Spyro: A Realm Beyond — Everything We Know
Spyro Reignited Trilogy tested the waters. The conclusion? A new Spyro game is very much needed for the good of society. Whether you’re a newcomer or have been waiting for nearly two decades for a new entry, I’m certain the new game will take you to a beautiful place of purple dragons, magic, and wonder.
No complaints here. Quite the opposite, with my excitement overflowing out of me over the possibilities. Plenty will have changed, that’s for sure. The Unreal Engine 5 will no doubt make all the difference in the graphics, which were already so breathtaking in the original games.
But the biggest issue with the series has been on the technical side, as well as the scarcity of content. Gameplay has also struggled in places, especially platforming on the isometric view. All of that will possibly change as Toys for Bob and Activision complete their finishing touches on Spyro: A Realm Beyond.
What is Spyro: A Realm Beyond?

Spyro: A Realm Beyond is an upcoming new mainline entry in the Spyro series. This is a platforming franchise whose journey began in 1998 with Spyro the Dragon. In all the mainline games, Spyro, a young purple dragon, has been the main character, usually on a heroic quest across the Dragon Realms.
While the classics were spectacular titles with positive critical acclaim, the series took a nose-dive in the later entries, which is likely why the franchise went dormant in 2008. Recently, though, the Spyro Reignited Trilogy remake was released by Toys for Bob. And after its global appeal, it seems the developer is ready to revive the series.
Story
Thus, a brand new adventure awaits. A “bold” one, as Spyro: A Realm Beyond’s Steam page says. Your flight abilities return, exploring a realm full of weird and wondrous creatures. As expected, the new game will be a single-player adventure. At the start, you’ll be stranded in a strange world. And while you’re trying to find a way home, you run into a terrifying villain called Scavs.
Your heroic instincts kick in, setting forth on an epic journey. Along the way, you’ll make new friends. However, your main mission will be to protect the realm from all danger lest your home changes forever.
Gameplay

Spyro’s a dragon. So, flight capabilities definitely come with the package. You’ll soar through the skies, over vibrant areas, and through giant treetops. There are dive abilities, too, that come in handy when descending huge cliffs.
“Boldest evolution yet,” Steam says, referring to your flight abilities. You’ll be flying forward, but also chaining together dives and climbs. You can also make tight turns mid-air, allowing you to freely fly and explore the world your way. Fans and newbies, buckle up, and get ready to fly through the skies, reaching the highest points possible.
Development

After Spyro Reignited Trilogy’s success, Toys for Bob returns with a new original entry in the Spyro franchise called Spyro: A Realm Beyond. They partner with Activision, who own the rights to the franchise. While I’ve only just caught wind of the announcement of the upcoming game via the Xbox Games Showcase, I can confirm that development seems to be moving on swiftly, thanks to a dashing first look at the new world.
It’s evidently brilliant, full of bright colors and charming remodeling of its areas and characters. Spyro even looks older and more mature in a charming way, as does the fantasy world in its 3D visual design. Even though the developer for the new game has changed from the classics, Toys for Bob promises to honor the series’ legacy while still ushering Spyro to a fresh, modern world.
Toys for Bob did an excellent job reviving the first three games in Spyro Reignited Trilogy. So, I’m confident Spyro: A Realm Beyond is in capable hands. Toys for Bob Studio Head, Paul Yan, confirms that they’ve been working on the new game for a few years. He speaks about how the new Spyro design feels “familiar but evolved.” He also teases “new skills,” including an enhanced wingspan to fly to new heights.
Moreover, you can look forward to lots of activities in whimsical spaces, as well as characters to interact with, and treasures to find. Exploration will be a key part of your experience, and the gameplay design aims to encourage you to head out far and wide. Still, the devs are focusing on dragon flight, allowing you to experience the full freedom and fantasy of an actual dragon, all while sustaining the dream-like, joyful world fans have known, meeting quirky allies, and ultimately enjoying a relaxing time.
Trailer
From only gliding to flying without limits, Spyro is so back, bigger and better. In the Spyro: A Realm Beyond cinematic announcement trailer, you see Spyro flying through the skies without any time limits. He can spend as much time as he wants in the air while still low-flying over the familiar, colorful world of the series. It’s my peak moment: seeing how detailed and expansive the world is. This feels like a true action-adventure with 3D spaces you can walk and fly through, and perfectly fitting of the calibre of 3D adventure games of today.
Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

Spyro: A Realm Beyond will be here in Spring 2027. As we draw closer to the launch window, a concrete release date will likely be announced, as well as any editions available for preorder. You can rest easy, though, knowing that the final game will launch on Xbox Game Pass from Day One. That means a launch on Xbox Series X/S platforms, as well as PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
Overall, Spyro: A Realm Beyond seems to be an actual step-up in story and gameplay. Spyro is more mature, and the challenges he’ll go through will likely shape his character. “Emotional depths,” as the devs phrase it. Meanwhile, you have an expanded set of abilities that will help you deal with the new antagonist and become a fearsome hero.
