INK ENIGMA 2 Review (Xbox Series X|S)

INK ENIGMA is back with yet another pot of hand-drawn, “silky-smooth” black-and-white illustrations for its faithfully crafted hidden object series, with forty brand-new sketches, smoother scrubbing tools, and a fresh coating of paint to elevate its original design and its hour-long episodic inky excursion. Like before, it builds its backbone on a collection of crisp, sketchbook-like drawings, simple-to-navigate magnifying techniques, and a short but engaging panel-hopping experience that blends homely comforts with elementary details. In this instance, however, there are more chapters, more focal points, and more opportunities for you to wrack your brain over the smallest of details.

Like most hidden object games that have come before it, INK ENIGMA 2 happily leans into a commonly known yet universally beloved formula of scattered set pieces, hand-drawn dioramas, and carefully curated checklists. Without needing to tamper with the existing recipe or spruce it up with unnecessary padding, it holds onto its crutch in an attempt to resonate with the target demographic, with the bare necessities of a familiar puzzle game and a comforting aesthetic that looks inviting and comes across as friendly enough to keep you company whilst you sift through its panels for an hour or two.

INK ENIGMA, for those of you who’ve yet to tap their knuckles on the lid of the original, is a beginner-friendly hidden object game in which your sole purpose is to carefully inspect and unmask various objects of all shapes and size across a myriad of locations. As its title openly implies, each “panel” that you tackle has its own inky texture, pencil-pasted subjects, and hand-drawn checklists. But of course, the idea is a simple one: to give eagle-eyed observers the chance to dabble their magnifying glass over a tapestry of sketches and gradually eliminate a wide variety of hidden items. Like a traditional hidden object game, then, only a little, well, inkier.

To say that the sequel to the original is bursting at the seams with fresh ideas and never-before-seen features would be a lie. Respectfully speaking, it isn’t a major improvement over the original sequence, but rather, a beefier version that harbors a few tighter screws and flashier components. The campaign, for example, adopts over forty new stages, each of which bring more line work, more details, and more complex scenery to the chalkboard. But, other than that, INK ENIGMA 2 is still in possession of a lot of the same basic inkblots.

As the saying goes, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ Naturally, INK ENIGMA knows this golden rule all too well, as does it know that, if you can bottle lightning once, then you shouldn’t risk letting it go to find a second bolt, but retain it in the hopes that it will still hold its weight and its value later down the line. The sequel, really, is that same bottle of lightning. It’s just a little more saturated and steeped in technical overhauls. The heart of it, however, remains perfectly intact and fit for purpose.

As far as entry-level hidden object games go, INK ENIGMA 2 is definitely one of the more enjoyable adventures of its kind. While rather short (two hours, at a push), it does make a genuine effort to fill its gaps with a lot of great content, with some clean images, relatable yet static events, and an intuitive interface that allows even the blindest of spectators to pluck out the tiniest of hidden gems from the strangest of places. With that, it finds itself atop a familiar podium of family-oriented puzzle games, not as a kingmaker, but as a worthy torchbearer for the field.

Given that the mechanics are intentionally condensed to accommodate a younger audience, INK ENGIMA is an incredibly easy game to burn through. As there aren’t any major roadblocks or thought-provoking puzzles to tackle, you could, in theory, blitz through the entire “campaign” in a single sitting without needing to leave the comfort of your own front room. But that’s essentially what a hidden object game is at its core: a one-and-done puzzle that doesn’t necessarily change the world, but simply compliments it with its own minimalistic charm and intuitive suite. INK ENGIMA understands this role, and honestly, it embraces it with open arms.

Fitted with its signature aesthetic and crisp audio cues that elegantly pop as you scratch off each object from the list, INK ENIGMA 2 stands out as a wholesomely inviting and satisfying place to call home. Although it doesn’t stick around all that long, what with its short two-hour (and that’s if you choose to tiptoe through the motions than bolt through them at a rapid pace) campaign, it does bungle a lot of things onto its canvas to help extend its lifespan.

All in all there’s an adorable, beautifully crafted search-and-find puzzle game here that ticks all of the usual boxes. To that end I’d say that, if you do enjoy sketchpad puzzlers, or better yet, AVGAM’s style of storytelling, then you should definitely take a chance on INK ENIGMA 2. It’s unapologetically simple, yet as equally engaging as it is universally wholesome. There isn’t a lot more that you truly need from a hidden object game, really.

INK ENIGMA 2: Hidden Object Challenges makes a commendable effort to enhance its original blueprint with a fresh lick of paint, a loftier campaign of sketch-based panels, and a smoother gameplay experience that improves even the smallest scrubbing tool to ensure that each piece of its jigsaw puzzle is a genuine delight to carve through from the comfort of a front room. With its signature aesthetic and faithful audio cues in hand, it achieves (and even surpasses) its in-house standard with flying colors. More to the point, it makes for a brilliantly balanced, beginner-friendly game.

If you’re looking for an easy way to unwind after a long day, then you ought to consider blotting your pen on INK ENIGMA’s canvas. It might not keep you as its guest for that long, but it will give you plenty to write home about with the quills, inks and sketches it holds dear.
