Scorn: 5 Things You Should Know

Published

 on

Scorn is an upcoming first-person survival horror game that blends flesh, bone, and machinery with an opaque and deeply disturbing atmospheric world. This very world, which happens to stem from the minds of Polish painter Zdzisław Beksiński and Swiss artist H.R. Giger — the creative waterfall behind Ridley Scott's Alien — will send you on a journey across hellish landscapes shrouded in mystery and gothic folklore.

Since its initial announcement back in 2014, Scorn has undergone numerous transition periods and development issues, with its developer even igniting a feud with CD Projekt Red over on Kickstarter. The studio has, of course, since apologized, and has gone on to full throttle the biopunk chapter for an ambitious 2022 release. But what else do you need to know about the upcoming horror? Well, here are five things you should understand about Scorn.

5. What Is Scorn?

Scorn Gameplay Trailer

Scorn will plant you in the center of a machine-like dream world, in which an unnamed protagonist must traverse its interconnected regions in a non-linear fashion. Each region, which will bring its own lore and thread of mysteries, will present the wanderer with the chance to delve deep into a creepy setting that bleeds complexity and atmosphere. Along the way, the silent explorer must tackle hazardous terrains, and go toe-to-claw with its surviving inhabitants.

Ebb Software, the developer behind Scorn, has made it abundantly clear that the campaign will prioritize deep exploration and puzzle solving over combat. That said, as this is a survival horror entry, players can definitely expect their fair share of cutthroat encounters. With both demonic foes and machine-like nightmares roaming the boney metropolis, there'll more than likely be a few heavy-handed bosses, too. But at its heart, Scorn is an exploration game, and its main purpose is to make you feel like you're “being thrown into the world” — isolated, and without guidance.

4. “It Is Not a Shooter”

Just to echo the fact that Scorn, as much of a survival horror game as it appears to be, is not a shoot 'em up. It does, however, feature a multitude of weapons, including a three-barrel rifle that ejects spikes, and a six-shot pistol, which speaks for itself. According to Ebb Software, these are just two of the weapons that players will be able to unlock and experiment with when out exploring the nooks and crannies of the nightmarish world.

So, if it isn't a shooter, then what is it? Well, that's the thing. It's more of a puzzle game, with a harsher focus on unwritten rules and a thought-provoking narrative. There is no dialogue, either — only inscriptions and symbols, a lot of which players will have to discover in order to weave their own conclusions. And so, be mindful that Scorn will be an awfully quiet journey, and the fact that it also doesn't contain cutscenes will, of course, make that feeling of being alone and starved of companionship hit twice as hard.

3. Escape the Nightmare

As this is an exploration title, it comes as no surprise that the aim of the game, besides having to unearth a wide array of secrets, is to have a destination to work towards. And while it hasn't been confirmed by Ebb Software just yet, it appears as though the primary objective of Scorn will be to escape the nightmarish world that you're plunged into. How this is done, of course, is entirely up to you — hence the non-linear approach.

While the goal may not be in black and white, Ebb Software has done a pretty tidy job at coining Scorn as a story that speaks volumes for itself, without the use of unnecessary theatrics and effects. With that, you can expect to aimlessly roam about picking up artefacts, all the while some story may or may not come to fruition in the background. As for what that story turns out to be and how it'll draw to a close is, at this moment in time, anybody's guess.

2. System Requirements

So, can your hardware play Scorn? Well, chances are, it probably can. In spite of the biopunk world boasting some pretty advanced technical aspects, Ebb Software has indeed set the bar at a fair level, meaning you can just about experience all there is to see and do without breaking the bank.
