Pocket Bravery developer Statera Studios is back on the scene with another action-packed fighting game. Shield Strike is an upcoming title that flies close to Pocket Bravery with its striking 2D visuals. But as new games go, Shield Strike carves its niche in the platform fighter direction. So, will it be a blast like the developer's previous titles, or will it possibly raise the bar for platform fighting? It could be too early to tell, but the subtle hints of information revealed point to exciting gameplay. So let's unpack what is to come in Shield Strike—everything we know.

What is Shield Strike?

Arwen and Meridia Shield Strike

Shield Strike is an upcoming 2D platform fighter set against a medieval fantasy backdrop. From a roster of eight characters, you get to determine the fate of each while battling a terrifying beast. The neat catch is that there are no guns or blades. You get to use shields instead. Ideally, it's all in the name. The developers couldn't be any more obvious about this.

The competitive game allows up to four players to battle in various modes. It features unique hand-drawn pixel art, and the developers posted a video on X on the creation process.

Story

Details about the upcoming title's story are still in the works. However, we know that each of the eight characters will have a unique narrative. This strategy draws parallels to Pocket Bravery, in which the plot revolves around a group of individuals. However, it did have an overarching story that sheds more light on the characters. Presumably, Shield Strike will take a similar direction, as more will be unveiled before the game launches.

Here's more about the game from its Steam page:

Embark on an epic journey in this combat platformer, immersed in a medieval fantasy setting where the fates of eight brave warriors are intertwined in the fight against a terrifying hellish beast. Armed with godlike shields and relentless determination, these heroes are ready to face epic challenges and fulfill their darkest desires.

Gameplay

Shield Strike blends combat and adventure in a visually stunning pixel-art setting. You take on the role of different warriors in 10 arenas, each hosting three challenging battlegrounds. Each warrior possesses unique abilities that will be revealed as time passes. However, based on the developer's game experience, we can expect Elemental abilities, Super special attacks, and Final attacks. In fact, the game's trailer hints at Final attacks, with the video ending in a likely fatal attack.

Your shield is your defense. You can launch deadly melee attacks or protect yourself from incoming attacks. You may also preserve your HP by dodging attacks as you secure your way to victory. Your fate is to defeat 40 distinct enemies and five terrifying bosses, some of which are almost five times your avatar's size. Moreover, the upcoming title will feature multiplayer, story mode, and co-op play.

Picture this: you're in a handcrafted pixel art universe where adventure and combat collide in a game called Shield Strike. You've got 10 action-packed stages to explore, each with three challenging arenas. And if that's not enough, you'll face over 40 unique enemies and take on five imposing bosses. Talk about a test of skill. But wait, there's more. You get to choose from eight playable characters, each with their own set of abilities. Master the art of shield throwing, defend yourself like a pro, unleash devastating melee attacks, and dodge enemy blows like a boss.

It's all about strategy and skill in this game. And for those who love a bit of competition, Shield Strike has got you covered with co-op and versus modes for up to four players. Whether you're a casual gamer looking for some fun or an avid competitor seeking a challenge, there's something for everyone. So, what are you waiting for? Join the battle, unite with the warriors, and fight for survival in this thrilling combat platformer.

Development

Shield Strike is being developed by Statera Studio and publisher PixelHeart. The developers are a remote studio founded in 2020 to offer gamers a refreshing experience using various mechanics. The studio has two main titles: Pocket Bravery and Guns and Runs, which both embrace retro aesthetics.

Shield Strike is an ode to the studio's tried-and-tested formula, where it sticks to different characters with unique storylines.

On the other hand, PixelHeart is a renowned game publisher that focuses on retro-style games. The studio offers gamers nostalgic experiences reminiscent of classic arcades and consoles. PixelHeart focuses more on indie titles with pixel art and traditional gameplay mechanics.

Some of PixelHeart's notable games include Demons of Asteborg, a vibrant, pixel-art-filled action RPG that pays homage to 16-bit adventure games. Through these releases, PixelHeart has established itself as a champion of retro-inspired gaming by celebrating the charm and challenge found in old-time titles.

The Shield Strike trailer reveals the intense, action-packed adventure that awaits gamers once it is released. In a 56-second video, Statera Studios shows the upcoming title's gameplay, with two sides fiercely battling each other. Everything unravels in fast-paced action, and the ingenious platform mechanics complement the medieval fantasy setting.

At a quick glance, the trailer resembles Brawhalla. Besides the retro visuals, Shield Strike appears to embody the fighting mechanics that Super Smash Bros. and Brawhalla fans enjoy.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Shield Strike is planned to launch in 2025, but the developers have not provided a concrete date. As of now, we can confirm that the upcoming game will be available on PC platforms via Steam and on Wishlist.

Additionally, we don't have information on the editions to expect. If previous games by the studio are anything to go by, we might not have any special editions. However, this might change after the game launches.
