Squid Game: The Official Video Game — Is It Happening?

Let's acknowledge the elephant in the room for a second. That elephant, of course, being Squid Game, Netflix's Korean global phenomenon that has just tallied over 11,000,000 streaming households since its debut last month. Yeah — that elephant.

Ever since the show rolled out on to the streaming platform a little while back, game developers all over the world have tried to step up and recreate the antics that gravitate towards the survival series. Most, of course, have managed to rebuild the basics, with Red Light, Green Light now being one of the biggest free games on mobile devices all over the world. But that's about it. As for a full-length game that wears the Netflix branding like a diamond-encrusted crown well, that remains to be seen. At least for the time being, anyway.

Having said that, Netflix VP of content in Asia Minyoung Kim did actually speak with The Hollywood Reporter recently, and did go on to mention gaming from a bird's eye view. Of course, you'll have to take that with a major grain of salt, but given how well the show has performed in the global rankings (and not to mention Netflix's growing interest in the gaming realm) — a video game really doesn't really seem like an impossible feat.

Minyoung Kim spoke on the matter…

“We are looking at multiple different areas — from games, consumer products and others — to really figure out what we can bring to our audiences to increase their affinity toward our content and give them more joy, while staying true to the world that our creator has built,” Kim said during the interview. “We’ve been getting an overwhelming but happy volume of requests from the organization — from the consumer product department, from the gaming group, from our other international teams.”

So, there you have it. Not exactly enough to give you false hopes, but an adequate amount to keep the fire still spitting over on the back burner. As for the next steps for the series, who knows? I guess we'll just have to wait and see what cards are revealed over the next few months.

So, what are your thoughts? Too soon for Squid Game to step into our world? Let us know over on our socials here.
