Minecraft Dungeons II — Everything We Know

Does Minecraft Dungeons II’s move from linear, mission-based levels to an open-world design come as a surprise? Not in the slightest. This, among many more changes, like online matchmaking, new gameplay additions, like a jumping ability, a soul meter, better navigation, and inventory management, all presumably usher the spin-off series to a new era. 

This isn’t Diablo IV, not by a mile. But with the new changes, I’m curious whether the spin-off series will be more addictive, heading back to the dungeons for more precious loot and perfecting your build after every run. For now, the devs have given us insight into everything you can expect from Minecraft Dungeons II.

What is Minecraft Dungeons II?

Minecraft Dungeons is a spin-off series of the powerhouse Minecraft franchise. It ditches building and crafting for a more combat-focused gameplay loop. The upcoming Minecraft Dungeons II will follow the path of its predecessor, treating you to an action-adventure crawling through dungeons set in the Minecraft universe. 

You explore randomly generated dungeons for treasure and valuable collectibles. However, you have to get past challenging enemies and bosses, using hack-and-slash combat to take them down. 

In the sequel, you’ll embark on a new adventure. New areas you haven’t seen before, and mysterious spots for exploration await you. Like in the first game, you’ll be building up to the standoff against a new antagonist. 

Story

It’s pretty great that your multiple runs through Minecraft-themed dungeons have a purpose. It’s all to stop a new evil that’s causing chaos and plans to destroy the world. More rightly, you’ll explore two worlds, as the Steam page suggests the new sequel will take you to. I suspect it’ll be the Twisted Warden shown in the trailer, which is a bigger and more terrifying version of the Warden foes. Before facing the final boss, you’ll fight the iconic mobs of the Minecraft universe. You’ll fight everything from skeletons to spiders, and even some ghost enemies shown in the trailer. They’re the line of defense against reaching the final boss and saving the day. 

Gameplay

No class selection here. Instead, you’ll need to collect and customize weapons, armor, talismans, spells, active and passive abilities, and more gear types, for the playstyle you prefer. Minecraft Dungeons II promises deeper customization options with more melee and ranged weapons and items to experiment with. 

Otherwise, your playtime will be spent exploring new lands and mysterious locations. Multiplayer returns, allowing you to team up with up to three friends in couch or online co-op and conquer the dungeons together. A point the devs want you to note is that the combat will be more challenging than ever, brought on by new, mysterious events and strange encounters across the Overworld.

What’s New?

Minecraft Dungeons II will be very much like the first game, only better. And that’s largely thanks to the new changes the developers have promised. The biggest change of all is the shift to open-world design. Previously, you played through linearly-structured levels, having to select missions first before diving into a dungeon. Now, you’ll experience a more seamless and interconnected exploration journey that’s more fitting of the Minecraft vibe.

You can now jump, too, which may sound like a small change. Factor a new jumping ability into your combat system, though, and the possibilities for attacking and defending yourself are more exciting. Or, more practically, during exploration, when you can reach higher platforms.

The graphics will also be much better than before. They’ll be more polished, which you can already see from the trailer. It looks like peak animation I’d absolutely love to see on the big screen. You’ll experience moodier surroundings, thanks to the lighting. Out in the sun, it’s bright and warm. But in the caves, you feel an eerie presence. But even the sound is more intentional, with rising tension during fights. From the texture to the vibrance, Minecraft Dungeons II looks and sounds much better. 

Development

Mojang Studios and Double Eleven are the developers working on Minecraft Dungeons II, while Xbox Game Studios will handle publishing. For a minute there, it seemed like we wouldn’t be getting a sequel. But with the reveal trailers and announcement at the Xbox Game Showcase, I’m happy the devs gave it the go-ahead. 

The idea is to launch a sequel that builds on the first game, which I found to be more fun to play with friends. It’s the kind of game you can recommend to anyone, even gamers who aren’t particularly fond of dungeon-crawlers, thanks to its approachable gameplay. While the sequel adds new content and gameplay that give it more depth, it still seems to remain accessible to every gamer.

The addition of online matchmaking is a definite step in the right direction. At least then, you can find your people, whether you want a chill playthrough or a more intense one, grinding through the dungeons. 

Trailer

At first, we got the announcement trailer for Minecraft Dungeons II. When the excitement over a new sequel had finally settled in, we got a reveal trailer, which is absolute cinema. The characters look so much more lively, like you can feel their emotions and determination to defeat the Twisted Warden. There’s so much drama, supported by a more vibrant and breathtaking world. And those ghosts possessing the mobs have me worked up enough to look forward to taking them down.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

Minecraft Dungeons II will launch on September 29, 2026. Not too long now for those who’ve already pre-ordered the Standard Edition at $29.99 or the Deluxe Edition at $49.99. Why pre-order when you can’t just wait for the launch? Well, you’ll get pre-order bonuses, which include the Twisted cape and Twisted chicken pet hero skins. As for the Deluxe Edition, it carries more benefits, including the Soul cape, Blub pet, four hero skins, and two DLC packages.

You can play Minecraft Dungeons II on all current-gen platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. And for those with Xbox Game Pass, you can access the game from Day One of launch.
