Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember — Everything We Know

Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja, the kings of action games, are back again, this time with a sequel I didn’t expect to see coming, at least not in the near future. Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember will be here before you know it, bringing with it all of the stress of its boss battles. But of course, we want it all. Grander. Tougher. Okay, maybe not too tough.

The trailer is already looking spicy. Definitely some huge steps up in those ember graphics, and possibly taking an already fantastic gameplay system to the next level. We do have specific information from the devs we can rely on, so let’s get into that. Here’s everything we know about Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember so far.

What is Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember?

Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember — Everything We Know

Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember is an upcoming action RPG, focusing on Chinese martial arts. It stages its battles against mighty demons in the Three Kingdoms, with sleek and stylish offense and defense moves. In the game, you are a Phoenix, risen from the ashes, and embarking on an epic quest across a dark fantasy world.

Story

The time setting is the Three Kingdoms era. You enter a dark fantasy world divided into three factions. Amid the chaos rises heroes, each fighting for their own beliefs. You, the player, are a warrior, tasked with traversing war-torn battlefields encroached with demons.

It’s unclear whether the story will pick up from the first game, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Koei Tecmo really outdid itself, landing a player base of over 5 million gamers worldwide. Since Fallen Dynasty took place just before the Three Kingdoms era, it’s likely we’ll be seeing familiar crossovers in lore, possibly characters, and even environments.

One thing’s certain, the demons that taunted you in the first game return. Possibly corrupted by the same mystical Elixir from the first game.

Funny that Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember also mentions an elixir of immortality. It’s a resource that has sparked countless wars in search of it, all leading up to a “raging blaze.” The website also refers to your character as the “phoenix” risen from the ashes, and that these flames you were born from will be the power that fuels your quest through the chaos of the Three Kingdoms.

Gameplay

The gameplay systems also seem to remain similar to Fallen Dynasty. You’ll be mastering Chinese martial arts, weaving in both physical and magical abilities into your battles.

A quick refresher. Fallen Dynasty’s gameplay included lots of weapons. We’re talking dual swords, spears, sabres, glaives, staffs, hammers, etc. They mostly played on the offensive, inflicting considerable damage on enemies. Roughly, they fall into melee, ranged, and throwables. And further, boasting unique combos and moves.

But you also have spells, which feed on five elements: lightning, fire, stone, poison, and ice. Their power grows stronger and more varied the more you play, and fights with enemies would typically follow a rock-paper-scissors mechanic. And your last asset is divine beast mode, molded after Chinese mythology. These are beings you can summon into battle, and drastically take your combat abilities and buffs overboard.

Other gameplay additions are character creation, including selecting accessories. Overall, it’s a fast-paced combat system with deep RPG systems that thrives on precise deflection. Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember’s Steam page uses the word “evolved,” though, to describe the new martial arts system. So, we might very well be acquainting ourselves with some new changes.

Development

Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember — Everything We Know

Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja are the giants behind Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, just as they were in developing the first game, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, and similar action RPG, Nioh, and action-adventure, Ninja Gaiden. Their collaborative effort will once again bring us another dark fantasy, soulslike action RPG, championing historical Chinese fiction and mythology.

I’ve gathered more insight into the game, thanks to updates from Team Ninja’s producer and director. Firstly, you can settle into the fact that the new game will tell a brand new story. You’ll also control a new playable protagonist, although you’ll meet familiar faces. The setting is in the Three Kingdoms, during a time when warlords fought for control. Amid the chaos, a phoenix rises without a name, but it’s clear that he’s a hero, clearing vast battlefields of demons and fearsome enemies.

The updates go on to reveal the mix of offense and defense strategies you’ll use in an evolved Chinese martial arts system. Deflecting returns as a skill, as does Spirit. So much more is in store that the developing team promises to reveal in due time. More announcements and further gameplay details that you can keep a lookout for on the official website, but you can also add Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember to your wishlist in the meantime.

Trailer

I got chills watching the trailer for Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember. You can really feel the tension and danger facing the grotesque demons of the fantasy Three Kingdoms universe. The warlords are a powerful presence in the clouds of smoke and flame. They command respect and reverence for their powerful martial arts and magical powers.
