entry in a Japan-only Digital Edition line that began with the original model, CFI-2200B01, released on November 21, 2025, at the same 55,000 yen price. A DualSense wireless controller double pack, part number CFIJ-10032, bundling a second controller for local multiplayer, followed on April 24, 2026, at 65,000 yen. The page also notes the console is compatible with separately sold PS5 accessories from the CFI-2000 model group, including the vertical stand, disc drive, and console covers.
The announcement arrives ahead of the PS5’s fifth anniversary on November 12, 2026, five years after the launch of the initial model, and the post lists a run of releases around the date. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, the same day as the console, with GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, and SIE’s God of War Laufey also listed as upcoming, joining MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls and Marvel’s Wolverine, which released earlier in 2026.
The post closes with an official notice: PlayStation games newly released from January 2028 onward will be sold only as download versions through the PlayStation Store and retailers, while disc-version games released before January 2028 will remain usable.
