5 Best Moving Out Games of All Time, Ranked

I think we can all agree that moving homes isn't anything like it is in the movies. In fact, it's the polar opposite, and it actually brings more stress than excitement for the most part. This harsh reality is often reflected in video games, formats that know the exact emotions that correspond with moving out. Though, when it's a playable experience, it does become a little less rage-inducing. Or at least, it does when you're playing offline. Multiplayer, on the other hand, can be a whole other ballgame.

Truth be told, there isn't a great deal of games based on moving about. Well, there isn't that many well-known games based on moving out, anyway. But there are, however, a fair amount of multiplayer hits that involve a few similar mini-games, some of which involve shifting breakable antiques for small change. And so, if that's the sort of thing you're after, then grab a buddy and get packing!

5. Moving Out

Moving Out - Launch Trailer | PS4

Moving Out is the most obvious port of call for those looking to uproot from one virtual plot and find ground in another. It's also the flavor of the year for multiplayer fans, especially with the pandemic giving potential tenants and homeowners a little bit of extra leeway. And, it's also a pretty entertaining number, so long as you're willing to engage in a few cutthroat battles with your co-op partner.

The idea is as straightforward as it gets: load up a truck with a whole lot of boxes and prized possessions. The more you load, and the less you destroy in the process—the higher the score. But, should you leave the home looking like a post-apocalyptic crash site, then you'll find yourself rounding back to the beginning for another shot at making a payday. Conflict is definitely expected with this one, and we're all for it.

4. Unpacking

Unpacking - Launch Trailer - Nintendo Switch

Unpacking is about as much of a puzzle game as it is a home decoration game, which is why it has that little extra oomph. In a nutshell, though, it is a pretty straightforward experience, and one that will leave you more satisfied than ticked off.

As you work your way through a lot deprived of character, you'll have the opportunity to unbox a selection of trinkets and make it your own, using whatever space you can find to help transform it into a home away from home. By snapping items into place and giving each room a booming personality, you'll come to unlock your inner zen, giving you the essential skills to make your future dream home pop come moving day.

3. Tools Up!

Tools Up! | Official Reveal Trailer 2019 | (PC, XBOX, PS4, Nintendo SWITCH)

Tools Up! is less about moving out, and more about maintaining a lived-in property, one that needs a highly-skilled team to keep its axis from collapsing. When the owners are away, it's your job to manage the renovations, meaning teamwork is essential should you be wanting to keep a happy customer or two.

Whether it's painting, shuffling a few pieces of furniture around, or sweeping the bathroom tiles of grit—Tools Up! gives you plenty to do as you work against the clock with a group of like-minded professionals. But should you be on the hunt for a game that lets you do the exact opposite of home renovation, then that can also be achieved in this one. Of course, it all depends on the crew you're rolling with. Either way is fine, to be honest, so long as you have fun while doing it.

2. Rubber Bandits

Rubber Bandits | Announcement Trailer

Rubber Bandits definitely won't have you moving homes, but robbing them of all their riches as you battle it out for the most coin among loot-loving friends. Besides the usual locations, you'll also have to throw down in Santa's workshop for toys, candy canes, and tree decorations. All of this comes to life in a huge online multiplayer bonanza, where players all over the globe mesh together for the crown.

Not only does Rubber Bandits have a heist mode for you and your team to compete in, but a brawl game that rings all the same bells as Super Smash Bros. and the likes. The only real difference is, the former has you playing as elasticated thugs with questionable tastes in possessions. Other than that, it's your run-of-the-mill, albeit slightly bonkers multiplayer party game. What more could you want?

1. Overcooked 2

Overcooked 2! – Gameplay Features Trailer | PS4

Of course, if you are feeling a little bit drowsy after carrying all that extra baggage around, then you can always resort to dicing a few salads down in the kitchen. Granted, it won't be any less stressful, but it will give you a great sense of achievement, so long as you get the orders out on time. No pressure or anything.

Overcooked has idled at the peak of the party games library for years now, and it's unlikely to budge so long as fans bunch together to chew through it. And while its concept is pretty straightforward, it still has plenty of content worth sticking around for—especially when you're backed by a team of unruly sous chefs who can't tell the difference between a pickle and a potato.
