Night Rolls Cozy Store takes me back to the golden age of Blockbuster—to the harmonious evenings in which entire neighborhoods would flock to catch the midnight release of a cinematic masterpiece, or to bag copious amounts of popcorn, licorice and soda right before the store would close. A local sushi store, as it turns out, isn’t all that different. The energetic, albeit somewhat floppy gestures, fill the room nicely, as do the questionable decorations, the hyperactive guests and the warm acoustics that make a dimly lit konbini oh-so-inviting. It’s a place that you want to visit, and a spot that, even past the midnight hour, has that kind of charm that makes you want to stick around awhile to sample the flavors.

Having recently mellowed out to inKONBINI, I can honestly say that convenience stores do have a certain charm to them. Sleep deprivation often gets the better of us, and, as we often frequent a store past midnight, we forget to acknowledge the beauty in their simple pleasures—the intimate touches and the welcoming atmosphere that radiates through the walls of an otherwise quaint and peaceful store. Night Rolls Cozy Store looks to build on that twilight experience, with a hassle-free à la carte of sushi, subtlety, and a soothing atmosphere that makes you smile from ear to ear as you gather your groceries and prepare your sushi.

Night Rolls Cozy Store doesn’t do much to rewrite the rulebook or give the existing store-based chore sim a well-needed facelift. Instead, it chooses to keep to the same basic set of principles, and to add its own brand of quirkiness to the equation. The job, while not as quiet or as relaxing as it should be during the witching hour, is easy enough to wade through, and the process of elevating a cozy convenience store on the far end of town is an absolute delight in itself, despite being somewhat light on gameplay.

If you’re not preparing sushi rolls in the back room for your customers to waffle down in Night Rolls, then you’re stocking shelves with groceries, ordering items for your store, or browsing an in-game social media forum to brush up on all of the latest developments in your palm-sized world. There isn’t much of a point to any of this I’ll admit — but that’s a cozy shopkeeping sim for you, in a nutshell. It gives you a routine, a dose of progression-locked items, and an open canvas to interpret and gradually fill out over several in-game shifts. You clock in at eleven, and do all in your power to make good progress before dawn. The clock resets, and then you do it all over again.

The gameplay itself is easy to understand, given that it largely consists of patrolling the store, serving various customers from all walks of life, and making small but significant improvements to the store’s interior. You can meet eccentric characters, build a reputation, and slowly but steadily grow your brand. With no timers or hidden curveballs to fret about, the floor is yours for the taking, either to openly manipulate or explore at your own pace. And that’s essentially what Night Rolls Cozy Store is: a cozy business simulation game that favors life in the slow lane and expels the usual foot traffic and added busywork.

For a game that proudly orbits a familiar blueprint, Night Rolls Cozy Store certainly crams a lot into its world. From the humorous radio DJ commentaries to the relatable forums, the original character apparel to the bite-sized mini-games — true to its word, it packs quite a weighty punch—a soft, elastic punch, at that. Again, it’s a pretty easy game to slip into and learn right off the bat. But then, that’s partly what makes it so darn appealing. It knows what it is, and it knows which components to utilize to keep you busy.

Of course, Night Rolls does give you a few things to consider aside from the sushi cabinet. For example, you have bills to pay, in-store expenses to cover, and trends to juggle. As you earn a wage, you unlock more benefits that further propel your own interests, such as decorations, clothing, and higher quality groceries. On paper, it sounds like a lot to maintain all at once. The fact of the matter, however, is that it is all rather straightforward. As the clock strikes eleven, you open your store, switch on the radio, and serve a steady flow of customers, all whilst working towards that dream of having enough money to purchase the store.

Night Rolls feels like a complete game — and that in itself is a huge accomplishment. Unlike your typical cash grab that relies on AI-fueled facets and wooden animations, forgettable characters and dull graphics, Night Rolls Cozy Store pours a lot of heart and soul into its presentation. With some clean, albeit comical visuals, fluid movement, coherent radio dialogue, and intuitive sandbox mechanics, it establishes itself as a genuine passion project and not, for example, a quick and shameless ten-second indie. And that goes a long, long way here.

As simple and as familiar as Night Rolls may seem to the die-hard shop assistant, it is an absolute pleasure to work through. Although it might not reinvent the wheel as far as modern-day shopkeeping simulators go, it does formulate its own identity and flaunt its own self-contained ecosystem. For that reason alone, I’d say that it’s more than worth checking out the next time you’re looking to scratch that post-inKONBINI itch.

Verdict

Night Rolls Cozy Store might not underscore the frills of a modern-day masterpiece, but it does take pride in its own self-contained world, with a famously simple gameplay style, a host of drag-and-drop mini-games, and a quaint atmosphere that you can’t help but fall in love with for brief periods of time. While it might not do anything particularly exciting with its sushi rolls, it does provide a thoroughly enjoyable pre-dinner snack that can easily satisfy your needs for a cozy business simulation game.
